Good stuff. I never took the PFD too seriously until I had made a silly mistake on a lake in Upper Peninsula and the kayak flipped. I was laughing in the water until I realized the cold, wind, and depth were no joke. I didn’t go under but it wasn’t going to end well had I not caught a life vest at just the right moment, as I was tiring out. Will never make that mistake again. Preach on Ben! ❤

As a very experienced whitewater rafter, I can tell you that the most scary times have been in class 2 or below water. Everyone is ready for a big rapid, but its always the unexpected stuff that happens fast that makes me scared. Great video. Respect the River!

One thing that could be added. I carry a Garmin in reach gps locator. If something bad happens you might not have cell service on the river. You also need to communicate your exact position. That can be difficult if you are somewhere in the middle of a ten mile float, or somewhere you aren’t totally familiar with.

Good stuff. I was on a multiday float trip in AK a few years ago and the river went to flood conditions. We had 2 boats, 8 people, including an 80 yr old man. One of the 2 guides/oarsmen shredded an ankle when he pegged a rock in a bad rapid and went into shock. What followed was two days of insanity as we tried to get out alive. Thanks to a calm 2nd guide and his clear direction, we made it, but not without flipping a boat, losing a ton of gear, and much more drama, all in downpour rain conditions. This is serious shit.

ALL great reminders, thanks Ben. "I don't wear PFD's" "Well, good thing we haven't left the ramp then. Get off my boat". Your passion comes thru. Sounds like something personal may have happened lately? I hope not. EVERY time I take someone down the river I give the "safety talk" regardless of how many times they may have gone with me OR how experienced they think they may be. Thanks again for the reminders. Stay Huge.

On PFD’s: on a nice day and swimming from the bank in a calm lake, grab your PFD, swim out to a water depth just a bit taller than you, and try to put your PFD on and buckled. This is NOT a lesson on how to do it but hard nearly impossible it is to put on a PFD in the water. Knives on moving water: choose sharp but NOT pointing. Puncher wounds are very bad! Great video

I've been an avid whitewater kayaker and rafter for 23 years. This is good sound advice. On a year like this one in the west, some of the rivers are still running high. Don't think it's safe because you were on the same river at about the same time last year. Always wear a PFD in swift water. Here in northern California I've personally seen a few people have a bad day on the river. There have been more drownings this year due to high water. Be safe out there!

This year, after 2yrs of fishing in a sit-in kayak in still water, I bought a fishing kayak and took it on a river, wearing a pfd, when it's cfs was below avg. I didn't go up stream far, and anchored at the top of a pool and caught 5 large fall fish in 20 minutes. As I drifted back to my take out, I got caught cross current and lodged as it was very shallow. I got tipped a bit and was able to push off, but lessons are in my future kayak plans😁

Thanks Ben! I almost fell out of my small John boat on a chilly day on Lake Travis. Sitting on ice chest and leaned a little, it tilted and instantly I was hanging over the side, have no idea how I wasn’t thrown. No PFD on, trolling motor going, No one around. Pretty sure I’d have died. Got home ordered the best rated NSR PFD, and made it into a survival vest.. Waterproof phone case, Whistle, Knife, Fire starters, Repellent, Snacks, Signal mirror, and carry my Car Keys in it so if I get back I can drive home. I also made a disconnect plug for trolling motor I strapped to my ankle, if I fall the boat stops. Now I won’t get on a boat until vest is on and zipped. I always tell someone where I’m going also. Sorry so long but it’s amazing how you don’t realize how close you’re sitting to death, until it happens. This is Huge Ben. Thanks again. Stay safe folks.

Yeah. I'm glad you put this out there. The river is indifferent. I've felt that brain-stem fear when all the Treasure is in the boat, right in front of me. This stuff needs to be understood. Even the best, and most riparian, of your 57.5K subscribers should wrestle with these truths. Kudos for breaking your format. It's necessary and timely. This video applies to all classes of paddling and rowing. It also transcends regions. Well done. Thanks Ben

Thank you for putting this out there. I am new to the rafting and fishing scene but I have supreme respect for the water and the dangers that it can present. I have taken learning trips with guides first and got my first taste on the oars with guides with me...very helpful to gain some confidence but heard from the professional's mouth about the river and what I was doing well and where i was being reckless...we never fished just worked the raft and the river. Thank you...rivers and water is unforgiving...thank you again...I have continued to raft with my friends but we check gauges and only go if I feel confident and experienced enough for the challenge. Many a day we have changed the trip for another day.

