Join me as I explore using the Ricoh GXR with the A16 24-85mm 16 megapixel lens module. It's a bit large, but makes up for it with a large APS-C sensor and nice optics.
Never heard of the Ricoh GXR before? It's a crazy camera system where the lens/sensor/processor are housed in a detachable unit that can be swapped out. That means with the same camera you could swap from APS-C to 1/2.3" compact sensors, from 16, 12 and 10 megapixels, CCD and CMOS sensor types. It's wild.
Check out the thread on the snappiness forum for more insider info on my GXR adventures:

I have two more modules as of this moment. Which one should I do next... 🤔 Keeping my eyes out for the others.

A12 28mm and how does it compares to the GR

Twelve years after I bought a new Ricoh GXR with the electronic viewfinder and the 28mm lens-module, 50mm macro lens-module, and 28-300mm lens-module, it remains my favorite camera. Since then I've bought a new Canon full-frame DSLR system, which I've since sold, and acquired new Panasonic Lumix Micro Four Thirds system, which today is my main kit. The GXR is a pleasure to use, despite the slow autofocus. The 28mm lens-module and 50mm lens-module both produce excellent results, unlike the 28-300mm lens module. If I had to keep only one digital system, I'd keep the GXR.

Awesome to meet someone still using it! And what a nice kit you have. How do you like the EVF? It's quite hard to come by but I really want to find one...

What a very pleasant surprise to come across your video. I was beginning to think I was the only guy out here still using the GXR. I bought mine (GXR with Leica M mount module) about six months before they stopped making them. Back then I had a lot of Leica M and thread mount lenses from my film days but couldn't afford the price of a Leica digital M camera so bought the GXR-M. Seven or eight months later when I heard Ricoh stopped making the GXR I bought another one, also with Leica M mount module. Then I bought another one when B&H decided to close them out. I like the camera so much I wanted to be prepared in case my original GXR conked out. I never had much interest in the other GXR modules with Ricoh lenses so auto focus speed means nothing to me. All my Leica lenses are manual focus. I also bought the EVF to aid manual focusing, a must have for manual focus lens use. The GXR allows one to magnify the EVF image to aid manual focus. Another reason I was pleasantly surprised is day before yesterday I received, from Funleader, their 18mm f/8 "Cap Lens." It's the tiniest lens I own and it works great on the GXR. Turns it into a 27mm equivalent snapshot camera. Put the GXR in aperture priority mode, select the desired ISO, and let the camera choose the shutter speed. Depth of field is rather incredible and should make for fun street shooting, and the image quality is really rather good for what the lens is and what it cost.. Anyway, thanks for a great video. It's nice to know I am not alone out here shooting the GXR. I look forward to your future GXR videos. Don

Thanks for the tip about the funleader 18mm! That does indeed look like a fun lens to play with. The Leica M module is one of the other modules I have and definitely my favorite. Right now I don't have any M mount glass and have just been adapting other mounts to it. 7Artisans and TTArtisans also have some cheap M mount glass I may try, along of course with some vintage stuff I might go after. Cool to meet someone else shooting the GXR!

Oh, and I'd really like to get the viewfinder one day. Keeping a sharp eye out for one at a decent price. I feel like that would help a lot with the manual focusing. The LCD with peaking isn't BAD, just not as fun or practical.

@@snappiness I did finally get a Leica digital M (Type 262) camera about four years ago but I still use the GXR a lot. I have Leica lenses dating back to 1930 and still use them on both the GXR and the Leica M digital. It surprising what you can get using such old lenses. That's one thing that has kept me a long time Leica fan, they always kept their M system compatible with even the oldest of their lens line, which means I can use all of them on the GXR too. Don't shy away from the 7 Artisans and TT Artisans lens line. They make some very good and affordable glass for the Leica M mount. I have several of their lenses. And don't let anyone tell you there's something magical about Leica glass. There isn't. Certainly they make great glass, but so does Voigtlander.

