I really admire Ricky Skaggs. He left a pretty successful career in mainstream country in order to pursue his musical passion of bluegrass. That is a rare thing. All musicians say they value artistic integrity over fame, money and success. Ricky Skaggs has proof that he genuinely believes it because he practiced that kind of integrity in his own life.
I’ve grown up around bluegrass my whole life. This right here is one of the absolute most amazing performances of bluegrass i have ever seen in my life good lord
I’ve followed Ricky Skaggs, world’s greatest bluegrass picker and singer, since we were both young’uns. He is gifted beyond imagination, humble, generous and kind. In my book, there’s no one better across the genres. I got to meet him a few years ago in Austin and was blown away by how down to earth and interested he was. After a long, two-show evening, he seemed happy to chat about music, photography, life. No wonder he is so dearly loved by all! Eternal gratitude for sharing your gift and bringing incalculable joy to so many.
There's no stronger statement you can make as a bluegrass picker than to take a Mr. Bill Monroe tune and flat-out shred it in traditional style. Love the KT take on this tune, much respect
I think this is the best bluegrass performance I have ever seen. These guys rock every bit as hard as a heavy metal band, it’s unbelievable. Kentucky thunder is the perfect name for them
Well, if "John" still hasn't gotten up after hearing this tune an ambulance needs to be rapidly dispatched to him with a defibrillator. Thanks to Sierra Hull for turning me on to "Get Up John" versions by both Bill Monroe AND Ricky Skaggs. AND KENTUCKY THUNDER IS NO JOKE. SERIOUS SHREDDERS ALL. I have a lot of catching up to do on bluegrass music. But the belated education will be well worth it.
When there are several guitars, it is common for one of them to capo up 7 and play in the same key (G) but using the C-chord shapes to give a differnt voice to the guitar, thusd broadening the sound of the band. Earl Scruggs did it when he fingerpicked "You Are My Flower".
@Chappinger12: it is common to use "cross-tuning" to play "Get Up John" (AKA "Sleepy-Eyed John"). It's basically an open D tuning, but with string pairs split up into different notes: F#A - DD - AA - DA (low to high). Most of the big names that play in this tuning keep an extra mandolin especially for that reason.
Look on Amazon for "The Mandolin of Bill Monroe" by Sam Bush. It's a nice DVD with tablature. The song is on page 27 of the book. You can also get in touch with Murphy Henry of "The Murphy Method," online. They'll help with individual songs if they don't already have a DVD lesson. Good luck with it!
@Maluquitozito Ever get to Madeira? Been to Jardim do Mar a couple of times. Warm friendly people, great geography, and loved the levada walks. - Mike from Niagara Falls, Canada
I am from the North too, and you can say what you want about men in the south. I will say this, most of them are damn good looking and boy do they dress nice.
@Rookieguitarboy try ultimate-guitar they have a lot of good stuff, and you can get chords, lyrics and tabs. If I remember I think they might even have mandolin tabs too.
WHAT A YOUNG MAN RICKY ALL MEN SHOULD BE HALF OF WHAT YOU ARE. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE HOW PROUD YOUR MOM AND DAD ARE. HOW COULD ANYONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND DISLIKE RICKY. WELL IT TELLS ME ONE THING THERE ARE FIVE MORONS IN THE WORLD.

i usually don't listen to bluegrass EVER, cus rock and metal is my thing, but i love ricky. his son Luke and daughter Molly are the worship leaders here at Morningstar church, and ricky's been hanging around a lot lately. i like luke the best cus he'll play his violin, then play electric guitar, then play his guitar with the violin bow. XD
Songs of my people , Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Georgia and the mountains of South Carolina!! I call Southwest Virginia home, FLOYD VIRGINIA!! Yee Haw!!!!!!
The guitar is in standard tuning only the low E string is tuned down to a D for the low note in the guitar breaks. I'm not sure what you call the mandolin tuning. Iv' heard it refered to as cross tuning and I've heard the term Get Up John tuning.
