Please feel free to ask any questions you may have regarding Fitness or Nutrition and I will be happy to try and answer them. Here's where you can ask.. www.labrada.com/asklee
This week Dr. Dan and I are discussing the topic of protein, and the proper amount to consume based on your own body weight.
The RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowance) suggests that a healthy adult male should have 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of lean body weight.
While, some studies have suggested that for an active adult male 1.2 - 1.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body mass is allowable per day based on activity level.
Bodybuilders over the years have highly recommended 1 gram of protein per body pound per day.
To use protein efficiently, it's recommended that the average healthy adult to consume 20-40 grams of protein per meal.
For more training tips, visit our website Labrada.com and subscribe to our RU-vid channel.

Hello Lee, my name's Brian. I sent you a comment on here a few months ago regarding my question on if someone was 160 lbs and they wanted to theoretically gain one more pound of muscle, that they'd have to take in 161 grams and you answered that for me. I just wanted to update you on how iv'e been doing. I've experimented on and off last year with my diet (mind you I have endomorph genetics) ive done zigzagging, I've done high protein high fat no carb, high protein high carb, moderate protein moderate carb, moderate protein high carb etc and I've learned thru messing around with my diet the last 3 years, I FINALLY found a pattern. It's not the carbs that are causing some fat gain, it's actually the excess protein that causes that which I found VERY interesting. Right now I changed my diet up for the final last time and i'm doing what you and dr dan mentioned. I lowered my protein a tad to make it 1 gram per pound bodyweight (160 grams) and i'm taking in 315 grams of carbs a day and i'm actually getting leaner :) for me (not speaking for everyone on here) high carbs moderate protein, low fat is the way I need to diet. It's the complete opposite of what I would logically think. Happy to share that with you Lee

Thanks for bringing all this information together and having Dr. Dan interpret. As Dan said, the body has mechanisms for regulating how much protein is absorbed, and in my case I've been consuming too much. I want to cut back to no more than 1.5g/lb but I believe the regulating mechanisms will hurt my progress if I suddenly cut back from 1.8g/lb on workout days. Should my reduction be gradual?
@Labrada
@Labrada 9 лет назад
neub4321 great question, in our opinion, stepping from 1.8 g/lb to 1.5g/lb can happen all at once. The reason we say this is because you are still within an ample range of protein. If you were asking to change your intake from 1 to .7 per pound (same overall change), then we would have recommended a more gradual transition period. Hope this has helped answer your question, wish you all the best.

Hi Lee, awesome and informative video just a question about the Lean Body MRP if I'm taking 2 servings a day do i need to take an additional Multi Vit or EFA as i know there is already good amount in the product already, also huge fan your an inspiration and a top bloke, Thanks.
@Labrada
@Labrada 9 лет назад
Mark Brooks Thanks for the question and for choosing Labrada Nutrition for your supplements. The MRPs are a great choice, and if you are having 2 a day, you do not need to purchase the EFA Lean Gold. With relation to the mutli vitamin, I personally take a multi vitamin 2 or 3 times a week, because the MRP do contain many of your essential micro nutrients. The reason I take 2-3 is just to ensure that my body has all it needs to function properly. Hope this helps answer your question, wish you all the best.

Hi Lee & dr - if the athlete / trainer is using 0.5g per pound , then would it be safe to say that the balance of the calories needed per day , must be made up from carbohydrates and fats . If you are unsure would u add a little protein extra just for safety or would you be safe as long as your total calorie intake is correct

Last Memorial Day 2014 . I was talking to Dave Dupree who looked great at 70! He mentioned Uric acid in meat . What about natural beef with no hormones added would that have the same effect .? I'll be 62 soon developed Psoriatic arthritis so I do what I can in the gym obvious workout with some pain but then again doing nothing can be painful anyways . I don't push it to the limit anymore but I definitely don't baby myself either . Lee always have been and will be a big fan of yours and continue using some of your supplement line . Thank You
@Labrada
@Labrada 9 лет назад
Norman Witt interesting question. Here at Labrada we are under the impression uric acid is chemically an antioxidant, but when you have too much in your blood it can put you at risk for high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease, diabetes, and death. So keeping one’s uric acid levels low is an important dietary goal. How do we do that? By avoiding diets high in fatty meats and sugar. Now balancing a high meat diet (0.8-1g/lb per day) with proper carbohydrates and green leafy veggies has a far different affect to our health then a diet simply high in protein lacking proper fibrous complex carbs, and veggies. Too much of any macro nutrient without a good source of the other two is never ideal. Hope this has helped clear things up Norman, have a great week.

