I rode those "vintage cars" before they WERE vintage cars. I rode them when they were in revenue service. I'm 78+ years old. I'm a NY'er born and bred. I rode the subways to high school and graduate school. I rode on the old IRT "Low-V" cars, the R1-9's on the IND, the BMT "Standards", and whatever was running through the mid 1960's. I was on the first train on the Rockaway Line. I've got a lot of history and memories in my head. I'll just leave it at that.
Here Be Barr In addition to running the vintage subway train on Sunday's, the MTA is also running vintage buses. The buses will run, weather permitting, Monday thru Friday, 9AM to 5PM from December 3rd to December 21st on the M42 bus in Manhattan.
great video as always. the old subway car reminds me of the old subway cars we have here in England. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Underground_1938_Stock
This is so cool, I'm from the UK and we typically have a less enthusiastic attitude towards dressing up out of fear of looking silly. But it's nice to see how people did dress up to create a nostalgic atmosphere. I'm saving up for a big NY trip and I'll definitely stop by here in a 3 piece! (maybe a pocket watch too)
When I graduated HS and started working in Manhattan, this was the style of the subway car I took from 179th Street to midtown. A 'token' was 15 cents then. Video bought a smile.
@@clubsnatcher of course there would be ads, there are ads on all subways, in Philly our subway cars are from the 80s and there are ads in the same spots.
Great video as always Jon & Adriana :) You both looked very dapper in your 1930's style and I love Adriana's hat! This is such a great festive NYC tradition especially when family comes to stay over Christmas, we did this last year and it's fun, it really gives you that lovely festive feeling. I love the Christmas wreaths on the outside of the trains. We're definitely going to do this one Sunday before Christmas this year 🚆🎄☃️🗽
I rode those cars frequently, beginning in the mid- sixties. Usually the GG, F, and E on the IND lines. There's something a short video cannot really convey. Those cars had a distinct whirring motor sound, and SMELL... like the way an old mechanic's garage that's been there for a half- Century can. Oil, soot, dirt, all combined, hanging on the undercarriages... I remember it vividly. The underseat heaters, when they operated at all- had two settings- inadequate, and glowing bright red - calf-toasting- max. New York was once a great city. I'm glad I was born and raised in Queens... wouldn't trade it for any other place.
You described this really well! This was the experience back then. The worst of it was peak summer during evening rush hour. With so many people jammed in up against each other and the only ventilation coming from open windows and whichever ceiling fans were operational, it was hard to tell if all the sweat against my skin was mine or a mix of the 4-5 people crushed up against me. July and August PM rush hours were awful. But all the rest of it was so unique and memorable. I took the same lines frequently, as well as the A. At some point in the 70s the CC (later, the C) replaced the E in Brooklyn and Queens.
That is one beautiful train! Love how everyone is dressing up for this, so awesome! Great to see new york preserve these things and do this for the public! I wish they did that here in toronto ! They scrap all the old subways but to be fair we do have our streetcars. Every summer they bring out a PCC every sunday between like 1-5 or something and let the public ride it free of charge. Also they just finally rebuily a GM Fishbowl bus. (the ones from Speed) We used them up until about 2011. Loved those buses, miss em everyday. Thanks for the video.
I remember riding those trains as a kid, especially the seats the smell, the fans and the way the train would hum as it started moving and picking up speed. I am glad I grew up in the time that I did when New York City was New York City.
The smell was the animal fat that was used to lubricate the axles that were attached to the motors and as the train is started it melts the fat from the heat from the motors. This was old technology from that time.
Have you ever seen the movie, A Bronx Tale? You look entirely like the character Mario. (Not the Nintendo character). The suit and the hat, everything. I'm mad I missed that, I hope they do another one after Covid passes.
They did NOT have a Public Announcement system in the '30's. My dad worked on building and installing the very first one in the mid-50's. I THINK that it was on the A line, but I'm not sure. One of the things that I noticed was that when the trains were moving, the doors between the cars were still open. That's the way things were until much later, you could walk the entire length of the train (or even ride between the cars (which was definitely frowned upon)) if you could squeeze between the crowd.
