@@martinbacik2724 What he is saying is that a conflict of interest inherent in religious peoples prevents them from viewing all religions equally. Atheism is not a religion it is a lack of religion therefore he can say that he views all religions equally because he doesn’t have that conflict of interest as an outsider. All that said, I still don't believe he views all religions equally. I as an atheist am biased against evangelical Christians because they tend to be some of the most outspoken Bible pushers I've interacted with, and their views on the end of the world are dangerous and have hurt a lot of people.
Brainwashing through religion, waging wars through religion, shaming people through religion, manipulating people through religion. It's just awful. I think all religions are awful exactly because they enable those things. The problem is that even if religions didn't exist, people would still find other ways, such as politics. In fact, they already do because the world is becoming less religious.
@Ben Evans You clearly have no idea how that stuff works since you spout such idiocy. People are allowed to believe whatever they want, yes, but that doesn't mean people won't use those beliefs maliciously. I suggest you read a bit about indoctrination and brainwashing. It's interesting, and you might be able to find that such methods are used extremely commonly just about everywhere. Politics, advertising, religion, various communities, everywhere. It's unavoidable and inevitable, but if you know of it, you can better protect yourself.
@Ben Evans I feel like people don't think about what could be the truth. They don't even entertain the idea of God not existing. They don't think, they just follow. And I do believe that faith can be used to make soldiers.

Totally. I’m Christian, and I don’t see the point in treating others poorly just because they have different beliefs or lifestyles than me. Just like another person in the replies said, treat other people good, and chances are you’ll be treated good back.
He stole the words out of my mouth. I treat people the way I would want to be treated. I don't need a higher power or book written 5 thousand years ago by a bunch of dudes to have good morals. I love you all my theist and atheist humans
And from the other spectrum of beliefs, I say that I love you, as well. Thank you for being the type of human, religious beliefs (or lack of) aside, that is really needed in this world. :D Enjoy your night/day!
Actually, less than two thousand years! The Roman Emperor, Constantine (a Pagan!) organised a group of scholars, in the 3rd Century, to decide what 'gospels' would be included in his new 'bible', from his assorted writings from the 'holy land'! The biggest irony here is, the Roman Empire was on it's arse, & had very limited power by that time, so leapt on the new religion as a means of keeping/extending it's power over the masses. They morphed, seamlessly, from a Military, to a Religious world power, in no time flat, & as the Catholic sect of Christianity, they're considerably richer, & much more powerful than they ever were as a Military Empire!
rodanste And yet, there is no magic translator to determine "this verse of the bible is literal truth" versus "this piece here is referenced not by the actual words given, but some kind of alternative definition or metaphor" [you'll note that the original Greek didn't give such an open ended term as we have in modern English].

“I’m good to people because it’s the way I want to be treated - I don’t believe I’ll be rewarded in heaven.” Thats the right way to pursue being good - not for a reward, but because it’s the right thing to do.
I learned that from my grandmother, who never put her own needs ahead of anyone else's in 96 years. She even had an envelope with $200 in it, marked for food at her funeral. My Grandma, was still feeding people after she died. Her family said she was a Christian. I knew she was far better than that. At her funeral, I told my mother that Heaven just became a place worth going to.
A profound point both you & Ricky make. Goodness can never be truly "good" if there is an expectation of reward. That's not good news for the world of religion I guess... ;-)

I believe in pure morality and goodwill that comes from human empathy with no agenda. And I think most people are spiritual they just don't know how to navigate spirituality without needing to believe in something other than themselves.
you could say christians are not very spiritual, they believe cause they have child traumas not because they have any deep understanding of anything, very few religions remain spiritual and very few people understand this, christianity is a dogma and buddhism is spiritual philosophy, someone decided to call them both religions and now people think they are alike, but faith and spirituality are 2 very different things and yes, i think atheists are more spiritual than christians because they know more about themselves
As an atheist, I agree with the sentiment, just one nitpick: I find the word "spiritual" to be a bit problematic, that unless you're using that word metaphorically or figuratively, it's a bit problematic because that implies the existence of spirits, which a large portion of atheists would have as much trouble believing in as in a god.

My answer to "what do you think happens to you when you die" is pretty simple - same shit that was "happening" to me for billions of years before I was born i.e. nothing. It's not like believers can't imagine what's that like - we cease to "exist" every night for some amount of hours, we don't perceive that time we lost. Most believers also don't think animals have a soul and can imagine a, for example, gazelle just disappearing from existence whenever it dies in the wild. It's almost assuredly the case same happens to us as well.
Well, when we sleep, we dream. So there is a level of consciousness still going on. I'd compare death to being put under anesthesia. You just never wake up.
Love how Piers asks about what made him stop believing. As if one single event could stop a belief instantaneously. And how presumptuous to assume some event made him change.
I think it's so rude to ask as well like it could be that something traumatic happened to him, you never know. A lot of people stop believing in their religion after witnessing or being involved in traumatic events.
If people don't believe in the tooth fairy, Easter bunny, Santa Claus, pixies and magic, why do they believe in a bearded man floating around in the sky, made up by men thousands of years ago as a way of comprehending things ?

You can very accurately measure the strength and justification of any institution by its reaction to mockery. If an institution is strong it is practically immune to it but if representatives of an institution get easily upset it is a sure sign of its intrinsic weakness and doubts over its justification.

Eloquently put- he's not denying other individuals' belief systems - but the most salient point being: Religion is a man-made construct - you do not need to believe in some ethereal deity to be honest, decent, & overall good to your fellow beings - there is no "monopoly" on such beahviours. One might posit that to be offended at the root of another's commentary, therein questions the faith of the offended recipient; surely, if your belief system is unshakeable, then it follows that no remark will destabilise same.

The idea of afterlife doesn't have to be strictly related to religion. We are some kind of energy, and energy can neither be created nor destroyed; energy can only be transferred or changed from one form to another. I think you can but it has to be when the're still developing. Maybe? I couldn't take a joke and would anger easily. As I was growing up I taught myself to laugh and not actually get offended by the dumbest shit. Of course that was me. I taught myself. No one else taught me that. So maybe it's something each individual has to learn for themselves? Then again if I had proper parents I may have had a sense of humour straight away. So maybe it depends on the events and people in your life that give you information and what you decide to do with that information? Meh. Who knows.

I have much respect and admiration for you. I find it hard to be so accepting. But because its hard does not mean I will stop. Even though we do not share a religion, we share a mutual respect of opinion. or so that is how i see it. I am athiest.
I am against any religion that preaches chaotic or evil conduct. Otherwise, I agree with all religion or lack thereof. It's all about the golden rule and charity. Harm no one and help those in need. That is what I strive for personally. I encourage everyone I meet to learn about other religions as a way to guard against ignorance. Often, evil people are disguised in the cloak of an otherwise good religion. Muslims all over the world have had to endure quite a bit of prejudice because of a few bad seeds. I hope that before long people will learn the truth of your faith so that the ignorance, and thus, the intolerance will come to an end.
tyrone turner You are right but let me add something to your point there is no Religion that preaches chaotic or evil conduct. A human should make something good out of a Religion and if a few Religious people are dooing bad things it doesn't mean all people that are in the very Same Religion are bad to.
This wasn't why jokes about God shouldn't offend believers. This was why not believing in God shouldn't offend believers. A much more obvious and easy to defend position.