Just your thoughts. I have very sensitive stomach to whey proteins, my co workers hated me for a short while because of my gas and I work in an autobody repair shop! Anyways I quit taken them over a year ago stomach for me much better. Question is: I have been using liquid egg whites, I have two cups with one cup of oats and one cup of flax flakes and a little almond milk. This is my moring shake every day! So am I getting the protein from not cooking the eggs. I dont have time I also drink exact shake directly after work out. Your thoughts on this? Should I stick with this? And I use egg beaters, sometimes muscle egg. Its seems comparision wise they are basically the same. True or not true
@Labrada

+Dewey Diamond As long as the eggs are pasteurized so you dont get sick, it is a great source of protein!

hi lee this video answered most of my question. I had a kidney biopsy and I found out that I have FSGS (focal segmental glomerulosclerosis) which is some sort of kidney failure. my doctor had advice me not to take any supplements including protien powder. vitamins and fish oils are ok. my workout hasn't change it feels the same instead of taking a pre-workout, I used strong coffee instead (americano) I'm just wondering if eating 5.5oz. of protien per meal will be enough since I'm not taking any protien supplements. I weight 210lbs. height 5'7. ive been following your 12weeks plan which I love. any suggestion will be much appreciated. thanks.
@Labrada
@Labrada 9 лет назад
+Angelo Lopez Thanks for the question, the Lean Body Trainer recommends you consume 1 gram of protein per body pound per day. Based on the meat you are eating 5.5 oz (roughly 7 grams of protein per oz) would roughly come to 35-40 grams of protein. Meaning you would need to consume 7 meals a day to meet your goals. As long as you are consuming this much you are good to go, If you are consuming less meals you will need to increase your protein portions to meat your needs. Hope this helps, wish you all the best with your fitness goals. Also... please try and consume 0.5 gallons of water for every 100 grams of protein you consumer per day. So for you, 1-1.5 gallons of water per day would be great!

Can we go for plant based protein by Amway?
@m.k.spaulding5117
@m.k.spaulding5117 9 лет назад
Yes. too many think that protein is the be all end all for muscle building. We need protein, carbohydrates, healthy fats, vitamins minerals and water for not only muscle building but for fat loss as well. The only thing i have my clients do if training for competition or emergency weight loss for medical purposes is equal amounts of carbs and protein. It burns fat a little faster but spares muscle from being burned. But great video. I hope everyone watched Lee Labrada Mr.Olympia 1989 video that played right after this lol

@Labrada
@Labrada 7 лет назад
Hey MK, this is not Lee, just an employee of Labrada. There is some science proving that IF when done properly can have beneficial affects. However here at Labrada we like the idea of consistency with our nutrition. We strive for a balance between whole food complex carbs, extra lean proteins, and low amounts of healthy fats in the diet. Over time this has shown to have the best results for our physique and our health in our opinions. Wish you all the best with your fitness goals.

I've never taken supplements until Dec 20, 2018. But from Dec 21, 2018; I started using protein powder but I only take 60 grams of protein powder per day, and I weigh only 150 lbs. I noticed after taking that thing I've lost my appetite. So, if I'll add more protein powder will that affect my appetite more ?

@bkohler89
@bkohler89 5 лет назад
Lee I actually have a side question in regards to protein requirements. So...okay, Dr. Dan said the study confirms that 1 gram per pound bodyweight is where you wanna be, with that said, let's say i'm a 300 lb bodybuilder, that means I have to consume 300 grams of protein per day. For a 300 lb bodybuilder, would my body be able to handle all those 300 grams because of the 300 lb size I already am?
@Labrada
@Labrada 5 лет назад
That’s a logical question! Yes, larger people can handle larger amounts of dietary protein safely. The dietary protein requirements of a 120 pound woman are different than a 300 pound man. The 1 g per pound of body weight is just a rule of thumb. If you were to base it on your lean body mass, and assuming you are 15% body fat, you would be looking at around 270g protein per day. Spread out over six meals works out to about 45g protein per meal. All the Best, Lee

