This video covers how to rig a 2D cutout character using Blender, and Grease Pencil.
This tutorial is aimed at people with experience with Blender and Grease Pencil. It would also be helpful if you have some experience with Rigging as well, though I have tried my best to make it accessible to those who do not.
I hope you enjoy :)

This is so helpful thank you very much but I have a question and it would be lovely if you could answer. Do we need to have our character in a 3/4 view to rig and animate it or does a front view work as well? So if I have my character in a front view and I do this whole process of rigging would I be able to animate it walking to the side as well or a 3/4 would be better for a 2d character

Hi there. This is something that i've only learnt about recently, and it's pretty cool. It's all layed out in this video, by Łukasz Rusinek : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z3zRJ6904i0.html Essentially, instead of attaching shapes to the various bones using Vertex Groups, you can set the parent of an entire grease pencil layer within a group to a particular bone. Now what ever you draw on that layer will be parented, and frame by frame becomes much easier. I hope this helps.

Would this method be suitable for rigging characters from comics? I plan to make an animation in which a comic book character moves their hand and head in a slight way, but I'm worried it would be difficult or impossible if it isn't something I'm making myself... Hi Ki, thank you for your encouraging comment. I understand why you would want a tutorial that shows the entire process from start to finish, and when making youtube tutorials, it can be difficult to figure out how much should be explained, as everyone is at a different point in their Blender knowledge. Currently, I don't have any plans to make a new version of this tutorial, as the topic is aimed at intermediate to advanced Blender users. As you can imagine, overly explaining every step, in minute detail would become boring for a lot the target audience. When I was learning and trying to follow a tutorial a little beyond my level, I found searching online for further explaination usually helped bridge the gap. If that doesn't work, feel free to leave a specific comment, and I will do my best to explain the process. Thanks again for the comment.

@SketchySquirrel

Hi, thanks, yes, you can right click the property that you want to control the driver, e.g the bones X location, and then from the drop down member, select 'copy as new driver' then paste that driver where you want. For example, you can paste it to the Y location of another bone, by right clicking the Y location property of that bone, and select 'paste driver'. Let me know if you have any more questions, :D

question: does using relation -parent(armature)-- Bone for a certain grease pencil layer be the solution for using grease pencil instead of vertex groups?- maybe this will save time in reparenting each frame to the armature when using time-offset
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel Год назад
Hi there, so sorry for the long delay in response. Attaching the entire layer to a bone could work really well. I find it's better practice to use vertex groups, as it allows for more flexibility, but there are plenty of senarios inwhich parenting an entire layer to a bone would work just as well, Łukasz Rusinek (@yosifol) made a great video about how this can be used to make mixing frame by frame and rigged animations easier. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z3zRJ6904i0.html Thanks for the comment, and sorry again for the delay :D

Is there a way to create a bone which can control the Y position of the right hand (in your rig)? I want the specific hand which is back of the torso to come front without rotating the whole rig
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 2 года назад
Hi there, there are a few ways to do this. Assuming that your entire character is in one object, as we did in the tutorial, then you'll have to set the layer ordering not to simply use what layer is in front, but use it's 3D position. Here's a tutorial which shows this off, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uEXZ9wICeWc.html Now you just need to make sure that the deformation bones and control bones are not 'connected' to their parent, and that should allow you to reorder the layers, by moving your bones along the global y axis. I hope this is helpful. Let me know how you get on, and feel free to ask any more questions.

I also tried activating the automatic keyframe but it doesn't work either, do you have any method to solve it? Thank you very much for all you do
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel Год назад
Wow, so great to hear that! regarding the hands, I'm not entirely sure what might be causing the issues you're experiencing, but I have a couple of ideas to try. When you're making the new frame, make sure that your little blue, vertical cursor is on a frame with no key frames, and rather than just modifying the drawing, and relying on the auto key frame, in edit mode press I and insert a new key frame, manually, that should help. If that doesn't work, feel free to send your blender file to me at the email you can find on the about page of my channel, ru-vid.comabout I hope this is helpful.

@@SketchySquirrel Thank you very much for answering, I will keep trying and I will send you the file if you want to see what I have been doing, I still need to animate the character turning full body left and right as I did with the head, with that I had no problems and I already tried it with another file... about my question of recording the animations for the hand poses basically was -for example- you have a character with his hands in fist position but you need that after he moves and changes the position of the arms, the hand now has an open palm pose .... my problem is that I don't know how to capture that change in the animation, since with ("I") you can only animate position, scale, rotation or things like that of a bone or object, but not record a change that has been made from the properties menu of a bone... that is, the bone is still or what I'm interested is not to animate how it moves spatially, but how it modifies the pose.... I hope I have explained myself better XD... by the way my character that I will send you is one with green hair and black clothes, I remain attentive and greetings.

