@@bbhfjdy9175 that is absolutely correct, not everyone agrees with me, nor I with everyone. But our religious compatriots do not bomb abortion clinics, for example. I worked in a "coffeeshop" for a few years. Always the tourists that came down were scared to go outside because they thought maybe police would bother them. ( some people get pretty paranoid from weed lol ) So as an example, i took a joint outside to the cop that was patrolling, and asked him for a light. He gave me a lighter, i lit the joint, thanked him and went inside again. U should have seen the look on the tourist face. Priceless. Ofcourse the cop knew me, and knew i worked in that shop as it was his patrol route, but still. Proud to be Dutch!

I used to live in the Nederland's and 1 night I was riding home on my bike mortal drunk and I fell off and was laid in the middle of the road just as a police car was coming down the road. So the police picked me up and put me in the back of the police car then locked my bike to a lamp post. I thought they had arrested me for riding a bike drunk but they took me home then the next morning was a knock on my door and it was only the two cops from the night before they’d been and got a police van and went and brought me my bike back now you can’t get better cops than that anywhere, if it was the U.K. where I’m from they would of arrested me for riding a bike drunk.

It would have been totally reasonable to fine you or have you sleep it off in the drunk tank, but it seems that they had a priority of making sure you were ok. That is very admirable, not unheard of in the US, though not as common as it should be. My dad was a cop for some time and he drilled into my head how important it was for the police to work toward obtaining and maintaining public trust. With it a cop is safer and they are more effective, without it everyone is in more danger and worse off.

The problem is, when you know a lot and have very little real worries - you demand from your government a lot, so you're always discontent with something. But when you are uneducated, know nothing, fight for scraps every day - then the fanatical devotion to your government or country is one of the few things that keeps you going. And when you do criticise the government it's not because the government works against you - it's because it robs you of the chance to deitify it in some way. It's a feudalistic system that was proven to work - as long as lords and royalty spread the narrative that this is the order of things and as long as they play the benevolent benefactors in a lore they themselves created, they can keep dumping on peasants who don't know any better, and recieve nothing but admiration in return.

This summer, my ex wife went mental and started to steal bikes and flowers out of others properties. I came home late that day with my 8th year old son and found the police at my door. They asked me if I lived in this house and I confirmed. They went with me in the house and explained the situation. Because my son was scared by this, the two cops played with him for 1,5 hour. They let him 'arrest' me with there handcuffs. My ex wife was traceles that weekend. But the next day, the two cops came to my house with some toys for my son. I deeply respect how they handled the situation and turned this bad situation 180 degrees around for my 8 year old son. I respect those guys. They are human and friendly. They found my wife the next day. She has to do some 20 hour community work. But my son never knew about this. I really love our cops how they handle situations in my country.

On my trip to Amsterdam 10 or so years ago, I was outside the train station when I saw a cop approach a man smoking a joint. The cop politely asked him to put it out since you aren't supposed to be smoking pot out in public (that's what the coffee shops are for). Pissed off, the man flicked the lit joint at the cop hitting him square in the chest. The cop stomped the joint out, picked it up and threw it in the trash. He then just calmly walked away. To put it mildly, that's not how that situation would have worked out in the states.

NaoTa MF Dutch polis (at least the ones in Amsterdam, I can't speak for elsewhere) are ridiculously chilled though. If that had happened in the UK a particularly nice copper might have just told you to put it out if you weren't being too much of a nuisance otherwise, but if you reacted like that you'd get lifted instantly. Amsterdam police seem to have the attitude of "Meh, fuck it. It's not worth the hassle so just forget it" for any minor crime that doesn't really matter, and in my opinion they're right. People don't see the police as the enemy and I assume they feel they can trust them when something actually is a problem. Like in the clip, all the people who if they were me, here in the UK, would be thinking "Shit, polis!" And be a bit on little on edge, as where they're working things might not be quite 100% legal, whereas they seem pleased to see them like "Ahh, it's big Dexter! How's things?"

