Rick's Origin Season 5 vs Season 3 

Do you think the real reason Rick hates time travel is because at some point he tried it to prevent this, but never succeeded because of how time travel really works?

Main difference between the two is that in season 3 is that rick made it right on the spot. while in season 5, it took him some time of living alone and being depressed about the loss of his family to create the portal gun. Edit: really love the people in this comment section who gives other differences that i never noticed.

It’s interesting how the Rick we knew never even had an original morty, the morty we know is just the child of a different Beth Rick found throughout the multiverse.

I noticed that in the real memory, in season 5, he is not only hearing it passively and smiling like in the fake memory. He seems to be arguing with the other Rick.

That's why Rick could abandon Beth in the Chronenberg Universe. His Beth died decades or even centuries ago. He's just playing pretend. I wonder how long he searched to try and find a reality where Dianne was still alive. Or maybe he couldn't bear to face her again.

Rick didn’t actually fabricate his family dying, he just fabricated him making the formula instantly after. This show has given us this information so far in the past but then made us think it was ALL fake. Kinda brilliant actually.

I love that this implies that Rick has been going to all the Beths who have been abandoned by their Ricks when we were led to believe Rick abandoned his Beth. Rick has a HEART!

What’s interesting is that in both versions we don’t see who dropped the bomb. It simply fell from the portal. Anyone could have dropped it.

Man, this makes you feel awful for every time that Rick gets berated for "Abandoning Beth"

The thing that people misunderstand is that the detective wanted to know how Rick created the portal gun. We were interested in learning about how his family died. So when he said that he made it all up he wasn’t talking about his family. Just the part where he created the portal gun right after.

I wonder where this Rick who killed Beth and his wife is. He tried so hard to find him and kill him, and even him, didnt manage to acomplish it, even after killing thousents of other Ricks in the process.

A Rick killing Beth and his wife seems out of character. Rick's don't even kill other Jerry's. What if someone else did this with the desire to frame Rick knowing what would happen as a result? Just a thought.

I don't know if this was the general consensus, but this entire time I thought he made up the entire thing in S3. I thought it was just the writers being over-dramatic and laughing in our face when the facades fell down. Seeing now that it was all true, with the invention of the portal gun being exaggerated, makes it so much more impactful.

My favorite bit is we went 2 seasons thinking this was all a lie, but it was basically the truth all along. Pretty subversive tbh. Probably one of the more creative decisions for this ep

Gotta love the detail of Young C-137 Rick's hair and skin being slightly lighter than the more jaded Rick... it's a subtle nod to how bright Young Rick was, before he became corrupted and jaded It reminds me of how he got a similar lightening of colour when he became Healthy Rick and had his toxins purged, which then darkened back to his usual shades when he re-merged with Toxin Rick

I have a feeling Rick that killed our Rick's Wife and Daughter is going to be the main Villain of the show.

The reason why this event hits Rick so hard is he’s the only Rick, the rickest Rick, that thinks that you can’t just switch universes and gain exactly what you had. That’s why he doesn’t switch universes to get a new best friend (bird person) and why he doesn’t just switch universes to get a new wife. The best he can do is go find one where his daughter is. The whole idea is basically the ship of Theseus.

I just realized our Rick would've never even been considered to exist in the finite curve and would've lived his life as a simple Rick if his Beth and Wife didn't die.

The one thing im confused about with this is if Rick traveled to a dimension where Beth was alive, wouldn't Diane be alive by extension then too? Where's Diane?

Theres a possibility that the context of the “fabricated” version of Rick’s backstory shown in season 3 paints a much brighter light on his relationship with his wife and daughter than how it actually was in reality. What we see through Morty’s eyes is audio-less and cut short so our only context given to us is visual. We don’t see the moments of Diane and Rick having a happy and healthy relationship thats shown to us in the fabricated version, its highly possible those scenes never even happened. Rick did mention that he was apart of a failing marriage at some point in the series, like many other Rick’s probably experienced as well in their pursuit of creating the portal gun, their marriages were going to go down hill too. C-137 Rick’s relationship with his wife may have been rocky but after that meeting with his other self, he probably didn’t like how many versions of himself were quick to abandon Beth and Diane, so he may have tried to turn a new leaf with his family but that chance was quickly snuffed away from him as soon as that Rick returned to murder them.