My venture into Ricoh started with the GX200. I loved it so much that I then bought a GRIII. However, the fixed 28 mm focal length didn't suit my shooting style and so I sold it. I have been looking for an upgrade to the GX200 with a zoom lens ever since And so I recently bought a GXR with the A16 zoom, the A12 50 mm equiv, and the A12 M-mount modules. I have only taken a few pictures with the 55 mm module so far. I agree with what you said about Ricoh, It takes really beautiful pictures. Colors, rendering, sharpness, clarity are all wonderful. Snap focus and full-press snap are ingenious. Build quality is excellent. The button layout allows for one-hand operation; but what I love most about Ricoh is its black & white. The tonality is so rich! OMG, it is glorious.

I still have GX 200 - it was a all rounder - and it gave mi wonderful pics - even awarded ! - Never regret it havent any succesor - because Ricoh decided to continue only with GR - which I never like - because it havent the zomm possibility. - GX 200 was a real joy to use. - I'm keeping it - because I wannt to stay alive and good for much more years ! - Now I have MX-1 - which is kind of similar - but the size of GX200 - was way better ;) -

First time learning about this. What a bizarre camera system. Curious the design concept benefits presented to the higher ups in the company to depart so radically from the current trends. Truly a keeper for digital camera history.

It is! And works really well - I thought attaching the modules would feel hacky, like it was going to break, but it was really well thought out. Feels very secure. And the body controls are great, IQ is great... just expensive and kinda pointless! haha. But cool!

Indeed, very ambitious design And its return would make a truly outdoor-fit camera system - swap lenses in a sand storm, underwater or in space 😊

I’ve found my copy to be, the lack of an a filter helps that and also the much underrated Ricoh glass. I did notice some small distortion on some cityscapes I took but nothing major. I’ll share some more photos on the snappiness forum. Looking forward to more videos 🤓

Nice review! I had the GXR with P10 and GXR Mount modules for a brief time. I was unsure of the concept, but I really liked it. The GXR Mount opens up a lot of possibilities. I ended up selling it though, I felt that the shooting experience was too dated (this was around 2017-2018). A bit slow operations, no wifi or usb-charging for travel, but most of all the EVF was too bad and did not allow for involved photography. I doubt they will try the concept again, but a modern version could adress all these issues.
@snappiness
@snappiness 2 года назад
Yes, it is quite slow and while it's a nice camera the only reason I have it is because of the uniqueness. I don't feel like it solves a problem that any other (usually cheaper) camera system offers. Still love my GR though. That'll never be replaced (except by a newer GR one day probably). As for the EVF, they did make one that mounted on the hotshoe. It's just difficult to come by.

You can buy the GXR, an IR module, and a special filter for less than the cost of one roll of Aerochrome film. Swap some color channels in photoshop, and you're at 90% the aerochrome look, and almost infinite shots.

So true, I wish they pick it back up. So nice to be able to upgrade not only the lens but also the sensor at the same time, plus I feel better about swapping these out in the field, than lenses, where dust can easily sneak its way in.

One of my biggest photography regrets is that I never purchased this system. I had an opportunity a few years back to buy the camera body, 3 sensor bodies and a half dozen batteries and filters with the electronic viewfinder for £250. Times were tough and I chose not to buy it thinking "there will always be another". However, in the last 3 years, the price of this camera has rocketed. Now the body alone will often cost in excess of £150 and the lens modules can be crazily priced! Big regrets ☹️

Oh man, that's crazy! Just the EVF alone is that much right now. I have it on my list but don't know if I'll ever get it.

I remember seeing this when it came out. I thought, "Who the hell is going buy this weird system at this price. This camera won't last." It failed to sell. Then Ricoh bought Pentax. lol Nice pics. What price did you end up getting it for? Pricey on ebay because not many around I guess.
@snappiness
@snappiness 2 года назад
Lol, totally. I don't really know what problem they were trying to solve with it. I think it would've been cool if the price had been cheaper, but then again, maybe that would mean it wouldn't have been built so darn well. I bought a large lot of two bodies and three modules for $500. Not all the modules are worth very much, but two of mine were :)