@maxvandenberg955

MJyze Well see here, weapons, are forbidden*. I believe people can receive a jail sentence of up to 8 years. And because most citizens obey most laws, there is no market for these weapons. Exception: Criminal Markets. But they cost a lot more there. If people have that much money, they don’t need to be a criminal. Therefore there are fewer weapons. Also, we don’t have the mentality that if we don’t agree with something we should start shooting at people. So why do we need a weapon? Break-ins happen, but they generally do not want to kill people. They just want our TV or something like that. Also, it wouldn’t be self-defence because of two reasons: 1. It’s illegal to own a weapon* 2. It’s completely out of proportion. Which means that here someone would be charged with homicide at the very least. That could equal an 8-year sentence + some extra years for using a weapon, people would have to serve for >10 years. And a criminal record. With one here, people can hardly get a job. And yes we also have crazy people, but there are institutions that deal with them. *Illegal to an extend that makes it for most people illegal, however with a lot of check and a lengthy waiting time people can have a weapon for hunting. With the following conditions: Background screening (valid for so many years, like 5) Practical and theoretical exams passage Need 40 ha of area, owned by the applicant, a friend of the applicant (with permission), a family member or a relative of the applicant or the applicant needs a lot of money Insurance to hunt Hunting can only be done during certain seasons Permission from the police (background check and other criteria such as a weapon safe, the police will visit the applicant's home address to see if the weapons safe is secure and secured). But that still forbids people from using the weapon(s) for other purposes than hunting. Other exceptions are sports using weapons but those also need prior permission and checks, similar to the one above. Of course there are people with guns, like law-enforcement. We’re not that stupid. We know that we can’t stop a terrorist with a gun with our bare hands. And some criminals have them as well. But I don’t see the need, as do most people to own or open carry or both a fire arm or other weapon. In general, most people will not be shot if they don’t get involved in criminal activities. And even those who do get involved, generally don’t carry a weapon let alone a fire arm. There is a reason I feel comfortable having a chat with the police. And not just me, a lot of other people are not afraid of the cops cause we know they won’t start shooting unless it’s absolutely necessary. I think the police in the US (not all) make it a sport to over react. A lot of people in the US over react. Here that is not really a thing. People who over react be requested to stop being stupid and stop acting like a retard (no offence) and act normal. If we here a school shooting on the news, we could start a bet that it will be on the US. We’re like: Oh god, it has happened AGAIN. Will they ever learn? We’re not surprised at all. We’re more surprised if a project finishes on time here. That’s quite sad. I don’t believe that people are stupid in the US, they just act like it (again not everyone in the US) and they’re either proud of it or not embarrassed enough to do anything about it.

Don't watch this and think that Dutch cops are pushovers, though. They are highly trained and I've seen them work as a cohesive unit to take down people fighting in the streets. They didn't do it with guns, they did it as a team. It was amazing to watch. Amsterdam cops are some of the most trained, because you cannot become an Amsterdam cop right away. They will train you in smaller cities first. This is because Amsterdam, while very peaceful and fun, does have some unpredictability with tourists. So they can't have rookies acting like assholes. They also don't give a fuck if you have any drugs, really. If you have ecstasy, pot, coke, speed...if it's a small amount, they don't care. They would rather focus on bringing down the larger drug criminals rather than the people who just do it recreationally. They USED to have places set up around the city where you could get your drugs tested, no questions asked, to make sure that they were safe, but as the Netherlands has gotten progressively more conservative, this has stopped and that's a shame.

I was in the Netherlands, riding the night bus back to my hotel outside the center, and this group of British girls were all drunk (or whatever) out of their minds. The one girl was going to throw up. The bus driver pulled over and helped her off the bus to throw up while her friend held her hair. Then he helped them back on and made sure they got off at their stop OK. He didn’t kick them off the bus - he helped them out and made sure they were safe. In the US the police probably would have arrested the girls or something. The bus driver would have thrown them off the bus in all likelihood, stranding them on the side of the road in the middle of the night to get raped or god knows what. Oh wait - there is no night bus in the US - they would probably have driven home drunk and killed someone. The social infrastructure in the Netherlands is designed to reduce harm and keep people safe - not punish and repress. It is a better system. It is sad we will never have it in the US.

Its a kind of ''crime'' that cops over here wont spend to much energy in to stop people from doing it. they just give you a warning and move on. If someone is actually drunk and still drinks beer they will take action by taking it away from him and give you a fine. Sometimes they even give the person a ride back to their home/hotel or in worse cases just one night at a prison cell. Such a person will be allowed to go free the next morning.

