Just a basic look at longer range shooting and the equipment needed to shoot to 1000+ yards. Im certainly no expert, but if I can show a few things that work for me and give an overview on the subject then all well and good. Shooters can then research anything else they want to know, or can post a comment that I or another viewer maybe able to answer! Thanks for watching, hope you enjoy the video.

Love your videos rip, good fun. Started building my 260 rem 1st of February, got it done middle of June, did a 1:8 twist on a 26" barrel. Been breaking in the barrel. With cheep Remington core- lokt ammo, even with that I am getting outstanding groups. Ready to work up my loads, starting with 140gr A-Max with 43gr of H4831sc, with Nosler brass and rem 9 1/2 primers. Start seating at 30'th off the lands and move up from there. Not to happy with the Nosler brass, cases are really clean but varying 2.014" to 2.025" with a average of 2.018" OA. Well see what happens in the days to come. Keep those bunny's guessing!

👍Excellent, if you can get it reloader 19 is good or h3450. I use 44.7 rel 19, 140 a-max, lapau brass and fed primers.
@OkieFarming
@OkieFarming 8 лет назад
I have a new can of RL-19 just looked at their loading data, they are using cci-200 primers I got plenty of those two. Will load up 5 with 43 gr of 19 see how that works. having a hard time getting lapau brass so I opted for the Nosler. just need to pick up some batteries for my chrony then off to the range
@OkieFarming
@OkieFarming 7 лет назад
Update, Picked up some lapau brass. Very clean, super happy. Ended up loading, fed primers, 44G of H-4831sc or 44.3 RL-19 with 140 Gr A-Max. Did have to do a little more barrel lapping, gun seems to like either load, it is smoking at 350 yards. Down side, went to order more bullets. Hornady dropped the 140 gr A-Max. Back to the drawing board. Need the heavier bullets for hogs Question; how do you like your sonic cleaner, Thinking about updating my old RCBS tumbler, it still works good but you know how it is. "new toys" Lol Cheers
@260rips
@260rips 7 лет назад
Yes mate sonic cleaners are good, I use the hornady one shot cleaner in mine. The hornady 140 amax are to be replaced by the new elds. The eld-x 143 grain should be a good replacement

Love your videos! Must of watched them all multiple times now they have really made me want to get into long range shooting! Thing is I'm just air gunner at the moment and have know clue where to even start getting into it all. I've spent hours surfing the web trying to find good info on starting up but have had no luck. What ever I have seen seems to contradicted by the next comment and you never know if they have the foggiest on the subject. If you have a few mins to write back and point me in the right direction with start up equipment, rifle , scope ammo binoculars That sort of thing for me to get going that would be great. Keep them videos coming! Thanks Rich 27 droitwich.
@260rips
@260rips 7 лет назад
Richard Trezise Of course mate no problem 👍 Firstly thanks for watching the videos! Ok the first thing you will need is some ground to shoot on and permission to shoot on it! I would start by applying for a .22 rimfire for rabbit control and go from there. This will teach you the basics and be a good stepping stone from airgun to centrefire. A good rifle would be a Cz 452 which is cheap to buy and accurate straight out the box. Put on it an L.E.I moderator or sak moderator (silencer) and just a cheap scope such as a Hawke will do you fine, this is basically the same set up I use. Any info you need just ask 👍
@richardtrezise8668
@richardtrezise8668 7 лет назад
Thanks for getting back so fast, I've got a little land at the moment for the air gun but is no where near big enough for even a rimfire so I need to push for more land first and foremost! If I get some better land il try the rig you have said and hopefully get back to you sooner rather than later! Thanks again Rich

Thank you, yes she does shoot nice with the loads I'm using. 6.5 is a great long range calibre and the a-max 140 grain are excellent bullets over 44.7 grains of reloader 19 with lapau brass. At 150m it will shoot a group you can cover with a 5p if I do my bit!