Back during that flashback episode. I thought Rick's reactions were him mentally focusing in order to create a virus to affect the space government. Now I realized it's possibly a mix of both actual trauma and him thinking hard to make that computer virus

If mcdonalds didn't discontinue the suace, we wouldn't have this backstory. Butterfly effect

The main thing I’m wondering is this: why did that other Rick want to kill Rick’s family? Was it out of pettiness for his refusal? Or did he have plans that would only work out if that Rick became what he became? What if that plan didn’t fail? What if it’s still in motion?

I love how Rick is constantly becoming more empathetic and we see more of his actual bottled up emotions: take the last episodes for example, they showed us that: he loves bird person, he is actually driven by his family’s death, he can become empathetic, mr. nimbus knows about Diane dying… so he must have talked about his feelings with mr.nimbus and I could go on and on. That’s one of the best things about this show imo, because in the first episodes and seasons we are driven to believe that he doesn’t care about anyone and anything… well, now we know he does😔

I feel like Rick story is going to become even darker when we find out in his attempt to revive Diana he killed her infinity.

Damn I just realized how devastating it must of been for Rick to have to relive his wife and daughters death again in season 3

Something tells me that this "evilier" Rick will return in season 6... Either only once or as a more recurring antagonist...

Rick really just wanted to live the Simple Rick life style.

I knew that his backstory wasn’t completely fake, the emotions he was going through, especially falling to his knees couldn’t be faked… not even by Rick.

The music for the history montage was gloriously perfect, especially considering how long everyone's waited for it.

a huge diffence I noticed is that season 5 rick was more angry and distant with evil rick, looking away, having an angry face, hand folded, than in season 3 where he passed the idea of the portal gun more politely, so there is still more we dont know about the conversation season 5 rick had with evil rick and what was really being discussed also evil rick was surprised by what rick answer in the season 5 verision, instead of being angry like in season 3

You can tell when rick gets on his knees that this is canon

I think what makes C-137 Rick the ultimate Rick is because he’s a rock that actually cares for his family Jerry included

Hopefully we get to see Rick avenge his actual family in the next season, but if it doesn't happen then I'm all good with that

So in Rick's backstory, was he a self-employed inventor? Did he have a succesful career since he had that nice suburban house and was able to support Dianne and Beth and he wasn't worried financially about discontinuing his work in portal tech, it was more of a side hustle. Since he's the smartest man in the Universe, I would assume before he invented portal tech he had produced and sold a number of patents from his garage workshop which gave his family a comfortable middle class lifestyle. We know Rick is capable of acquiring unbelievable wealth and power from across the Universe, he doesn't live like a King on Earth only because he views that as lowly and boring compared to interstellar adventures. It's so sad that he lost his Family, because he could have become like a Steve Jobs on Earth, but been grounded enough to value those around him.

People have pointed this out as a part of the theory that C-137 knew Prime before he killed his family but if you pause the beginning of of the Season 5 flashback, Rick doesn't look confused or surprised to see Prime like he is in the Season 3 backstory. He looks annoyed/bored, like he's already meet Prime and seen the portal gun before.

How are we so sure that Rick was the one that killed them? For all we know, how crazy this series is, I wouldn’t be surprised if time travel is at play here and it was OUR Rick that did this. To create himself. Because think about it. What would the multiverse be without Rick?

Well, what we know now is that Rick’s actual daughter is in fact dead, and he found another version of her whose life he manipulates to creating Morty.

Season 5 finale is just idk what words to use I'm just quite excited for season 6.