To put the difference concerning cops between the US and Europe into context: In Europe we consider police to be part of society and our actual friend and helper in need. Police officers being just normal citizens who dedicate their time to keeping everyone else safe and following the rules. In the US police is "THE LAW" and quite often acting like Judge Dredd. They have an adversarial or at least "feeling superior" relationship with everyone they come about. To give an anecdote about the differences: - Got into a car crash without injured people in Europe at 20. We called the police just to have an independent party take the accident report. They arrived shortly after (1 car, no fuss, saying "sorry that it took so long, but we were at another call"), asked if everybody was ok, asked us if we already filled out an accident report, or if we need one, looked at the accident, signed the accident report and offered one of us a ride home. (as the car had to be towed) - Got into a car crash without injured people in the US at age 17. We called the police just to have an independent party take the accident report. They arrived with 4 cars with sirens blaring but surprisingly late, boxing us in, jumped out of their cars, started ordering us around, asked all of us for ID and then drew a gun on me (because I had the audacity to turn my back on them, to ask a friend of mine, with whom I was staying, for his address), never said sorry for drawing a gun on me, and after seeing that nobody was hurt (which we told them over the phone before) left without taking the accident report, while we had to wait on the side of the road for a ride home.

The biggest difference is how the Dutch cops are trained compared to the US it's police force. The dutch police is much more than a enforcer of law. The police officers are social workers, trustee(s), problem solvers, law enforcers. They maintain peace and safety within society. They understand the importance of using a human and kind approach to resolve issues. Sadly the US cops are trained to maintain and enforce the law, even somewhat encouraged to approach in a hostile, non-humanizing way. More or less like a invading military force on foreign enemy soil. How can you expect people to trust or feel comfortable when approached in such a way?

The ultracapitalism leads to literally murderous competition on the corner. That's a climate that a Dutch cop couldn't do his job in either. When your life is actually in danger, you will act accordingly. Besides, Dutch cops in Amsterdam are largely corrupt. A friend of mine was essentially fired from the police force in the bad Amsterdam neighbourhood for NOT taking bribes. It's rotten to the core. Netherlands is a global player in the XTC business. That's because the law is turning a blind eye. That will keep the peace. There's tolerant policies, and then there's corruption. I guess if you value human live above all, these things are still preferable over the state America is in.

