I’ve been working on a music video, which will be made entirely in Blender Grease Pencil.
In this video, I demonstrate one of the character’s rigs, animating a walk cycle, playing with lighting, and also compositing a test scene. My intention is to give semi-regular updates on how this project is progressing.
Also, after I finish this project, I will be putting out a tutorial designed for complete beginners to Blender and Grease Pencil, stepping through the stages of how to make this rigged Grease Pencil character. So please subscribe if you don't want to miss that. :)
When the final video is released, I’ll post a link here:
Chapters
00:00 Intro
00:50 Rig Demonstration
02:13 Walk Cycle Workflow
02:40 8 Stages of a Walk Cycle
03:40 Blocking Out the Walk Cycle
05:17 Spline Animation
06:05 Overlapping Action
07:40 NLA Editor, Layering Animation
09:22 Final Walk Cycle
09:30 3D Lighting
10:35 Compositing
12:13 Final Scene, and Goodbye

I love this! Having all these steps explained in more details would be gold! I would especially be interested how you keep order in the whole project. Is every scene in a separate file? How do you manage assets, including materials. Is it easy to change the color of the shirt so every scene would reflect that? Or a lens distortion effect for all the scenes. So many questions! Looking forward your following content.
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 3 года назад
Hi Villiam, I'm sorry for the late reply. I'm so glad to see some interest in this area, unfortunately, I'm no expert and I know that I'm doing many things incorrectly. To answer some of your questions, yes, every scene is in a separate file. This keeps the performance organisation of the scenes easy to manage. With that said, I know that there is some scene functionality within a single file, however, I'm more comfortable with working with several files, and then editing them together after rendering. Regarding assets that are used between scenes, like materials and Riggs, I know that it's possible to instance these assets in a way that they are consistent between all files, however, I'm unfamiliar with these tools, and as this is my first large project and the learning curve is already very steep, I chose to avoid this. I hope that this answers your questions, feel free to ask if you have any more.

I would definitely love to see more of this. And I know some artists that aren’t animators looking to push their skills in such a way. A course or series of tutorials in this could be very useful as the only substantial source for grease pencil rigging is only Level Pixel Level, apart from your channel of course. Your insights and advices in using the compositor and setting up the rig as well as the 3D space in an economic way for your computer would be greatly appreciated.

Lovely work! I think his right foot looks kinda wonky when in motion though. It works for standing, but it looks oddly twisted when moving. Not entirely sure if there is an easy way to fix that. Maybe you just need to provide some foot rotation like you already do for the head...

I'm interested in seeing if we can replicate the ways ToonBoom and Adobe Animate create character rigs for production work. If that's possible in Blender, that would be a huge boon.
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 3 года назад
Hi, Cyan. I totally agree. This is why I'm making this video. So far I've found that it is capable of anything than Toon Boom or animate can do, however right now the tools are a little under developed, and there are some inefficiencies and problems, but nothing that too big.

@SketchySquirrel

@@SketchySquirrel Or you could attach a blank 3d flat object to each bone (could even be an image plane) BEHIND the GP just for casting shadow purposes. Either way its all extra steps until GP gives us shadows :-) thanks

Amazing congratulation, but wouldn't be easier to make the character in 3D and then put an animation shader style?
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 3 года назад
Hi, the answer to your question is yes. however while NPR shaders are amazing, they don't achieve the 2D look that Grease Pencil does. By creating a 2D character emulating 3D, it created a totally different look than the other way around. I'm glad that you liked it. :)

Incredible work! Waiting for the tutorial series or a course published on Udemy, it would be an instant purchase. One question: Do you prefer to animate 2d directly in Blender now than in Moho? What are the advantages and disadvantages in your opinion?
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 3 года назад
Thanks Wesley! I actually prefer to animate in Blender - the rigging might take a little longer (with less rigging tools) but you have a lot more flexibility when animating (and lots of extra environmental tools and lighting etc). It will be interesting to see how GP will be developed in the near future.

Hei just want to know ..... >:0 how do you make the grease pencil has a cast shadow(i can't find any tutorial explaining those)
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 2 года назад
Hi there. Thanks for asking. To be honest, by default, Grease Pencil doesn't support this. I was experimenting with different ways of doing this. In this video, I rendered the character walking as an image sequence, with a transparent background, then reimported it with the import images as planes. Thos can the be placed just behind the Grease Pencil. Thos would then cast the shadow. The down side to this method you can't change the animation, as the shadow won't update. Also, because of the parallax effect, it's difficult to hide the plane behind the Grease Pencil. In fact in this video, you can see the double up by the feet. Anyways. I hope that this explanation was helpful. :)
@ZipDraw
@ZipDraw 3 года назад
i thought that grease pencil objects didn't cast shadows from lights?
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 3 года назад
Hi Zip, Technically they don't, however I managed to cheat it using an image sequence and the import images as planes addon. I've still got some issues to work out, and it means that once you've set up the shadows you can't change the animation, but It nice to have a work around. :)