I was always taking the Nostalgia train every Sunday from Thanksgiving Sunday to The Sunday before New Year Day. Did the whole route numerous times. Sometimes I had to cut it short due RANGERS games. By getting off at 34th street.
I remember in 1975 taking this F train from Sutphin Blvd station as a kid I was 4 when my dad brought me in the train I fell in love I loved the way it sounded it was the last car i think. As years pass by I thought I was imagining it but every time I see this train I tell myself it was real. My dad took this train he worked at the Bowery he rode the J train when it was elevated in Jamaica center.
The old subway map showed the 3rd Ave. El, The Polo Grounds - Yankee Stadium shuttle, and the Fulton line from Grant to Lefferts, where the A train runs now.
Just happened upon this very cool subway train this weekend!! We had no idea these were in service. Coming from Texas for a few days and definitely had a treat riding uptown on the F train in a 1930’s car!!
i wore my Navy Dress Blue uniform to NYC for new years eve2009/2010 . I wish i had known about this it would be fun to get a group of sailors to ride this in their Dress uniforms which look unchanged from that era, same with the army now that they are going back to the pink and greens.
ok people do to me being nice... this year the hoilday train is to run starteding dec 1 to dec 29th from 10am to 5pm right now.. route is unknown.. but for it for sure going to 2 ave on the f line....
I usually get in the first car and look in at the conductors door window and it looks like the 1930s as he goes by the subway stop. Even in the updated subway cars.
Just talked to some friends about this. They’re all weaboos (American teenagers who love all Japanese pop culture, specifically the anime genre of television), so they really want to go on this subway train as anime characters.
The things we take for granted change so gradually over time that we hardly notice while it's happening......I hadn't been in a train for many many years until recently.....It was nothing like I remembered....It was clean, quiet and comfortable.....sometimes change is for the better......great vlog...you both looked fantastic.
Love the period dress. That is pretty cool. Okay on a sadder note, I remember those cars from the mid(ish) 70s and the lights did flicker frequently. How often does NY Metro run those trains ( like all of Dec)?
You left out something, the conductor had to ride between the cars in order to open and close the doors, you also left out what time you had to show up.
Thank you a lot for sharing ! Very brilliant idea, it's really super beautiful and interesting. All the capitals of the world should do the same thing in their subway.
Wow. I have been living in N.Y.C. since.1987' I never knew about this. Soooo cool. Thank you guys. I will ride the nostalgia subway.car when this thing goes.away. hopefully sooner.than later.
I rode that train from W. 4 to Rockafeller Center. It was so awesome. Yep, get there early for sure!! I waited a full half hour letting all the regular trains ride by. Totally worth it. I want to try to catch it again this time from 2nd ave. Side note: You should check out the New York Transit Museum in Brooklyn. They have really cool vintage trains you can check out. Yep, no intercoms back in those days. Don't forget the nostalgic bus rides too. They have a vintage bus at 34th Street/Herald Square you can check out. 😉
No tall people allowed…those ceiling fans would be dangerous! But LOVE the nostalgia they bring! I get a kick out of the adds from that era, and the feeling of the train as it bumps and sways along the rails. I’m an urban geek, so I made it a point to be on those old cars…I dressed up too, glad I wasn’t the only one…but seriously, it was like a time capsule, a bit rougher ride, but so worth it! Although not as old, starting in 1954, our (Toronto) Gloucester red subway cars look almost identical. As a kid, I was terrified, because the power would constantly have intermittent contact with the 3rd rail, leaving everyone in pitch black…and damn they were fast for that era. My poor grandmother use to babysit me when I was little, and i’d have a full on temper tantrum, terrified to get on the subway, convinced it was going to crash…ahhh memories! Now, you’re lucky if after 4 or 5 trains pass by, you can finally, barely squeeze into one! At least the new cars are air conditioned, and much more comfortable, there’s just too many people, or not enough trains.
Or a hand, perhaps. Rode in these cars for many years and the fan blades were out of reach for many. But if someone did that, being true New Yorkers, we would all try to find the missing digit while calling the person a dumbass or worse. NYers have hearts of gold, but we’re very direct. ;)
We used to have trains in Sydney that were in service from the 1920s until the 80s they were the best trains the old red rattlers. You both looked real cool and great video there
