Following some heavy rain limiting many other tramping options, Sam, in desperate need of some outdoors time, heads into the Kahurangi National Park to Riordans Hut.
Riordans Hut was the original destination in 'The Old Tin Hut' video from spring 2021 but we never quite made it due to lack of daylight and time.
This video picks up from the Tin Hut location and takes you all the way to Riordans Hut.

• The Old Tin Hut - Over...
Situated on the Kill Devil Track, Riordans Hut was an old sheep musterers hut built in the 1920s and being restored with great care in the early 2000s.
Starting at the Urewhenua Road end just south of Takaka township and with a light day pack on it took me around 2-2.5 hrs to reach Tin Hut (allow longer with a heavy pack as it is over 700m vertical climbing on the zig zag track).
From Tin Hut, it was another 1.5-2 hrs to Riordans Hut where the track involves far less climbing and offers such great views particularly in to the Waingaro River Valley to the west.
Riordans Hut is situated in a nice elevated clearing and is a classic slab style hut of that era.
This trip was completed as a day trip and took around 7 hrs return but if you have the time, it would make a great overnighter as well.
Recommend taking extra water as this is a dry environment with few water sources available aside from at the huts themselves.