Copy location doesn't do anything for me when i attach it to the control bone. In the "LINKING DEF Bones to MCH/CTRL" section
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 2 года назад
Hi there. I'm not sure what you're facing here, but here are some things to check. Make sure that the constraint is on the correct bone. If you added the constraint manually, then make sure that the target field has the armature, and the bone selected. If the bone with the constraint is already in the same position as the target, then nothing will happen right away, so try moving the target bone around, and see if the DEF bone follows. Hello again @MVLTI I've been thinking about your question over the last few days, and I think I've come up with a solution. :D Essentially, if you add the base shape as an image, then in the shader editor add another image, and use the alpha of the first image to affect the second, you will effectively mask it. I found this video, which does something similar, only instead of an image plane, it's a complete mesh: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1hWxYNcVkwQ.html I hope you find this helpful :D Perhaps I'll make a video about it someday.

@SketchySquirrel

Hi there. The answer to your question is yes. Technically you can rig something along those lines, but be warned, the more features you add to your character, the more difficult it will be to make it intuitive to use, and animate. So make sure that you absolutely NEED a turn around before you start on it. I would recommend making several different rigs, which you can switch between for different angles. Imagine that you are making a 3D game but you want to make a 2D animated portrait for the characters' dialogue, would you use this method or another?
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 10 месяцев назад
That's a really interesting idea. It depends on how you would want it integrated into the game engine. If you want to use image sequences then it doesn't really matter how you make those images, you could hand draw everything, or render out 3D animation, or this method would work really well, all depending on the visual style you're going for. If you want a cutout animation to play live in the engine, with all the bones etc, then it would probably be better to follow a similar work flow, inside the engine itself. I know Godot and Unity have some 2D rigging features that could be useful. I also heard that there is some way to export from Blender to Godot using the COA tools add on, but I've never tried it myself. I hope you find this response helpful :D

Hi there, I think I know what's happening there. You may be choosing the "show names" option under the viewport display, under the object properties, which is a tab that looks like a little orange box. What that's doing is not showing the name of the base bone, but showing the name of the armature object, at the position of the base bone. Instead, if you go to the green little stick figure tab, which is the armature properties, then under the viewport display, then there is also a "Show names" option. I hope this is helpful :D

Hi there. I'm not sure exactly what part of the video you're referring to. It sounds like adding colour to the linework. Essentially this process works in grease pencil by having two types of materials, line materials and fill materials. The process I usually follow is to draw the line work on one layer, then on another layer underneath, I would follow the silhouette of the shape, or "drawing over the outline", using the fill material, to add the colour. There is also a fill tool, which follows this process automatically, though the way I draw line work often leaves gaps, making it easier to create from scratch. I hope that I have answered your question, if not let me know and please add a time stamp indicating which part of the video you are having difficulty with. :D

how is it that when you parent your bones, they're being connected to the base of the bone? while when i do it, it connects to the tip of the bone instead.
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 8 месяцев назад
Hi, sorry for the late reply. I'm not exactly sure what you mean, could you give me a timestamp in the video where this happens? Otherwise I'll take a guess. You are correct that when parenting one bone to another, if you choose the connected option, rather than keep offset, then it will attach to the top of the parent bone. However you may be referring to a point where I am using a copy transform constraint. At first glance it looks like it works the same, but it's very different. As you pointed out, it snaps the bone to the base, rather than the tip, and in pose mode it is impossible to alter it's pose, as it's copying all the transforms of the other bones, and that cannot be overridden manually. I hope this is helpful, if not, feel free to ask me any more questions, or do some research into how use constraints in blender. :)

Do you have access to onion skins when a grease pencil object is rigged?
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel Год назад
Hi there, to answer your question, yes and no. The onion skins only relate to the grease pencil key frames. So if you're using a hybrid method, then the onion skin feature is still helpful, however if you want to use it to track the motion of the rig, then you're better off using the motion paths tool. I hope this is helpful.

When i move the root bone the character is not moving with the root bone as you showed in the begin.
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 11 месяцев назад
Hi there. So this should be a fairly simple problem to fix, essentially the rig will work as a chain of parent and child bones. We need to make sure that every bone if you trace its relations all the way to the top, ends with the root bone. So you should be able to take bones with no parent and parent them to the root. You can do this by entering edit mode, selecting the bones you want to be the children of the root, then while holding shift, select the root bone, and press CTRL+P. Then in the pop-up menu, select keep offset. Then it should work as intended, when in pose mode. Let me know if this is helpful, or if you have any other questions :D Otherwise, you can send me your blender file by email. You can find my address on the about page of my channel. ru-vid.comabout And I'll do my best to solve the problem.

@SketchySquirrel Год назад
Hi there. At that point in the video, there were two bones. THe second bone was parented to the first. So when I duplicated the second bone, it too was parented to the first. So I had to then reparent it to the second bone. I hope this is helpful.
