Ridout Road parliament debate: MPs raise questions on conflict of interest, code of conduct

Some people are so privileged that they are totally unaware by their privileges.

The fact is that there is a distinct difference between how Shan and Vivian handled their affairs. Shan used his own DS, while Vivian went via an agent. While Shan and SM can explain the considerations, the fact remains he utilised a senior civil servant for personal matters. This cannot be disputed, and it’s unfortunate that this is where the impression of Shan’s code of conduct is at best very questionable. I am a fair minded person…

MPs must continue to raise questions and not let the PAP government brush this issue under the rug. The truth will prevail and KS shall get to clear his name after, if he's innocent. As of now, he's "guilty until proven innocent". It is his obligation to proof his innocence beyond a reasonable doubt.

I think SLA need IRAS to help value the land rent. You rent 14,000sqm (not sqft) of space for $2000, and in actual fact that he is $500 more than his neighbor. And you keep arguing using GFA for adjustment. Even JTC factory pay base land rent. And right in 2021, how is it and why was his rental was not varied? Why wasn't URA Rental index to adjust for it? This is just the tip of the iceberg, I have a lot of questions as to how he rented that 14,000sqm. The Holland Tower next door just 2000sqm.

Looks like Singapore need more Pritam, Jamus and a stronger opposition. I wouldn't be surprised to see this in other SEA countries but certainly not in Singapore, perhaps I should start to lower my expectations.

Whatever the facts or whatever they said doesn't matter my mind is already made up and its crystal clear to me that Conflict of interest and somewhat abuse of power is evident in this case. Very disappointed with the two ministers who bring the PAP down. The only way to solve this issue fast and rebuild PAP's reputation would be the two ministers resign with immediate effect.

Why both party failed to debate the real issues. Our ministers have realised he might be asset-rich, cash-poor, where he had committed too much cash into estate asset before a mid-career change to join public service. Hence, one have to ask if they can continue to maintain their current income level in order for the cost of owing real estate. I worried for the families that commit millions to buy long term leasehold property. The time come when they need to retire and liquid the assert would they be able to so easily? Even our own minister are facing the same set of challenges.

The way this is handled simply tells you there's no democracy in this country. The way the debate was conducted in Singapore, it simply shows you the ruling party is privileged.

The median rent of HDB 5-rm flat is around S$3000 per month. S$26500/S$3000 = 8.8 times only S$19000/S$3000 = 6.3 times only Go and do this comparison using the median rent of mass market 3-Bedroom private condos lah. Ha ha ha!

The ministerial code of conduct was supposed to ensure it does not happen but then it does not specify all possible scenario of HOW minister should or should not behave. In Chinese saying and I am sure Teo CH knows this, this 2 ministers was just 'chow Kuan' and instead of selling their house,buy another no smaller house use THEIR OWN MONEY TO RENOVATE IT amd live in it But instead they saw an the opportunity to rent 'cheap' , get preferential treatment due to their position to get SLA to refurbish the houses and use STATE RESOURCES TO RENOVATE the rented houses for their occupancy.
