Baxter and Jonathan dive into crazy signature models from Fender And Gibson and who should get one? Do you think Slash needs another 5 more signature Les Paul signature models? Let us know who you think needs ones.
The thing about Slash model guitars that always makes me smile is that Appetite For Destruction was not recorded with a Gibson Les Paul but a replica. (As all of us already know the story). Slash is a great player but I still think that fact is funny.
@@silverfr3ak To me it is even more ironic that so many artists have signature models of a guitar that is already Les Paul’s signature model. I’ve been waiting for over 30 years for a Strat player to tell Fender that they want their signature Strat to be an Eric Clapton signature model.
Yep, as an added funny aspect. The Seymour Duncan pickups in his original, Derrig Les Paul quit working last week or so and he had them replaced with his signature Seymour Duncan pickups, not with the Gibson Slashbuckers..
@@Frosenborg That’s probably because he has a contract with SD and has to use them. That’s why they can’t call them Slashbuckers anymore. What’s really funny is Derrig said those were just some pickups he had laying around.
The Johnny Marr Jaguar is cool because it’s a different type of Jaguar- he worked with them to design the wiring so it does things different from a standard jag, which makes it unique and “his” guitar (not just something with his name on it)
If you think about it, every Les Paul ever made is a Signature guitar. It's like when Gretsch approached Horton Heat to make his signature guitar. His response was "my guitar is a Chet Atkins Country Gentleman. It's already a signature." Props to the marketing man who successfully argued against that logic.
Why can I not get a Nigel Tufnel Signature Series Flying V? It would also be cool if it came with a violin pick. I would seriously fork over tens of dollars to make that happen.
Frusciante’s said no a number of times. Every time they asked him for a sig series, he said he only plays old guitars, so selling a sig to “sound like him” felt insincere in a way.
So would his signature guitar have a secret stash spot to store your Heroin...? --- I'm guessing that may be a factor into why nobody has associated their name with his.....
@@csnide6702 I don't see why that would be. There have been plenty of musicians with worse (and far more ongoing) issues than he's had that have no trouble getting endorsements.
I like signature guitars when they’re actually their design- EVH, Bo Diddley, Jem, Red Special- but I really don’t see the point of a Paul or a Strat painted a certain colour with a signature on the headstock and an extra zero on the price.
All the signature guitars that I have EOB Strat, Robert Cray Strat, Flea Jazz Bass and J Mascis Jazzmaster (+ 13 non signature instruments) Appart of obvious differences as sustainer or hardtail strat there are very personal choices such as neck carve and other little touches. On all of these instruments I got cca 15-20% off the standard prices here in Europe (eob and flea 860 euro each, Cray 500 euro and J Mascis 420 or so) on for some extra 20% price over player series they provide based on my experience more resonant, more personal and overall keepers in collection. I like these instruments for what makes them connect with me differently.
Didn't Gibson do 3 or 4 John Lennon 160's with the original burst, the psychedelic paintjob, then the stripped bare wood finish as he did with his 'original'. As well as an 'anniversary' John Lennon model which may have had different bracing? I'm not complaining, just commenting. I wouldn't mind a 60's 160e for the right price, lol.
like the Jim Adkins tele... Jim helped design the guitar with a guy he knew from Fender, and He plays that guitar exclusively... like right off the shelf
What about situations like the Greg Koch signature models from Reverend? He worked with them on the design, the specs and the pickups. The Gristle 90 sells out before it can even get into stock. And, Greg plays them.
The funniest signature model is the new Jimi Hendrix SG Custom. He played it like once on TV, said he didn't like it, and Gibson is like "YES, BUILD IT! CHARGE TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS!" With that said... I still want one.
You guys missed the best looking of telecasters... Quilt top, carved neck heal, chambered body , flamed maple center block , flame neck , Merle Haggard Telecaster!!!
Mayer never played his signature strat except in the "bigger than my body" video... These guys are slagging Jim from Jimmy Eat World, but he actually helped design it 1 on 1 with Fender... and has played it for every (electric) song, every gig since it came out...
