It’s funny how he said he wanted a blues singer, but not an “operatic” singer, but just two years after Ian left, Blackmore himself left to form Rainbow with Dio, who’s an “operatic” rock singer if I’ve ever heard one.
@JacoWium
@JacoWium 2 года назад
Indeed. There's something not quite accurate with what Ritchie is saying here, not to mention the contradiction of the alpha males statement immediately followed by the description of how Gillan told him he's a hero and asked him how to perform... Memories do change as we age though and it could be the way that Ritchie reflects on it without being insincere. Whatever the case, it's hard to fully buy into what he said here.
@Losrandir
@Losrandir Год назад
@@JacoWium I read it as Ian did make an effort to be nice and good and friendly and diplomatic and all by saying Ritchie's his hero and asking him how he'd like him to sing... but when Ritchie wanted bluesy etc. Ian wasn't going to bend after all! So they both made some effort to compromise, but it was ultimately against their natures
@JacoWium
@JacoWium Год назад
@@Losrandir That's a reasonable take on it, yes. If I had a superpower I wish I could travel back in time but just to be a fly on the wall, to know what really went down in history (in general). I've done enough reading on neurological studies to know that I shouldn't fully trust my own memories, so I hesitate to buy any one-sided version of an event, regardless of how sincere. Still, based on the available info, I think you may be on the right track there.

Ian Gillan has managed to get along with one guitarist (Steve Morse) for a period of 26 years: since 1995. From 1973 to 1983 and beyond, Blackmore ultimately had issues with five different vocalists: Gillan, Coverdale, Bonnett, Dio and Turner. If you do the math, it's not that hard to figure out where the problem originates.

That is totally legitimate and understandable. No one to blame there. Then he basically says he just didn’t like Gillan’s singing style. This is absurd. That’s like Mitch Mitchel saying he respected Hendrix, but just would have preferred him doing a different style of guitar playing. It's quite the mixture of different types of vocalists that have worked alongside Ritchie throughout the years from the almost soft/pop vocals of Rod Evans then came the operatic/Screamer Ian Gillan then onto the Bluesy pipes of David Coverdale then to operatic/huge epic sounding again with the late great Ronnie James Dio then came the radio friendly commercial era Hard Rock pipes of both Graham Bonnet & Joe Lynn Turner then came Doogie White for Ritchie's Final Hard Rock album Stranger In Us All (1995) then finally his current musical partner & now wife and mother of his two kids Candice Night it's been one heck of a ride but I feel Ritchie doesn't get enough recognition for the vocalists he's discovered & given a chance to make music with him.

I think Hughes alone could've successfully taken over for both Gillan and Glover and blown everyone away in the process. Hughes was a natural frontman, could hit all of Gillan's high notes then turn around and sing bluesy all night long. He did it quite well in Trapeze. (Go listen to some Trapeze, Medusa and You are the Music if you haven't and you'll see why Purple hired Hughes). But "frontmen" that didn't play an instrument were all the thing back then. Plus Blackmore said Hughes was too much of a tenor. Ok, so I'm glad Purple gave us Hughes AND Coverdale. The best one/two punch of all time. And Gillan thought that his retiring was force Purple to break up. Thanks Ritchie for Burn, Stormbringer and Made In Europe.
@PurpleInTheDeep
@PurpleInTheDeep 8 лет назад
Burn is a classic album, but Stormbringer and CTTB are lesser efforts. Didn't hear Made In Europe. Hughes is still a really great singer (compared to Gillan), but I'm really turned off by his affection of soul and funk music. Also, Hughes still has that powerful voice because he didn't perform Chil In Time over and over again for so many decades and he didn't have throat surgery (like Gillan had before he joined Black Sabbath).
@TheSteveSteele
@TheSteveSteele 8 лет назад
Hughes would have never needed surgery because he sings properly. Gillan sang properly most of the time, but I guess his band mates and fans expected him to scream, scream and scream some more but unfortunately he did it the wrong way. There is a safe way to scream. But Gillan's screaming sounded very nice for about 4 or 5 years and then he started loosing it. You're right, Child In Time, the end of Space Truckin, No No No, Fools, Into The Fire, etc.. In Sabbath, and here's the weird thing covering Ozzy is harder then it seems. It's not that Ozzy has some killer technique but his singing voice sits right were most male singer's bridges are. That's the place were most rock singers go from middle voice to high. But Ozzy just stayed in that bridge area and sloppily powered through it. Ozzy just went for it. I'm surprised e's lasted so long. Just about everyone that's tried to cover Ozzy has failed. Gillan failed. Hughes had an accident but I'm not sure what he would have done. Rob Halford STRUGGLED big time at that 1992 show. Man, I felt sorry for the Metal God. That must have been torture. Dio though, figured out how to re-inturpet Ozzy so it wouldn't hurt his voice. Replacing a signer with another singer in these big loud heavy bands is just flat out hard a lot of the time, especially if they have sing the original singer's material all night.
@PurpleInTheDeep
@PurpleInTheDeep 8 лет назад
Yes, Gillan was expected to scream so much particularly from Blackmore. He wanted to have a band heavier than Led Zeppelin by the time Gillan and Glover joined. And it looks like it worked, because different sources say that by 1973, Purple was the best band in the world, but Gillan was exhausted and he badly wanted a break. Unfortunately the management and Blackmore didn't understand him, so he left. Gillan said "to walk out of a band at that peak seemed really stupid, but I didn't see no other way to put it". In Sabbath, I know Gillan's biggest problem was learning some of Ozzy's lyrics. Ozzy doesn't have indeed a great singing technique, but he's good; one of the few metal singers who is not a screamer by the way. Almost forgot that Hughes was also in Black Sabbath, but yeah, he didn't have enough time to perform the Ozzy songs because he got involved into a fist fight that affected his singing for a time. And it's not like Hughes needed surgery as well (thank God he didn't need it), it's just that I believe that if Hughes would have screamed (properly or not) as often as Gillan had, his voice wouldn't have remained so powerful to this day.
@TheSteveSteele
@TheSteveSteele 8 лет назад
+PurpleIntoDeep Ozzy is actually difficult for other singers to cover. He stays in he "vocal bridge" range and powers through it. It's an uncomfortable place to sing from. Gillan, Hughes and Halford all had problems, especially Halford (whew, that was a rough gig). But Dio had the correct technique to handle Ozzy's belting in the bridge areas. Hughes could have figured it out probably.
@PurpleInTheDeep
@PurpleInTheDeep 8 лет назад
***** Probably for you, Hughes could handle anything, but I can tell you for sure that he couldn't handle Child in Time at all. Purple didn't play it live during MK III and I guess we all know why.

