I'm 56 and this is the music I grew up on, I truly appreciate your show and I can't say enough how much I get a kick out of the young generation today hearing for the time what it is that old guys are talking about when we reminisce about the music. It's seems to me that the music of my time had more feeling more soal and more identity than the music of today. Who knows maybe it's just me.

You're correct, Scribe. The Trees exemplifies that we all have different natural attributes and "inequality" in certain respects, doesn't mean "inferiority." Communism is a perfect example; all are equally miserable and poor under control of a government. "....for they passed a noble law and the trees are ALL kept equal by hatchet, axe and saw." Neil was a master lyricist/story-teller. RIP, Neil.

@EJ-tm1fe 4 года назад
My simplified interpretation of "Trees": The 'oaks' are the USA and the 'maples' are Canada - national flag emblem is a red maple leaf. Instrumental (partial) interpretation: Neil's rapid-fire striking of the wooden blocks is probably representing a woodpecker because based on my experience with woodpeckers, they love to rapidly peck for insects inside telephone poles - which are formed from maple trees.

It's too bad you never got the chance to see them live. I saw them live twice, and they more than lived up to their reputation. They just kept doing one amazing thing after another. And there was a vibe about them that made you feel like you were tuned in to another world, another level of existence where everything was more real than real, and you had access to all kinds of subtle truths. Very few musicians can make that happen. Rush did it consistently for 40 years. I'm glad you found them, and the others your do reactions to. I'm glad you have the ears and the heart to hear this.

This is one of those Rush songs that are just super powered by the great and profound lyricist and drummer Neil Peart There is unrest in the forest There is trouble with the trees For the maples want more sunlight And the oaks ignore their pleas The trouble with the maples And they're quite convinced they're right They say the oaks are just too lofty And they grab up all the light But the oaks can't help their feelings If they like the way they're made And they wonder why the maples Can't be happy in their shade? There is trouble in the forest And the creatures all have fled As the maples scream 'oppression!' And the oaks, just shake their heads So the maples formed a union And demanded equal rights 'The oaks are just too greedy We will make them give us light' Now there's no more oak oppression For they passed a noble law And the trees are all kept equal By hatchet, Axe, And saw This is really a commentary on the deception of Marxist thinking, the philosophy of greed and envy and how an appeal to social justice can lead to tyranny and the loss of even the noblest principles of life. I think at the time he was strongly influenced by Ayn Rand. He moved away from it later. Ayn Rand's great defect was her rejection of God and faith, which really was the catalyst and even underpinning of the Christian Renaissance. But of course that's another story.