The fact that Gibson has never reproduced The Fool is astounding to me. They must really have a sour relationship with Clapton now or something and that's really sad because Gibson has always brought out an animal in him.
It's a business. Signatures aren't always earned by your amazing ability to play. They are marketing tools to capitalize on the player's audience. Misha Mansoor has a signature Peavey amp and is known to use a Axe FX.
They're also sometimes used to give a company an avenue to get new features into their product line. They mention Jim Adkins in this video and he's openly stated in interviews that part of the reason he got a signature model is that Fender was looking at an opportunity to do a P90 set neck Tele and the timing lined up.
My favorite example of a signature gone wild is the Music Man Albert Lee model. They made a version of it with Humbuckers (which I own and love) and Al had to have been scratching his head and say "Eh... OK". But then they took it a step further and made it into a bass and called it the "Big Al". I laugh every time I see one because it is such a wonderful departure from what the original purpose of that model was originally.
I was just thinking “why hasn’t there leaks been the Keith Richards telecaster”? I mean every year. Just a constant thing. Or a Lemmy Rick bass. Or a Richie Blackmore strat… whatever. Those guys should always just have a model of their guitars
When Rick Beato got a signature guitar I knew it was out of control, signature guitars should be a guitar made famous by a great player, usually modded to their own specs. I have one signature guitar, the best one ever, a Les Paul(but I still want a Jimmy Page model)
Dude has 2.5 million subs, and signature models are literally just marketing. Of course he was gonna get a signature model. If I was a great, respected, world famous guitarist and I'd modded my guitar to be really individual and cool and totally my own thing, the last thing I'd want is a bunch of sweaty teenagers with Epiphone versions of my gear and a bunch of blues lawyers with copies of my stuff locked up in a display case. Mod up your own damn guitar! So, basically, I agree with you. The Les Paul gets a pass because he actually designed the thing from the ground up and worked his butt off to persuade someone to actually make it, but all other signature stuff just needs to stop.
It’s weird these apparently great RU-vid guitarists can’t write a song anyone wants to actually listen to...to save their life. You’d think being a guitar genius would translate to writing cool songs.
@@84kjk Nail on the head. I returned to guitar in 2019 after not playing for a while and had no idea these RU-vid guitarists were a thing. I watch some and thought, fuck this garbage.
The one guitar I wish I could have is a faithful replica of Nels Cline's 59 Jazzmaster he got from Mike Watt. That guitar looks more comfortable than your favorite pair of jeans and just screams at me to play it.
I love Slash, dont get me wrong, but I think he has sold out with his signature guitars. He shows up at a concert, plays something you’ve never seen before, once, they lunch it as a new signature model and then he never plays it again. I saw a video of gnr playin patience a few days ago and slash is playing a new acoustic... so its comming. Dont you find it suspicious that he rarely plays his own signature guitars?
Tbh i don’t watch a lot of guitar videos that don’t involve actual playing, but I make an exception for you two. Wonderful insight, charisma, and positivity and you both always make a lot of cool references and remain respectful. Kudos!♥️
The curious thing about signature models is the implication the company's production models aren't artistically sufficient. Yet, most artists built their names on the production models.
That's a good point.Unless they really modded out their guitar to become a monster on it's own that you can't get on their regular models it'$ all about a money grab...J.Mayer..Mayor.. I don't even know or care about that dude...that's what we don't need.As much as I love Slash, same thing.
IDK a lot of pros "tweak" their gear considerably to get the sound/specs they want. In those cases, I think it makes a certain amount of sense to do a production model that reflects those changes.
Personally I don't get "signature guitars"..I don't want someone else's idea of what a guitar is supposed to be, I want my own guitar. And now signature guitars are passed out to anybody, like youtubers for example, like Darrel Braun etc, who have done zero contribution to the music industry but they help sell guitars on their channel...it is all about money and not music. It makes me sick!,,sorry, I had to get that out of my system!
