I met Ricky Gervais once, he was outside my place of work (waitiing for a phone call) I said Hi how's it going and he was very friendy. We had a chat, he's a top Bloke imo....

I'd personally say The Office is his best work, but Derek was great.
@MrStath1986
@MrStath1986 7 лет назад
Extras was Gervais and Merchant basically wanking themselves silly over all the new celebrity mates they'd made while harping on about how great their comedy formula was, and with the exception of the Christmas Special didn't work that well for me. Life's Too Short is easily weaker, but for me, it'd be Derek >> The Office >> Extras >> Life's Too Short. The stuff with Karl could be similarly judged.
@StormOneUK
@StormOneUK 7 лет назад
For me.. Extras > Office > Life's Too Short > Derek Derek is far too sentimental for my tastes really. Extras and The Office are equally entertaining to me and I watched Office back to back the day I got it, but the gags in Extras hit home even harder (IMO! Series 2 esp) partciularly Merchants gaffs, and the outtakes are one of those rare comic gems that can get a laugh out loud every viewing... Honestly though I hope some day the Microsoft training video gets released in good quality, as that's the funniest Gervais material IMO.. The XFM shows rank above any of the TV work too IMO

Steve Coogan was doing a straight up caricature of a well known British DJ type. With the office, Ricky used a 'fly on the wall' documentary approach to filming a multitude of characters in a claustrophobic environment. The David Brent character is buffoonish yet complex; there's lots of pathos and subtlety, it's not straight up comedic parody as with Alan Partridge. There have been many tragic/comedic protagonists; Basil Fawlty being another example. I would say though that the main predecessor to 'The Office' is 'This Is Spinal Tap'. I really enjoyed Alan Partridge but I don't think it's in the same league as The Office.
@Tinkerbelle610
@Tinkerbelle610 7 лет назад
Ricky cites Spinal Tap and Larry Sanders as his influences for the office; both pre-date Partridge.

Changing policy stances every few minutes, insulting the family of a dead veteran, insulting women, insulting Mexico, spouting bigotry at every camera opportunity, and inviting Nigel Farage to speak on his behalf (because Brexit is so world-infamous now, a co-conspirator of the operation was apparently the best choice to convince America to "take back control", as he put it.) That's just naming a couple, coming from a Brit.

Gervais is right on most points except when someone with more Witt on Twitter gives him some home truths and Gervais blocks them. Seen it one two many times, which makes Gervais a hypocrite. He's the most easily offended around, even when he states people don't have to be offended and he sometimes posts himself in a bad light as a protective mechanism. As for bullying, look what he did to Mel Gibson.

It was lazily written, manipulative (overuse of "sad" songs to try and compensate for the absence of actual emotion) and generally unfunny. Some people were tricked into thinking it was a clever, hard-hitting story about vulnerable adults, but it's far from it. The ONLY good thing in it was Karl Pilkington's character and Karl's effortless acting.

Ricky is correct with what he says about knee jerk reactions to jokes and fictional characters who are taken too literally. Many examples over the years, one example that springs to mind is Alf Garnet. Warren Mitchell was berated while on stage portraying this character but his explanation (which should not have needed explaining) was ignored as according to his protesters, he, the man, Warren Mitchell, was racist and that was that.

hahaha The most heroic part was when he resigned for getting caught stealing an election. It was also very heroic hen he made healthcare a money making scheme, instead of healing program. But probably the most heroic thing was Vietnam, and how he fabricated a fake attack on american naval ships to engage in a war that costs thousands of american soldier's lives, which he refused to withdraw from for no reason beyond greed. oh yes, a true american hero.
