Clean, safe fix for an electrical cord. If you have a wire or extension cord that is frayed, cut, cracked, torn or otherwise damaged I’ll show the correct way to fix it. You can finish off the repair with either electrical tape of shrink tubing. The example is on a hair dryer with GFCI but this repair works on just about any appliance or tool.

Have you ever done sewing machine cords?
@HouseDoctorRay
@HouseDoctorRay 7 месяцев назад
No, but you would fix it the same way. I have sometimes had to cut the end off of something else to patch a cord.

The Bell Wrap, from the old phone company, is the way to insure the splice holds. I think these are the connectors you are talking about. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2Ddj2o1DWvA.html

I have a vacuum cord that was cut slightly. No visible wire was exposed just this white insulation. There is no visible metal wire showing at all just that white insulation. Would it be alright to just wrap the slight with electrical tape?

As long as you don't see any copper it'll be fine.

Do you have to solder it?
@HouseDoctorRay
@HouseDoctorRay Год назад
You don't have to but if you are not going to then wrap the wires tightly and use a good quality electrical tape like 3M or Scotch.

Don't give up Susan. Get a soldering iron from Amazon, hardware store, or Radio Shack. Find the two spots that the wire is connected inside and unsolder them. Take the cord after the break and solder it on. It's not that hard to do and you can't make it worse. Give it a try and learn a new skill. You could try the crimp connectors or the connectors in Brian's video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2Ddj2o1DWvA.html

Not sure why it took so long for this comment to pop up. Anywho, no, you don't have to solder it but it will last longer if you do.

Most of the plugs I see around don't have screws, so you can't simply open them like in your video.

Would prolly be a bit easier and would have a stronger hold if you were to strip a bit more of the insulation for longer copper to wrap...I'd suggest at least 2 - 3x more...

You wouldn't last five minutes as a tradesman in the UK. Why wouldn't you just shorten the flex by the length of the damaged piece, and re-connect. Far safer.

Because it was a tutorial on how to splice a wire. That splice is never gonna fail.

Have someone with possibly no experience try to unsolder the factory connection and resolder the new without messing it up seems feasible.

If you don't have a toothbrush in your toolbox, be sure to use your wife's. Wash and replace it when you're done with it. What she doesn't know won't bother her. If you use your own, you'll always know that it was used to clean a hair dryer, and you won't be able to use it on your teeth.

How about you stop being cheap and buy a basic toothbrush to keep with your tools?