I agree in general about Sig guitars but man my Jimmy Page Mirror Tele is absolutely astonishingly great. Also some of the earlier Clapton Sig Strats are phenomenal too.
I don’t have a signature guitar, but would gladly own the right one. It would have to sound and feel perfect for me. I do have the Muddy Waters tribute MIM Telecaster and LOVE it. It feels and sounds so perfect to me that I can honestly say it’s the perfect guitar that I never knew I always needed.
Love the videos- still trying to get past thinking everytime a show starts "so thats what paul stanley looks like with ears"! You guys have a great balance of personalities-keep up the good work.
who deserves a signature ?? Poison Ivy Rorschach from The Cramps needs a signature Gretsch,, that'd be the COOLEST YES we need a Richard Lloyd strat,, also I wish they would bring back the Wayne Kramer MC5(flag) strat.
Frank Black Tele, & the Joey Santiago Gold top.As far as influences on key Alt bands, the Pixies have got to be # 1.And they can do a Precision for Kim Deal, while they're at it.
@@JefAlanLong I figure this is the case with many of those signatures that are not there. I can almost hear Keith mumbling something under his breath “blah, blah….bloody rubbish…blah blah”. And then laughing as he hangs up
Is it weird that I think any and all Les Paul models that have been made "signature" models for somebody else is sort of blaspheme? Like, its Les Paul's signature model... get your own doodes. Also like a stock guitar with a different paint job, NOT worthy of a signature model... its just a stock guitar folks decide they can charge more for.
I have mixed feelings about the signature series since you tend to want to only play that particular artists music and it’s harder to feel free to play and explore other music! My favorite signature series Fender guitar is the new Kenny Wayne Shepherd!! He added so much input into this BEAUTIFUL guitar that I am in awe over its appearance and tone!! This is a great model!!
As a left handed player I hate Fender for not make the most any of the signature series guitars in left handed. I think the Kurt Corbin Jag was, but other than that I don't remember any other models being available in left handed, unless you pay for a custom shop model.
I was searching for a new inexpensive semi-hollowbody guitar. Came across the Epiphone "Emily Wolfe Sheraton", loved everything about it. Honestly I had to look up her music after I committed to getting the guitar. Love her music and the guitar even more!
If I could afford another Guitar I think I would be very happy with the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Strat. I like the neck the fret size the color the fact that it’s chambered and IMO he has definitely earned one if that still a thing. Good video guys.
I own an Albert Hammond Jnr. Stratocaster and it's my favourite guitar. I had no idea who he was when I first saw it, but I liked the way the neck felt and I liked how it sounded so I got it and I love it.
I do own 5 different signature models from different manufacturers and many other guitars similar to models/ colors that some of many favorites play. Do they inspire me to play like my guitar hero’s... yeah, can I play like them... no, but they Inspire me to play. That’s the most important thing, playing!
I have an LTD BK-600/Bill Kelliher signature model. Love the full thickness, and the neck is sick, and the military green sunburst in satin just looks sweet. Only has a tiny bit of the back of the headstock, so most folks would not even know it is a sig model. I like them that way.
THE BOSS has the MOST iconic guitar of all time!!! Why his hasn’t become a signature model is freaking beyond me. He is America. Cmon, Fender! I would buy that in a second and I hate signature models.
It’s funny that some of the most successful and longest running signature models are from artist. Like J Mascis with his squire jazzmaster or Zach Myers for PRS. I think a lot of people know about their guitars but may have never heard their music at all
I'm not sure if anyone has said this but Bruce Springsteen's main guitar that people think is a Tele, is actually an Esquire that had a neck pickup added to it.
I am really excited for the KWS Strat. I ordered one from my local shop in February and Fender seems to keep pushing the date out. Last I heard was late August now.... I get it with what is currently going on in the world, but the anticipation is killing me. LOL
I’m thinking of getting a Brad Paisley Tele. It’s the only way you can get a V neck, vintage tuners, 3 barrel brass bridge and a NITRO finish. Some silver sparkle and a little relic’ing is but icing on the cake! Then there’s the Paisley Esquire, too.