I feel like the Rick that kills Diane and Beth is the Original Rick, setting every other Rick on a path he deems right. It would only make sense the original Rick would be able to cause an incident so bad it drives a Rick to become the “Rickest Rick”, becoming more Rick than the Original Rick. There’s been a good handful of moments that eluded to this, Rick for instance says “It would go without saying for the Rickest Rick to have the Mortiest Morty”, and the council of Ricks calling C-137 the Rickest Rick, despite being “137”.

It’s sad to think, all those times Beth criticizes C-137 for abandoning her and her mother, she was actually saying that to the Rick that watched his original wife and daughter die and spent half of his entire life trying to get his family back, not the one who really left them, and throughout all 5 seasons, Rick never reveals this truth to her to show her his true care for Beth(s).

I feel like rick and Morty would do some plot twist into making the dumb rick aka Jerry's friend into the killer rick

A good ending for this show is that rick finally invented a time machine that can turned back time effectively so he can kill the dude who was about to kill his family, and after killing him and destroying the portal gun, the existence of the portal gun and other ricks will be gone forever (cuz without the portal gun, ricks and the idea of portal gun will disappear, it's the roots of all of the existence of other ricks) and he will be able to live with his family again forever and invent stuff except the portal gun

Don't forget what bird person said, he pointed out that Rick went to an abandoned family It's somewhat nice to see him suffering though because it proves he has a heart

in season 3 I thought that this wasn't real but when I think of it now it makes me sad. Rick was a really nice guy but Rick made him suffer. Rick is an asshole!

I always thought Rick was supposed to have grey hair, but apparently it's some kind of mutation that gave him naturally pale blue hair? (We've seen his body hair, and it's the same color, too).

Okay, maybe I've been sleepwalking through the series but I failed to pick up on which Rick it was who killed Rick's wife and daughter. Gonna have to rewatch the final two eps a couple of times to look for that.

In season 3 they wanted to know the origin of the portal gun, not ricks origin. Rick fabricated the origin of the portal gun because in season 3 he built if immediately after the explosion but in season 5 it took him days. He fabricated the portal gun’s backstory not his own.

I’m calling it now it’s the “I’m my own creator” flip.

When Rick split into the two versions of himself the toxic version was the one containing his emotional attachments. We know that the toxic parts that were removed were based off of his own perceptions of toxicity or traits they posses that they don't like. Maybe the reason Rick views his attachments as a negative thing is because they're what eventually led to the death of his original Beth and Diane.

An interesting thing to note. As part of their multiverse shenanigans, it's entirely possible for there to be a version of Rick to experience the first version of events. As is there a possibility of more Evil Morty's and Citadels of Rick. There could be an infinite Asimov's cascade of Ricks killing other Ricks and those Ricks killing Ricks as revenge leading to the Citadel and an Evil Morty. Even within the CFC there's a possibility of infinity. The reasoning being a little quirk of maths that there is no one kind of infinity and you can have larger and smaller infinities. The CFC despite it's name stating finite in the title is still a lesser infinity that simply is finite when compared to the much larger, theoretically, infinity of every part of the multiverse outside the CFC. Sooo, more Evil Mortys is possible as is more C-137 type Ricks. The Kronenburg Rick and Morty could have a Kronenburg Citadel and a Kronenburg Evil Morty.

Anyone notice how Rick's house looks like Walt's house in Breaking Bad? I wonder if the official story Rick told the paramedics was that one of his experiments malfunctioned and caused the explosion. It would work for Rick because he viewed what happened overall as his fault anyway and he wanted to punish himself for Dianne and Beth's deaths.

later in the season 3 episode it turns out it was a completely fictitious origin story though.. it went "you can't alter details of memories" "yes, but you can alter a completely fictitious origin story" or similar

I find it amazing how rick said that was an entirely fabricated origin story in season 3 however the only thing that was a lie was how he made the portal gun then and there.

He said it was a fake memory in the Season 3 episode, but it shows here that the part he made up was creating the portal equation immediately after the incident whereas in reality, time passed before he started going to other universes.