Well, people here are not allowed to have firearms. So cops don't have many reasons to be afraid for their own lives when they arrest someone. In America if you make a wrong move cops will quickly reach for their weapons. (which i kinda understand to be honest) I think that a salutation for the USA is two sided. The police need do things differently, and citizens (not just black people) have to return their firearms. Only one problem is that many Americans consider the freedom of carry a gun a freedom that should never be taken away from them. If i got my facts right it already went that direction during the colonial era. In the time of Indians and bandits people had to be able to protect themselves, and now it's stuck in the system.
@Jatochnietdan
@Jatochnietdan 4 года назад
It 100% depends on who you interact with. There are PLENTY of Dutch police who are complete assholes and want to abuse their power, especially when they think you are a foreigner. One time I was cycling home from work and I came to a bike crossing, just as I went through the bike crossing, the light went from green to orange and about halfway through the intersection it went to red. Two police in a van happened to be waiting at the intersection, right at the intersection, they didn't stop to wait at the traffic lights for cars they actually pulled all the way up to the crossing and sat there, looking at the *bike light* to tell them when to go. So as soon as it went red, he floored it and almost hit me. He then starts yelling out the window at me to be careful and not cross when it's red. I explained that when I started crossing, it was green, just about going orange as I went through it and not going red until I was well into the crossing. He then got very irritated and said that if I keep talking to him he will arrest me and started swearing at me. I was very tempted to continue arguing but I decided better to avoid escalating and I left. The cop was at 100 the entire time pretty much, he was super hyped up and aggressive from the start. I was absolutely in the right in this situation and the cop was wrong from the start as he was not even in the correct area for a car and was not going based on when his car traffic light went green, but rather when the bike light went red, which is not the precise moment that the car light goes green, there is always a delay. You can also look up videos of black protesters in Rotterdam who were protesting "Zwarte Piet" (a tradition of black facing and putting huge red lipstick on) in celebration of what the Dutch refer to as a Christmas-like celebration, but actually "Zwarte Piet" original source is from slave ships since NL was a massive slave trader and the "Piets" are black helpers of a fat white guy "sinterklass" and they do all of the work, delivering presents etc. At these protests, police rounded up the mostly black protestors into a van, beating them with batons if they didn't comply. There is very graphic footage of this and this is pretty standard practice almost every year. There were also a significant number of police arrested in NL for being involved in organised crime. Also, this video paints a very quaint picture of NL, not all of NL is so calm. In Amsterdam there are plenty of murders and shootings. When I lived in the ghetto of Amsterdam, a decapitated body was found in a van near my home. Last year someone also fired a rocket launcher at a building. Also, gangs have been going around exploding ATMs, so now a lot of banks have opted to remove most public ATMs as it is simply too much hassle as they are so targeted. When I lived in Rotterdam in a nice area, hearing shootings was pretty standard. Hearing someone shooting in Rotterdam multiple times a year is standard stuff. There was a gang shootout in a hotel lobby while I lived there, someone was shot in the small playground behind my apartment, there was a shooting on the street next to my apartment, there was a girl raped in plain sight in the morning in public when it was bright, right next to a bunch of apartments with nobody noticing, lots of SWAT raids on houses, police chased and shot some guy in the street in the middle of the day, there was a shooting in Utrecht's tram which killed 3 people, countless more examples in just a 2 year period. You have to remember that it can seem quaint and quiet when you don't hear all the news from here, all of our news is in Dutch and it doesn't really garner worldwide attention like English news does, as a lot of people understand English and really only people who live here understand Dutch it isolates all of these events so that only we are aware of them. Not saying that the country isn't pretty safe but I think this definitely paints it as an ideal paradise of barely any crime at all when it simply isn't the case. If you do some Googling on the Dutch news you will find plenty of stuff that happens here too. Plenty of gang wars, organised crime, bad policing etc.

i spent a few weeks in Switzerland. never heard any cop sirens. saw a cop play jump rope with some a bunch of little girls and their moms, saw a cop walk some cows off the road while the drivers were just chilling in their cars and waiting for the road to clear, saw another cop trying to teach a teenager how to properly use a stick shift because he kept stalling (right outside my hotel in lucerne), saw some cops talk philosophy with a bunch of old guys while taking a stole up a mountain (in weggis). one cop stopped me because i was going a tad too fast (10km/h over the limit) once he found out i was visiting, without me even asking he told me where the best views are then let me go. that's about it.

Actually, here in Switzerland we have a pretty high number of guns and very low gun violence. The trick is that we do check who buys a gun (I could buy one tomorrow if I wanted, but the local authorities would quickly check if I'm a threat to others and if I've caused troubles in the past before I receive the permission to buy it) and we have a great welfare programs that ensures that nobody is put in a situation in which they feel the need to steal. In Switzerland, as a swiss citizen, you literally cannot be homeless unless you choose to be. As soon as you go to the government (the "commune") where you live and ask with a simple "please", you've got a roof, food, clothes and even some money for your car in some cases (the trick is: the money is lent to you, not given, so if you ever earn more than a certain threshold, you have to pay it back). Guns don't create violence, deregulation and poverty does. ps: giving someone a job that doesn't provide a living wage is not a good way to fight poverty. Basically free public education (including college) and investment in science as well as globalism has proven way more effective for us.

I get the idea that gun violence is just a symptom of what's actually going on in the US. Main problem (I Think) is crappy healthcare and crappy education. Get your people educated and healthy and they'll feel a lot less inclined to kill each other. Gun control will help, but it's a band-aid compared to an actual cure.

You might die of culture shock! I have spent a lot of time in both the Netherlands and The USA... oh boy are they different. In one the talk all the time about their freedom in the other they know what freedom means. To understand the Dutch you have to understand what it means to be occupied by the Nazis... to be flooded... and to work together to literally build your Country from nothing. The Dutch have an attitude I love... when the EU brings in regulations they smile and nod in agreement and then shrug and carry on... it's just our way... we don't have curtains because we have nothing to hide, nothing to be ashamed of. I asked why the house prices were so high... well we have no crime here, none at all... wow imagine that, what would you pay to live there?