You guys are becoming the video discussion of trending topics on TGP 😄 I honestly enjoy your take though, saves me going through 30 pages of ranting posts 👍
Thanks a ton Chris! That is a disturbing idea:) TGP, yikes:)! And thrilled to save some time for you along the way! Have a super day and thanks a ton for sharing!
Any ideas why the fender Eric Johnson thinline stopped being made? Signature player fame aside its a really totally fantastic guitar! and quite unique along side his solid body versions. Noticed now fender are only doing the f-hole strats in exotic wood custom shops now. Now they have worked out how to do a thinline contoured strat, maybe the exotic wood veneer works much better in the construction You alsomentioned that there is a financial element to making artists series, wondered do artists bare some the costs against the profit as well for an artist series? Love the EJ thinline !
I have asked this as well and absolutely loved that guitar! I regret not getting one when they were in production. I think the answer comes down to sales though...unfortunately they did not sell enough to keep them in production.
@@CasinoGuitars I thought perhaps maybe it might have been down to the joints that are sometimes visible in the body so they can do the chambering, hence perhaps the new custom shop exotic wood topped veneer's they're now doing? just for the select few who can afford those though... Its a shame they weren't as popular, They are fantastic players, slightly warmer rounder sound. Amazing neck and pick-ups, Collectors peice in time perhaps, wonder how that tone wood will age...? Enjoyed your EJ Virginia demo ! 👍👍🔥🎸
i’m glad you brought up the jimmy eat world (jim adkins) signature. i’m a huge jimmy fan, so maybe biased, but the ja-90 is a 12” radius and tv yellow finish away from being the perfect guitar in my mind. also, since they are from mesa/phoenix, it makes sense jim got a fender signature with their headquarters in scottsdale.
Jim helped design the guitar... he knew a guy who worked at Fender and was jusing the Fender TC-90 for recording... Jim was asked by his friend at Fender how he liked it, Jim made some critiques on what could improve it, and it became Jim's signature model. Jim plays his sigs every gig, and his are all stock, off-the-shelf, guitars.
I had no idea who Tash Sultana was before she got a signature guitar. She seems pretty cool and I'm glad I discovered her. The guitar is pretty cool too. I guess I'm a bit ignorant because I had no idea who Jim Root was and he has like tons of signature guitars.
I love signature guitars. I have three of them and most of my others guitars are colors of artists I admire. I like them because they are different than the model they are based on. What is the oldest signature series guitar still in production???
Same. They’re fun. I never think of it as “trying and failing to get a tone you never will achieve” but it’s just fun to feel as cool as your guitar hero in your bedroom.
@@tommilitello198 Well.......not really. Les Paul is a model. You can't have a Slash SIG series Les Paul right? I mean whose SIG series is it at that point? But a lot of people do go that route with it. But once again, a Les Paul is a model of guitar not a sig series.
watched this vid while playing my Pete Thorn signature Suhr. i love pete's channel & his playing, but honestly bought the guitar because every spec on it was exactly what i'd custom order in the first place (& it would've been cheaper than a custom order)! i almost picked up an HER strat when they came out because i loved the color - had no idea who HER was (still don't really).
I had a Jimmy Vaughan sig strat and you could just tell that the finish was an inch thick. I stripped it to refinish it in nitro and found a full Buddy Guy polka dot paint job under the Jimmy Vaughan white. They apparently weren't all-knowing with all of the sig series and had to recycle bodies that didn't have orders.
I still wish Gibson would do another Angus Young SG. Angus is the most iconic and known SG guitar player and Gibson only made one signature and Tony Iommi has had more than one signature SG. Angus deserves more SG’s
Where’s my signature? I’ll take a tele, Esquire, Les Paul, SG, Gretsch, Dano, ESP, Harmony or a Heritage. Or perhaps a Godin? Invest now and the return in the future will definitely be huge.