Seems like there's always an explanation from Blackmore about why he didn't get on with people. And it's never that he's problem. Gillan had one of the best rock voices of the era. Who was better? (Plant, ok, but different style. But not Ozzy, Halford or anyone doing what became metal). Ironic that as soon as he wanted a vocalist for Rainbow, he signed Dio. Who is similar to Gillan.

Yes.If you think how he altered the sound of Rainbow after Dio left.Borderline pop music.Bonnet and Turners lineups were very popish at times.Purple with Coverdale and Hughs were more poppish anyway as it turned out.I guess pop music sells more records .

They starred in a spaghetti Western, it was called High Spoon, where Ian reached for the ketchup but Ritchie got him with a pasta pie in the face. Ritchie danced around with fists a-ready while Ian sobbed, allegedly with rage, but rumour has it Ritchie had spoiled his tank top. Jon cleared off, Paicey looked pissed as a fart, and Roger grimaced and said: Ian, you've gone too far this time.... (Credits) Ian Gillan as the victim. Ritchie Blackmore as the villain. Jon Lord as the Mexican. Ian Paice as Tiny Dancer. Roger Glover as the diplomat. Candice Night as the cheerleader. Bruce Payne as the man on the ledge.

+Dom Calder Yea, I think Rodgers had the kind of voice that was best suited for replacing Gillan and sounding good on a Deep Purple recording. But unfortunately, he was doing too well with Bad Company and wasn't gonna leave...until later, when Purple had already disbanded.

It's kind of sad that Gillan and Blackmore don't get along. Steve Morse was a fantastic guitarist and a full-fledged member of DP, so for Blackmore to have taken his place would have been completely wrong!But when Steve left Deep Purple, what would have been better than if they could bury the hatchet, agree on a way to work together so that Blackmore could join Purple again. Yes, Gillan and Blackmore are both alpha males, but if they had toned down their strong desires it should be possible to make it work.

It was a clashing of the egos, nothing to do with Gillan's singing. At the beginning, he said they couldn't get along.... 2 alpha males. Imo Jon Lord was just as important in the band's sound as Ritchie. Wonder why he couldn't have convinced them to make peace and just keep on creating amazing music together. When Ritchie left, half the band's sound left as well. Nothing against Steve Morse, great guitarist but Ritchie was irreplaceable as far as DP goes.

I thought Ian Gillan was great but was happy when David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes came onboard. I prefer their singing style and feeding off one another. The album "Burn" is my favourite Deep Purple album along with "Come Taste the Band". Those wouldn't have been made had Gillan remained in the band. In the end, it's all just a matter of personal taste. All the singers in Deep Purple have been great. Rod Evans was incredible just not a screamer.

All the different vocalist Blackmore had with Deep Purple and Rainbow? 7 of them over the years. I don't know why Blackmore was not happy because Ian Gillan was the best singer over all the others I don't understand why they didn't keep Gillan happy because that was the spark in the band. No offense to the other singers but that combination Couldn't be matched. I know Dio with Rainbow was great but the original line up couldn't be beat!!l

My first DP concert was the BURN tour, March, 1974. Also on the bill was Tucky Buzzard, Savoy Brown ( Boogie brothers 3 guitars: Stan Webb, Miller Anderson, Kim Simmonds -excellent !), and DEEP PURPLE, headliner. Cloverdale and Hughes were OK; Ian and John, top notch, and Ritchie thought it best to smash a strat- very contrived. He was fine until he did the Pete Townsend's shtick!

Best heavy rock band ever the mark 2 lineup was their most successful period. I think Jon lord and Ian Paice were more on the side of Ian than Ritchie’s so instead of breaking up they should have had a big pow row and sorted out their differences They had the talent there already so songs could have been written to satisfy both Ritchie and Ian G It only takes one cog in the chain to break and the whole thing will fall apart. Still after all that’s said and done still the MASTERS of their time and the greatest heavy rockers that have ever produced the best music of a timeless age

Interesting. Paul Rodgers is definitely one of my top ten singers, Ian Gillan isn't. I think I see where Blackmore is coming from. Blues allows for almost infinite variety of expression while metal is much more operatic. It follows form, while blues doesn't. I realise that there are certain motifs, maybe clichés, which are associated with blues, but those do not define blues.
