PG’s Chris Kies stopped down to Nashville’s Ascend Amphitheater before Mutemath’s hometown opening set with Twenty One Pilots and talked with the band’s two multi-instrumentalists Roy Mitchell-Cárdenas (above) and Todd Gummerman who showed off their JHS-loaded pedalboards. Plus, Roy details two interesting instruments while Todd explains how the guitar he plays has been in the band longer than him.
Roy Mitchell-Cárdenas bounces between guitar and bass during Mutemath sets. Here is his main guitar-a Sublime Guitar Company Chieftain. The guitar itself is stock, but it did originally come with a Pelham blue finish (think Dave Grohl’s Trini Lopez model), but he wanted to give the instrument a different identity. Roy used artwork from Jean-Michel Basquiat to cover the top. Only one upgrade has been made: The headstock was repaired by a friend with super glue after the guitar fell off a stand.
Guitarist/keyboardist Todd Gummerman doesn’t have a choice when it comes to his No. 1 instrument because the band has been recording and touring with this 1967 Silvertone 1429 since the early 2000s.

Am I the only one who watches as many of these as I can just to see different effects pedal chains and amps? I mean I only of liked 2 or 3 of the bands I've ever seen on these but I still love watching the videos even if I don't know who the band is and will never listen to them.

I really wish more artists would actually demo their gear with these, like Nels Cline and Paul Gilbert did. That is so helpful.

To be fair, both those guys you mentioned are gregarious personalities and passionate about their craft. You compare these to the rig rundowns handled by a rugged guitar tech, and it's night and day. I know PG probably likes having regular, consistent / low-effort content, but they should really start requiring the artist to be on hand and to give a cheeky demonstration or two of their tones.

We're definitely not looking to gather low-effort content with these Rig Rundown shoots by not allowing artists to play or demo their gear. We love it! We encourage it! However, there are so many things that are happening behind the scenes that often curtail any noise being made (other bands soundchecking, union/noise ordinances, doors open/crowd entering, unsure/uneasy artists who shy away from plunky-plunky demos). Trust us, we feel the best RRs are when we get the guitarist and they fire up their rigs. 100%.

Gerson Bedoya Lozano Generally, the bass can go through a DI box or a preamp and routed directly into the mixer. It provides some headroom for a live mix.

Yeah, Mutemath opened for 21 Pilots (drummer soundchecking) and as you can imagine on any national tour, the headliners don't give two squats about the opening band or what they're doing. At least we got the RR! Thanks for watching.

Me neither. Just checked out a YT video. I absolutely cannot be more disappointed with the way music is heading these days. Why is there a rig rundown with this? I don't even hear a single live instrument in this band. All fake computer pop.

+Duke Ukulele there's a few problems and it's a pitty because they make some good pedals Firstly they stole one of devi evers (?) fuzz designs, sold it as an original (for way more money) and then tried to get her dropped from her distributor as a result they are also linked to a fundementalist Christian organisation (nothing wrong with being Christian mind) that is involved in gay conversation therapy and other horrible pursuits Add on to that the fact that most of their pedals are clones sold at a massive mark up they're just not nice people there probably the only boutique pedal builder that are dodgy as well almost everyone else are decent

Right so I've read up on this now, and I've formed and opinion. My problem with JHS lies on the faith side of the argument, though Josh has never stated that his company is explicitly "Christian", which would defend them from allegations of breaking there faith, through cloning, etc, it should go embedded in his morals, however most of the clones he makes are either out of production, or modified upon, and so I see that as acceptable; he even took his klone out of production when Klon released the KTR. business: its tricky, but she herself is no princess. She's done a lot of dodgy stuff, especially concerning kickstarter money. I would say however that the pedals are somewhat different, and Josh only stated that it was a DE style pedal. Technically its still all legal, just not quite moral.
