As a South Carolina Highway patrolman there are no "quotas" It just looks bad when you never write any. Theres some points where superiors will tell us be stricter with ticket writing.
With half the people on the road breaking 15 traffic laws for every mile they drive, it's just a question of how many violations you have time to write.
I had a friend who is in law enforcement over 30 years he always told me there were quotas he started his law enforcement career in 1976 in Southern Idaho retired from the Redmond Washington Police Department was a righteous dude unfortunately 2 years ago at the age of 71 died of a massive heart attack I miss my cop buddy mr. Well, stop focusing on speed traps and speed radar detection and focus instead on people tail-gating and weaving in and out of traffic while cutting people off and forcing them to slow down... A lot of cops' stopping for going a few miles over the speed limit while driving well and safely is mindless and a waste of taxpayer money in terms of their salary...
Of course the police will not admit to quotas. They adamantly deny quotas exist but everybody knows they do. Where I live, it's obvious plus one trooper got caught bragging about it.
Maybe you WERE like everyone else when you first got hired on as a Trooper, but now you're definitely NOT like everyone else. Being a cop has its toll. Thanks for your dedication and hard work and don't forget to take care of yourself.
He gave someone a ticket for not wearing a seat belt, and in the next shot he was putting it on while already on the road... even though you supposed to have it on before you start moving.
he was chasing someone. Sometimes you have to hit the gas before putting your seat belt on in order to catch up with someone speeding. You may not like it, but it happens.
Lead by example. Don't ticket someone for the same law you just broke or are about to break. Does not matter if it is a Police emergency, they are required to where their seat belt. before moving their vehicle.
Chase Curl he should be ticketed for it. Can’t move the vehicle until it’s on or is normal people will get ticketed for it. All it takes is him pulling into the road without it on and he could be hit. No excuse. If we can’t they can’t.
What gets me is that there are really good, safe drivers who will go 20-30 mph over the limit on a wide-open, straight expressway with very little traffic -- drivers who never tailgate, never weave in and out of traffic, never cut anybody off -- but they'll get pulled over just for doing 20 over. Then there are tons of people not going 15 or 20 over but who tailgate inches off bumpers, cut other cars and trucks off routinely with very nearly disastrous potential implications, etc., and they never seem to get pulled over. That's the single biggest beef that I have with police in cars on highways. The really dangerous drivers are the ones driving dangerously, not necessarily the speeders; going 20 mph over the limit is not always done dangerously.

Do you really think that people designing highways have a high IQ? There are problems with roadway designs and laws everywhere. I used the word "arbitrary"; think about that a little... And my initial point that you clearly missed is that focusing on speed by good drivers (yes, I did say "good") is not something that should be done by idiot cops who ignore tailgating -- which is arguably much much worse than speeding, per se.
I haven't met any yet. They ALL have bad attitudes, I probably would too if I was a crook with a badge, how do the WSP live with themselves, their lives must completely suck.

On camera they never say there is a quota but I've talked to cops that come through the gas station I work at and they've mentioned it to me many times...
They are not exempt from the law. They do what they have to do to get people speeding, running red lights, etc. That doesn't make them exempt from the law. And also, they go that fast so they can catch up to the speeder quicker.
5 over most cops just leave you alone. Some, not all, follow the "5 your fine, 9 your mine." phrase. Also if traffic isn't that bad they won't hit the lights till behind the car, but if it's bad enough they would hit the lights.

The cop was way back there, he must of went over 80 to catch up with me the way he did. I think he would cause more of a safety risk then I was doing a measly 5 mph and moving along with traffic. He was a super nice cop so I didnt question why he was in such a hurry LOL

Tanner Corder actually, the Washington State Patrol only gets 5% of the ticket revenue back to the agency. And that 5% goes directly to the Crime Lab. The other 95% of the revenue goes to county courts and the surrounding cities.
Has a good bit of advice when you get pulled over by the police and he says that he clocked you at a certain speed. If you get the ticket and you want to fight it when you go to court you have the right to ask the officer questions. The two questions you only want to ask was that gun or equipment that you used calibrated. If he says or she says yes ask to see the certificate of calibration. If he or she does not have the certificate of calibration that's when you turn towards the judge and you ask the judge to dismiss the ticket that you believe that equipment on that date and time was malfunctioning because you weren't going as fast as the officer said you were.

He’s trying to get people to realize the broader issues that he tackles on a day to day basis. It’s not simply just writing tickets but trying to keep the roads safe for everyone and being on his toes in case of any emergency.

Yes there are quotas.. Years ago, I had a customer of mine that was a WSP dispatcher, yes they have quotas. The dispatcher said they will try to tell you they dont but they do.. So not only are they crooks but liars too?
More like a way of gaging a Troopers performance against his or her peers. If one Trooper isn't citing as many as others are in his district are there might be an issue that needs to be looked at.

Well ppl don't speed and you won't have to worry about being pulled over for speeding. This is the officer job you can't hate him for that.Just one thing that boggles me these state police be flying down the interstate talking on the phone, tailgating, in the left lane.But pull u over for the same thing. Washington police have saved my life several times before & always were respectful of everyone's rights when people on both sides were protesting in my city. They didn't get involved and just stood by in case anything got violent which it never did. They never give me or anyone else I've seen trouble for open carrying, always minding their business when exercising our rights. I've had dozens of encounters with them and they are really calm. Idk if that's just my personal experience or if any other WA natives have noticed that. Just an observation. I'm grateful for these cops in WA though.
My grandpa was going down the interstate and he had a bad wreck and it was back when it was legal to not wear a seatbelt but if he was wearing a seatbelt he wouldve been dead

I ran 90mph back then in Kentucky showing off. I left the crowd far behind me and some state trooper sitting hiding on inner state shot me up close with radar afterwards I slammed on them brakes the trooper looked at me hard but never moved. That’s why Rocky Mountain radar is the best. You can’t catch what you can’t see.