Thanks for the video. Hasn't the myth that only 30g of proetein can be absorbed at once been disproved some years ago?
@Labrada
@Labrada 8 лет назад
+fallllenangel Depending on the expert you ask I believe there is valuable evidence for many arguments on how many grams of protein can be digested at one time. One thing we do know for sure is that 1 gram of protein per body pound per day is ideal for muscle growth. So with that being said, you take your total amount needed in a day and divide that over 5-6 meals. Hope this helps, all the best.
@StopNLoad
@StopNLoad 8 лет назад
Do you calculate your protein intake by lean muscle mass or overall bodyweight?
@Labrada
@Labrada 8 лет назад
+StopNLoad We recommend 1-1.5 grams of protein per overall body weight. Now this is your ideal body weight in some cases. For those looking to lose a significant amount of body mass, lets say a male wishes to go from 285 to 200, we would ask them to calculate their macros for their goal weight not current their current weight. Hope this helps explain things, thank you for the question, all the best.

0.8 gr for every kilo. So you need at least 0.8x58kg = 46 grams. But 50 would be recommended. If you are very active and play sports, eating about 1.5gr for every kilo is recommended.

JUst a little bit too dogmatic. It depends on how long or how intensive or which parts of your body you train. Ask some of the sportsmen at the Tour de France who rode today 5 1/2 hours by 40 Degrees how much calories/ protein they consume.
@Labrada
@Labrada 9 лет назад
Michael Seebold you bring great points to the table. You mentioned Tour de France athletes riding 5 1/2 hours, I would have to argue these athletes are far beyond the 80/20 rule. Much nutrition and exercise advice can be great for 80% of people, there will always be 20% such as these extreme athletes that will fall outside of the norm. Also we did mention in the video that exercise has an affect on protein consumption as well. Thanks for being a part of the Labrada Nutrition channel, all the best.

What if u want to gain weight (muscle mass) let's say someone is 160 lbs of muscle and they take in 160 grams of protein a day, and they wanna gain one pound of muscle. Would they have to take in 161 grams? Im assuming yes but i wanted to ask anyway :)
@Labrada
@Labrada 7 лет назад
Hey bkohler89, your logic is correct, however it's not that exact. You should aim for these kind of macros, your body will still grow as long as you are in a slight calorie surplus with a protein range of anywhere from 145-190 grams of protein a day. Keeping consistent over prolong periods of time is the most efficient way to grow our muscles. Hope this helps, thank you for coming by the Labrada Nutrition YT channel.

I doubt they stuided 300 pound + people like us. But yeah 40 grams a meal... I would have to consume 8 meals... Nah 5 meals a day is better for my digestion.

@Labrada
@Labrada 8 лет назад
Hey Allen, we actually feel protein in underrated. Protein is the most important macro nutrient in our opinion. With the understanding that all macro nutrients are extremely important. No one should try and consume only 1 macro nutrient or even 2... We feel having a well balanced diet consisting of extra lean protein, whole food complex carbs, and healthy mono and polyunsaturated fats, and of course fruits and veggies is the key to overall health and wellness.

I'm 170lbs. There's no way I can consume that much protein in grams through food and shakes. I'm managing 120g max.

+Labrada Nutrition thank you. Just a quick question, what is your take on all these IF bodybuilders who eat over 100 grams of protein in as little as a 4 hour window? how do they manage to keep their physique?

Hey BizzyIzzy87 We feel the best nutrition plan is one that works for the individual, for most people this would mean 4-5 meals everyday spread evenly among each other, containing around the same macro nutrient profiles. With that said some people enjoy eating for only a set period of hours each day, so they still must meet their overall macro nutrient goals within their time frame of eating... which can make the individual macros seem very high per meal. We must also consider these are bodybuilders who measure their food to the ounce, they often exercise everyday and sometimes even more then once each day, so they are not the norm. Hope this helps answer your question, all the best.

Hey Bizzylzz87, thanks for the question. Bodybuilders nutrient needs and experiments with macro nutrient ratios may work for them. However in our opinion 95% of people will benefit from a well balanced diet, that spreads protein, carbs, and healthy fats evenly over 4-5 meals a day depending on your fitness goals, and overall life style choices. We do feel that consuming 0.65 - 1.0 gram of protein per ideal body pound per day is a great goal to have. So if you are 250 pounds consuming 100 grams of protein in a 4 hour window may suit your needs. But if you are 180 pound person, 100 grams in 4 hours may be too much in our opinion. Again it all comes down to your personal choices regarding nutrition. Hope this helps answer your question, all the best.

If you can't afford these fart powders you can always turn to drugs just like the pro's.