Hi Mark, Coming back to this video after getting my 223 I'm definitely looking at getting a chrony. I've found a lot of factory rounds coming out a lot hotter then their printed velocities meaning a lot more ammunition spent gathering drop data. I'm wonder how accurate your chronograph is, and whether you perform any form of "ballistic truing" or "calibration" to double check the data. Thanks mate!
@260rips
@260rips 9 лет назад
If your finding its a lot faster than printed velocities, check your scales against someone else's to be sure they are accurate and look out for pressure signs. You may find some difference between chrono to chrono and yes you will always need to adjust your velocities to match your true drops in the field with your ballistic program.

Hi mate, friend of mine was using the same ammo in a 223 and was nailing rabbits over 500 yards with it! It’s good for a fair bit further too but the wind will be your biggest challenge with such a small bullet. Strelok pro is a good app and just adjust the velocity in the app to match actual drops in the field 👍

can you please expand on how you wrote up the quick range card that sits in your scope cap at 6:41? as im looking at writing one up to put in my caps, just trying to see how people do it differently and what will benefit me the most. thanks
@260rips
@260rips 7 лет назад
Riesso Hi mate ok the required drops for your chosen ammo combination can be gained using a ballistic app such as strelok on your smart phone or online. My drops are written out in 25 yard increments in 3 columns the first is the range, the next is the moa adjustment required and the 3rd is the moa adjustment required for a 5mph wind which as a rule of thumb for ranges out to 500 yards can be doubled for a 10mph wind and halved for a 2.5mph wind etc Simply write them very small from your zero range to as far as you can get on the size of the circle of paper you have cut to fit inside your scope lens cap. Lay this bit of paper inside the cap with a piece of clear plastic (the sort you find on most product packaging) cut to fit tightly inside the cap to stop it falling out and prevent rain wetting the paper 👍

Very impressive mate, out of interest are you always on full x22 magnification for these shots? I've just started taking longer range shots with my best being a 288yard fox, i would be happy if i was confident at 300 yards. What sort of 3 shot group is acceptable at 300 yards? Cheers
@260rips
@260rips 10 лет назад
Hi mate thanks for watching! Yes I prefer to use higher mag most of the time. As far as group size, it really depends on the size of the kill zone on your target. On small critters ie rabbits and smaller, generally speaking a hit with a centre fire anywhere on its body is usually dramatic enough to kill the target quickly. If you can shoot an inch group with your rifle at 100 yards that will most likely be about 3 inches at 300 and 4" at 400 so you can use that as a guide. Reloading ammo can normally give a half inch to inch group in most modern factory ammo. Same as anything, the more money you spend the better it gets! What set up are you using? Well done on the fox by the way ;-)

Currently i use a remington 700sps in .223 with 55gr hornady ballistic tip ammo and nikon monarch scope. Im in the market for new optics and had my eye on a meopta 6-18x50 as ive read a lot of good reviews (quality glass for £500),but after seeing your vids i just want MORE MAGNIFICATION!!!!!! Any scopes you would suggest around the £500 price tag? I doubt i will be shooting beyond 400 yards once i have acquired the skill!
@260rips
@260rips 10 лет назад
That's a great setup to get going with, a 223 if tinkered with will get you out to 800 or more. A rem 700 is a great rifle for customising. As for scopes my advice would be buy the best you can afford, maybe look second hand, nightforce are excellent with good target turrets but you would be looking more like £1000 s/h! But well worth it. I was using a bushnell elite which had about a 30 mag on it and was about £600 new which was pretty good. If I where you I'd speak to Chris at uk Gunworks if you want to get that remmy out to 800 ;-) trouble is you get comfy at 400 then you want to go further ! My advice is always buy once, cry once! Mag isn't all that important, I have shot at bunny s and stuff at 1200 yards on a x22 mag no worries which would be same as shooting them at 600 on 11mag. Ideally a scope of say x18 upwards is ideal. Get on uklongrange forum mate, I'm on there along with loads of good lads doing same thing, I've picked up loads from this forum ;-)

@nacholibre1962 3 года назад
Using commercial ammo manufacturer's data assumes you are using the same barrel length and rate of rifling twist. Given that you likely have no idea what the manufacturer used in terms of barrel/rifling, you are far better of using a chrono for the factory ammo, but the average will be a broader average than with hand loads (assuming you know what you're doing when hand loading and unassuming also that you are meticulous in your process).