Codes that you kindly refer to as 'law' are not law at all or it would be called law, but its not. Dont forget, there are laws everywhere all over the world, just because something is called law, doesnt mean it applies to you. CODES are powerless leglislative rules that recieve power after consent. Signing a 'DRIVER' license is a trick to consent. Once you sign that 'DRIVER' license, for you, all codes are now law.

I was worrying about myself until "pulled over in bremerton" happened and I was arrested for not obeying fast enough, no crime, no probable cause, no breach of the peace, case was dismissed, meaning the courts have no case of even the slightest which confirms I was thrown in jail for absolutely nothing.. I filed a tort claim for $20k will see how it goes..
Jake Voss Yes. Driving is always dangerous, at any speed. Traffic laws in general and speed limits in particular are a trade-off our society makes between mobility and safety. The authorized, qualified experts set the speed limits as the standard for relatively safe driving that applies on each road in their jurisdiction. It is our responsibility as civilian drivers to abide by the standards they set.
@@jbm71 How much do you trust the "authorized, qualified experts"? Clearly more than me, but I don't think it's debatable that they are not prefect. Have you ever seen the speed limit changed on a road that you have driven? Why are there different speed limits from state to state on roads with nearly identical conditions? And even these experts disagree on whether to set highway and non-residential road speed limits based on the 85th percentile of the natural speed of traffic or totally arbitrarily. I drive based on the idea that the spirit of laws related to speed limits is to drive at a "reasonable and prudent speed for conditions" which means speed limits are least flexible on residential streets and most flexible on highways with few cars in sight. I'll take the occasional speeding ticket if I come across an officer who disagrees.
Have you ever done a ride along? They do a crap ton. When I've went, we responded to robbery calls, stolen vehicles, homicides, crashes, domestic violence calls, missing children, commercial vehicle inspections, etc, etc
ok umm let's see, they provide Law Enforcement services to unincorporated areas of the counties they're assigned, umm what else, oh they provide executive security to the governor of Washington State, umm what else, a whole variety list of things that State Troopers do, i don't know about you but i take Trooper work over dealing with jackasses in the city on domestics and fights anyday, but hey that's just me
I got my first speeding ticket in over 25 years. Was just cruising along flow of traffic, apparently everyone was speeding. The cop was very nice and respectful and although he wrote me a ticket the law is the law. I will now be more mindful of my driving. No big deal
Actually if you were going the flow of traffic, you wernt breaking the law. The law states you should go the flow of traffic not necessarily the posted limit.
No there’s no quota but how does a department measure the amount of work your doing for promotion? Oh yea the amount of tickets you write and revenue you bring the state.
55 mph speed limits on three lanes highways are a crime themselves. Literally no one goes 55 mph, everyone is going 60-70. Its a joke to take advantage of people going the real speed limit. Pull over the people doing 85 and passing in the right lane.
Washington State Police don't need you to violate the law to get stopped or receive a violation. I lived there and their reputation for stopping you for no reason and especially harassing bikers is well known. i couldn't take my bike out on the interstate without being stopped 50% of the time.

Personally I think it should be our choice to wear a seatbelt. Now when it involves children then the parents should be held accountable but if you're over 18 it should be your personal choice. Also Washington state has some of the slowest speed limits in the country.
You have death wish? Air bags won't deploy if their not buckled. WA state speed limits are in keeping with neighboring states, even CA has a 65 mph limit.

The crazy thing is..most of these activities could be automated. Problem stop signs could be monitored by cameras. Speed cameras could be installed...etc. Thus allowing troopers to handle major issues, aggressive driving..etcetera.

Those same companies have been known to alter stop light times and yellow light times in their favor to get more revenue. Corruption has to be stopped before we can deploy these systems nationwide.
+Walter crunch It's because they skim that there's corruption. Instead they should get a flat rate based on the number of deployed units. This flat rate is charged regardless of generated revenue. The city would then be in charge of the settings of the units and it could be voted on by the city council. Letting these companies skim off the top of ticket revenue encourages the corruption. There are very little checks and balances and very little incentive for the police to stop them as they too get increased revenue.
Alway felt 8 over was a guaranteed citation. The speed limit is what is posted, not 10 or 15 MPH over that. Think more folks need to get the opportunity to assist in picking up dead bodies after fatal vehicle accidents. Too many folks have no respect for others or respect for the laws of our country.
Virginia State Police have stricter speed enforcement rules I believe. Don't come blowing through Virginia like you own my state. Respect the speed and heed wh signs you read.
what is being done about habutual speeders and agressive drivers in clark county. if i had ticketing authority i could easily write 50 plus tickets a day for unsafe drivers

The funny this is and it's not really funny is that the officer stated she was going 70 mph when at the same time that officer pulled out in front of oncoming traffic and was running every bit of 80 or faster to catch her. Now my thing is who was the more dangerous person in this video the cop or the other driver? So a cop see's somebody running 5 maybe 10 miles per hour faster doesn't make it ok for the officer to run that fast to catch up with the other driver. And because of the rate of speed the officer was running and how quick he got up to that speed by law is reckless operation. I always hear Judges say to wrongs don't make a right. Well, what do you call this? And when that officer pulled out in front of that oncoming traffic if he would have caused a wreck I bet you he would have said it was the speeder's fault since he was pursuing her for the actual speeding. I think in this situation the cop was very reckless and very unsafe.

I was going to be a WSP officer years ago just so I could speed, but then I found out they had quotas and realized no way in hell I would pull that crap on people..