The Jim Adkins (Jimmy eat world) tele I think works as a signature model because it is so unique. Too many signature models just look like a regular version of the guitar with a name slapped on it.
He's openly said in interviews that part of the reason he got a signature model is that Fender was already looking to do a Tele with some of those specs and it lined up with what he wanted.
@@user-do2ev2hr7h Kinda but not. Jim was friends with a guy at Fender HQ in Arizona... Jim was using a TC-90 guitar quite a bit while recording... His friend at Fender knew that and asked for his feedback on the guitar, and he made suggestions... The guy at Fender got with some other people in the office and they made a signature model for Jim, who has played it ever since... His road and studio guitars are unmodified production models right off the shelf
hey Jonathan-- the mega hammer-on/pull-off solo from Sweetness was, according to Jim Adkins, totally lifted from Doug Gillard's solo on Guided By Voices' "I Am A Tree". it rules so hard its difficult to wrap my tiny brain around its awesomeness. if you're not familiar, check it!
They need to give someone a signature Slash signature Les Paul. Three layers of signature. The James Lennon Slash Les Paul. It's so weird that all Les Paul's are technically signature guitars.
When I was in my late teens/early twenties, back in the early aughts, I had a pro-model skate deck. I was almost famous for something. Too bad I was also a professional drinker.
@@gordonhuskin7337 a smaller company out of philly called old school. My problem is that I was a little bit ahead of the curve. I skate transition pretty much exclusively, and back then pool/bowl skating wasn’t as popular as it is these days
I have little doubt that we will see a Gibson and probably Epi run of the Peter Green/Gary Moore/Kirk Hammett Greenie in the next year or so. I do have boatloads of respect for Kirk on taking that thing out and touring with it.
There are some signature guitars I respect and some that I don't. To use strats as an example because it seems like everybody and their mother can get a Fender sig strat, there are some that if you take the artist's name off, it's basically just a regular strat and part of me thinks what's the point? There are others that only exist because the artist wanted a specific pickup configuration or wiring setup or something else that makes it different to any other strat on the market. That seems more valid to me but even then, some artists with a sig like that might play amazing versions of it from the custom shop while the rest of us are stuck with a made in Mexico version or whatever that the artist wouldn't even be caught dead using. But there are plenty of artists who'll play their sigs right off the shelf and I respect that. As you've pointed out, there's many great artists without sigs that might be deserving, but it's possible some of them don't want to play that game (and maybe some that wanna play it a bit too much and want more of a cut then the company is willing to hand over)
These dudes are aloof as to why a Jim Adkins (Jimmy Eat World) tele exists, based on two songs they heard on mainstream radio 20 years ago... Nevermind they've released 10 studio albums, 3 live albums, and several compilations since 1993, and Jim plays his off-the-shelf signature teles every single gig... it's the only electric guitar he uses all night long
Kiefer Sutherland is a pretty good guitar player and owns a studio. He helps out new artists as he has a band and lots of connections. I have his signature guitar and it is one of my favorites, love the ebony fingerboard. There were only a little over 150 made and good ones are hard to find.
I'm kind of stunned you made it through this whole video focusing obsessively on the volume of products Slash has with Gibson like that selection isn't completely tiny in comparison to all the Eddie Van Halen offerings over the years, from Kramer to EBMM to Peavey to EVH Gear/Fender. I mean, come on, now. That's a GLARING omission in this discussion. As for people who deserve them who don't have them - Leo Nocentelli Fender Starcaster (or Gibson ES-335, since he plays that now), Ty Tabor Fender Strat (Elite, if we're being sassy), and maybe a Larry Lalonde Fender Strat. Love you guys. :)
I do like signature series. It's cool to see a guitar you own being played in a video by the artist. A special color in a limited run is weird/cash grab to me.
I would like an Andy Summers telecaster or Billy Gibbons LP, but since they are priced out of my budget I'll just grab the next guitar that catches my eye.