It's an accuracy international folding stock. I had this stock fitted as part of the rifle build which was done by border barrels. Any custom rifle smith will be able to get you one but they come with a hefty price tag! If I were to buy another custom rifle I would pick one of the McMillan stocks as the aics (accuracy international custom stock) stocks although very good are heavy and mark quite easily, lovely to shoot though!

Does anyone know the answer to this? It's about the mathematics of calibre: That box of ammunition at the beginning of the film says 6.5mm and .264. Now that's 0.264 of an inch. For practical purposes they are the same calibre. Yet 1 inch, which is, 25.4mm times 0.264 inch = 6.70mm. That's, 2 tenths of a millimetre difference. Or, another way is, 6.5mm divided by 25.4 = 0.256, again, almost 2 tenths of a mil difference. This happens time and time again when I do this with other calibres. Can anyone explain this? Many thanks.
@260rips
@260rips 7 лет назад
Franco Carrieri I maybe wrong but I believe the calibre is measured on the lands and the bullet is slightly larger causing these grooves to cut into the bullet as it travels down the barrel.
@francocarrieri1988
@francocarrieri1988 7 лет назад
That makes sense. Many thanks. Admirable shooting by the way.
@bovril9315

how often do you clean your barrel on your rifle?
@260rips
@260rips 9 лет назад
Everyone has their own routines for barrel cleaning. I clean the barrel after each time I've been out wether I've shot one round or 30. Right or wrong, I never use a brush on the barrel only a patch soaked in kg carbon remover. Keep putting fresh soaked patches through till they come out clean, that's it.
@bovril9315
@bovril9315 9 лет назад
I went to a good gun smith a few months ago who got a little mardy because my barrel was not as clean as he would have liked. hence the interest. he was wrong of course as he spent ages scrubbing my barrel needlessly. your routine makes a lot of sense to me. why remove copper when its the copper that holds accuracy. its good to remove carbon as this leads to corrosion through acid and water.
@260rips
@260rips 9 лет назад
Spot on mate, that's my theory. Leave the copper ther it stays consistant ;-)

Hi 260, great job on all your videos mate - looking at eventually doing some longer range shooting with my Sako 85 in 223 when she arrives! Was wondering what you reckon the best way of developing your ballistics data is? Do you recommend using a chronograph, in conjunction with ballistics software (such as JBM) for a quick (and accurate?) bullet drop chart. Was wondering which approach you took? Thanks mate
@260rips
@260rips 9 лет назад
Thanks mate, the 85 is a lovely rifle and a good choice, I had a 75 before I had the custom built 260. Ok my advice would be pick a bullet weight that best suits the twist rate of your barrel , try a selection of bullets in this weight range at 100 yards to see which shoots best and generally play around with loads and seating depths to find a load that suits the rifle. Once you have this wrapped up, stick with that load and get to know how it shoots! Crono your loads and put that to a ballistic app this should get you pretty well on target however best drop charts are from in field gathered proven data, good luck with the long range stuff buddy, start closer and then start pushing the ranges as you gain confidence atb mark
@Schilgyballs
@Schilgyballs 9 лет назад
260rips Thanks Mark, I have the 1 in 8 twist so I'll be trialling everything between 55gr and 75gr. Just got to get some reloading gear once I've saved up a bit (sako's aren't cheap haha). I won't be able to get a chronograph for the next few months, so I'll have to collect some field data to begin with! Cheers for the reply, keep up the great videos :)
@260rips
@260rips 9 лет назад
The lee anniversary kit is about £130 and a great way to get into reloading then you can upgrade bits from there. Give the sako factory ammo a go first then when your reloading I'd try the 75 grain A-max with lapau brass ;-)
@Schilgyballs
@Schilgyballs 9 лет назад
Yeah I've looked into a couple of reloading kits. I've got my eyes set on the hornady classic lock n load kit and then I'll just purchase some quality dies, not 100 percent sure which ones yet. Will definitely be giving the factory ammunition a go. Last owner was getting 1\2 moa with 55gr vmax which is promising as I wasn't sure how the 55gr pills would travel with that twist. And I've definitely got my eyes on the A-max's :)