Our country isn't perfect, but I am very fortunate to have been born here, and I can honestly say it's a very good country to live in, with sound social structures and in general a government, local, regional and national, that works to improve the country. There might be exeptions to that "rule" in the eyes of one or another of course, as you can never do "the best" in everyone's eyes, but overall we have it good here.

especially if it's a victimless "crime" now cause you get rid of the violence that can result from illegal weed trafficking. Bottom line is this: People are going to smoke it. They will find a way to grow it or they will find someone who knows someone who knows someone who does. Just make it legal, sell it under government regulations, everyone profits. There is literally no debate there if you don't invent some bs about it. Example A: Amsterdam Example B: Colorado There are not enough letters but you get my point

It isn't really about making it legal. It is about opporunity's, here in the Netherlands we got a fine social wellfare system that works out for everybody. When I was a student I could get a study loan and if I finished in 4y, i diddn't had to pay anything back! Same with the healthcare system, when my mom got cancer she got from the goverment extra money so we could stay in our house and my mom could focus on getting better.. Yes, I earn arround 32k a year and pay 21,5% tax on that. But, there is no reason for us to get in crime.. Remember 99.9% of the criminals diddn't start out becauste they like the thrill of it! Ofcourse we got some criminals, drugsgangs, illigal prostitution and junkies. But that amount is sooo small! And often it has to do with their mental conditions.. Psycopaths, bordeliner personality u name it..

Years ago, I rented a small room (for 300euros p.m, 8sq.m) in a house of an old hippie woman in Amsterdam. One night after being partying in the city with my brother and friends, I came home drunk at 05.00 in the morning (thinking I was home alone), after letting myself falling down on the couch closing my eyes, I heard noises infront of the house. So I started listening to the noise with my eyes closed and figured out it were footsteps of multiple people, stopping at my front door... (so it got my attention) then all over suddenly my front door went open... (my eyes went wide open and I felt my heart pumping in my neck) I walked to the door of my room (the room was at the hall way at the front door) and put my ear on the door. I heard clearly 4 or more people walking trought my house!! And talking in a foreign language I did not understand. So yes I got scared😂 I thought while being drunk WHO THE FUCK IS IN MY HOUSE!! so I grabbed a knife in case to defend myself and in my other hand I called my brother asking for help and what to do. Eventually I called the police, within 4 minutes.. 5 police cars in front of my house, 8 cops with pulled guns and flashlights rushed trought the front door going inside while yelling: POLITIEE, POLITIEE, POLITIE!! so i walked with the police, inside the living room to see who they were holding onder shot and see 4 foreign students on the ground held by the police 😂 they were explaining that the hippie woman rented a room for them, for a couple days, but that woman never communicated that with me, so I didn't know anything about it🙄... I apologized to the cops for the false alarm but they were so chill and just said (in Dutch): no problem my friend, we are happy you've called. Take a goodnight rest and goodbye 🤠 Yeah I never forget that, and I think the students will also never forget it 😂

I once was sitting at the canal, smoking, and a homeless guy (who indeed smelled really bad) came to ask if he got hit the joint a few times. About 18 hrs later a cop caught me taking a sly piss down an alley at abot 3 in the morning as I wandered about trying to find home. The guy did not ticket or arrest me, he asked about landmarks etc that could identify my place then took me there on the back of his moped. When I have tried to tell some folk (esp americans) this story they do not believe me. I don't blame them ,you have to go there to appreciate just how special this place is. The word they mention in the bit is "gedoogbeleid" which kind of translates to "tolerant-policy" Both Belgium and the Netherlands have one for weed, but the Belgian one only goes as far to let people go when they have a small personal amount on them. (used to be below 3g). The Dutch one also allowes stores to sell it, but they haven't legalised industrial growing, meaning the shops usually get their stuff from illegal plantations. Meaning a lot of weed on the borders of the Netherlands, come from illegal Belgian plantations. Meaning a lot of Belgian stoners cross the border to buy Belgian weed and smuggle it back to Belgium. It's far from perfect.
