Ricoh GR III Sensor Dust Prevention Hack

Ricoh GR III owners, along with most compact camera owners, have either had a battle with dust on the sensor, or have heard horror stories from those that have. This is not unique to the Ricoh GR III, but like most compact cameras, it is susceptible to it. Why? Because the lens is not removable, therefore, when dust attaches itself to the lens housing, then the lens is retracted back into the camera, it pulls the dust particles in with it, and they have to come to rest somewhere. And sometimes that's smack in the middle of your sensor.
This video explains how that happens, and a possible solution to prevent this from occurring. It includes the Ricoh GA-1 Adapter with a 49mm UV filter screwed in to help protect the lens from dust entering.
Keep in mind, having dust on the sensor, or any lens, is not the end of the world. Sometimes it's so small it might only show up with you are at the top end of your aperture (16 to 22), and even then, most photographers are used to dirty lenses at one point or another. I used Lightroom for everything, so if I had a dust issue I would just clone it out and move on. I've had many lenses with this issue, as I didn't feel like taking them apart and cleaning. So it's definitely not unique to this camera, or a deal killer by any means.
I will admit I don't even pay much attention to my Ricoh GR III photos regarding dust spots, as I'm using it for 'gritty' street scenes anyway, where i may be tempted to add artificial grain, and certainly not worrying about cloning out a small spec if I had to.

Good idea but it is not pocketable anymore

I know some want to carry in their pocket but I've never done that. I keep it wrapped and in my camera bag. Too expensive and heavy to carry in a pocket. But we're all different of course. Thanks for watching.

By forever pocketing this camera you'll be taking pictures of nothing but lint and dust, soon. 😄

Bonjour Camarade.

@DozierGraphic I love the Ricoh GRIII videos. It's the sole reason I found you. I'd like to see a video how you carry your GR III daily. I have both the Ricoh soft leather case GC-11 and the Lowpro Tahoe CS 20. Worst case senerio I have it in the GC-11 and then in a pocket. But I want it with me everyday, everywhere. Maybe I should use the belt loop. Haa!

I have opened my GRiii and removed the dust. Then again, I used to fix iPhones and Macs for Apple. The Ricoh is more of the same animal.

It's always doable, but I've never had to clean any other camera, and for $1000, shouldn't have to do it within a year of purchase. But doing it yourself can certainly save a lot of time and frustration. Thanks for the comment!

Does it impact the image quality? And is it possible to put a lens cap on the UV filter to avoid scratches if you put the camera in your bag?
@DozierGraphic
@DozierGraphic Год назад
Unless you're pixel peeping and zooming in not sure how one would notice any quality loss, so I can't answer that. Some will say it obviously causes a loss of quality, but my go-to question is always - are you blowing these up as prints? Or just posting online? If online, no one can ever say they'd notice a difference because all social media degrades the image quality dramatically anyway. I'm less concerned with some journey to 'perfection' and more concerned about keeping my gear in tact, performing well, etc. But not all minds think alike, fortunately!

I dont mind the extra length if its going to extend my sensors life, thanks! Btw I'm currently rocking a NISI adapter + a diffusion filter. Would that be the same as what you are doing? Still kinda new to photography world.

Does the uv protector screw onto the adapter? Or is it like stick on? Thanks

Do you use this adaptor all the time everyday? Do you ever saw dust on the sensor? Is GR II more sensitive dust collector from GR III? Thanks!
@DozierGraphic
@DozierGraphic 4 часа назад
The adapter is always on my camera, no reason not to. I've had dust on the sensor but not a HUGE amount. I learned where to clone it (suck for a $1000 camera tho!) Can't comment on whether one gets more dust than the other, assume they all suck dust in and that's just the way they are. Ricoh will never (and likely can't) fix that, but it's a real problem for sure.

Regarding dust, I read that if you remove the battery you can easily suck out the dust through there.

The JCC stick-on lens filter works perfect and still keeps the camera pocketable and compact.

Sticks on the front of lens housing
@DozierGraphic
@DozierGraphic Год назад
? is that a question or statement? It's officially the GA-1 lens coupler. It doesn't 'stick' to the front of the lens, but it does somewhat screw in and is secure.
@kenmonahan9924
@kenmonahan9924 Год назад
@@DozierGraphic it’s a statement you can get it on eBay and Amazon I have it on my GRiiiX and GriiiSE. They are great. I also have the extension tube but these are a permanent dust solution they are removable and come with 2 spare sticky rings for reattachment cost $15 or so and you can also buy a metal lens cap with a felt lining to keep everything clean. “Belt and Braces!” Let me know can send the link to your email

no. you'll need to google and find the right one. unfortunately each GR version has a different hood requirement.

this kinda defeats the purpose of it being so compact though...

I get that for most people Chris, and why some buy it, but I didn't buy it to put it in my pocket. And it actually helps me hold the camera in a scissor fashion that I can't do otherwise. Without the coupler, my hands would be too big to use the camera.

@@DozierGraphic i appreciate your reply. i do understand that for some its a good accessory and helps. just wanted to point out that for those of us who mainly use it as an EDC and want to maintain its compactness this wont work for us. id love if you or anyone had any alternatives because im also worried about dust