Another thing to think about are low head dams/roller dams. Where I live in the Midwest pretty much every river has a couple of these. Know where they are and keep an eye out for warning signs. Know when you have to turn around and/or where the boat ramps and portages are.

Great video as always! I will add always have a spare breakdown oar on board stashed away wherever. Many years back an old timer in another boat saw me loose an oar. I did end up getting the oar back somewhat quickly. However at the boat launch he drilled me about having a spare. Have had a spare on board since. It's come in handy twice I think. One trip I lent it to another boat that lost an oar, that boat had kids on board and the sun was going down.

I have had to cut an anchor loose and it happened quickly. Rowing, when we started our rowing journey we started with classes from sweetwater. Thanks Ben for bring this subject up for discussion. The one thing that sinks more boats every year and is so dangerous. HIGH WATER EDDYS, if you know how to row them, that's great. However, pulling your boat / raft over to look at the river ahead is not a bad idea. If the your favorite river normally runs 4000 cfs and is now running 15,000 cfs you might want to do a little recon to decide whether you should be rowing. Last thing inflatable pfds they are comfortable and can save your life. Check out what the rules are on your favorite water they can very river to river. Remember, you have to survive the trip to tell those tall fishing tales.

Good info. That scared and nervous feeling heightens awareness and keeps you safer. I've only been in trouble when I've become complacent on water I feel comfortable rowing. I was stuck on a rock last month on a large rapid of the North Umpqua in Oregon because the water had dropped 6" but I didn't bother to look at levels because I've rowed, tubed and even swam that rapid dozens of times. Big mistake and I easily could have flipped my drift boat. Regarding life jackets: I used to offer a jacket to friends before we entered sketchy water. After a couple butt puckering experiences it's now a requirement that everyone put a jacket on.

was out on 34 degree day and 50 degree water temps when i fell out of my kayak for first time. Didn't think it would happen. But i always wear my pfd and very glad i did that day. It keeping me afloat let me take a sec to process things and get out. Don't know if that woulda happened without it with the clothes/shock of cold water/air temps etc...Water was only 12 feet deep and i was only probably 50 yards from launch. Second tip is practice kayak reentry. I had not and could not get back into my yak. Was a very cold swim and exhausting even with a pfd in those conditions. So...Always wear PFD and always practice any emergency procedures you know you might encounter. Great video.

About 12 years ago, a friend and I were floating the gunni. We were fishing and drinking all day and forgot to put our lifejackets back on as we were leaving town. Well, as we got to the first big rapid (right by the bridge) heading to the waterpark, the boat flipped. We both fell in. I fell directly under the current and for a few seconds it felt like the biggest waves I've ever experienced in the ocean were crashing down on me. I tried, but I could not escape the force of the wave crashing on me. Luckily, after a few more seconds, I just popped out and was immediately taken down stream with the current. I let the current take me down to a point where I was able to grab a tree branch and pull myself out. My friend was nowhere to be seen. I get out, walk around the bend, and find him floating uncontrollably into the meat of the waterpark. That day changed my life and I will always have the upmost respect for the river because of it.

Great stuff. Two additional things. The person running the boat is in charge of safety, and other people follow their rules. Never get out on the fast water side of the boat. Had a friend do that. Ended up clinging to the side of it while I finally got us into a slow eddy near shore where I could get him to safety.

Right on! Danger STILL exists at moderate and lower level. I have had the stern settle under water because the rower didn't see the big submerged rock the boat settled on. Inattention is another hazzard. I have seen two boats wrapped on (same,) freeway bridge pier where the current was slow and the space between was 50 or 60 feet...the only way to hit the pier was not paying attention...probably while landing a fish. Like Ben said...the rower is responsible to know whats going on around the boat...but everyone in the boat needs to pay attention to what,s going on around them.

Good content. If you spend enough time on the water, something will happen. I've been involved in a few different recoveries/searches. Seen a few deaths. Each time had the same factors, high-water, inexperience and no flotation. Also a body tied to a canoe wrapped around a tree. One other thing that seems obvious but clothing is important. I saw a body in jeans and steel toed boots, must have sank like a stone in fast water.
