This is slightly more difficult with the language barrier, but I feel the consistency and authenticity comes in the lyrics and message of (G)I-dle songs. They’ve always had a strong message around individuality, being true to yourself and female empowerment. They certainty do the concept changes from song to song as that is how K-pop works, but it is always around this consistent message.

(G)I-DLE's Yuqi's solo music is actually heavily influenced by rock, so it's unsurprising IDLE would eventually do a rock concept. What's really punk about this concept aside from the superficial aspects is actually the lyricism, which (G)I-DLE have always been brazen with since their inception, unlike most girl groups. (G)I-DLE are the only girl group in the history of k-pop to produce all their title tracks, and since their third mini album have taken part in producing ALL their songs in their albums. Lyrically, Soyeon is a genius and this song may translate better to you if you read the lyrics and look at it in the context of Korea--where a mysoginistic president was just elected and being a feminist and doing anything "masculine" still receives criticism from the general public.

This song is about "Don't identify me to any category, i am whom i am, just me, idle" and yet you guys said they don't have any identity, and i found it very irony. Not try to be offences, just said my personal thought. Fun fact is...Idle never ever came back with same music genre, not even once.If you listen all thier cameback song one by one starting from their debut song Latata to Tomboy, you will be amaze. And what's more important are...all the cameback songs, are written by same person, include lyrics and compose, even creating the concept, all done by Soyeon herself ALONE. If you knew Idle well enough, you will know the greatest strength of this group are Soyeon.

Identity in K-pop is something that actually doesn't work, because they have eras and concepts each comeback and well, you can say Soyeon is a genius for doing that so well every comeback. And to be honest, I really enjoy a group that is so talented and can change every now and them and you know, they have their own styles in a way.
@joystv50

That discussion is very interesting and i can see why this constant "concept change" for groups can be seen as an "issue". The thing is that there are a lot of groups who kept the same concept for years since debut but because people started to complain about these groups doing the "same sh*t everytime", a lot of these artists were kind of forced to change and switch concepts which would make them seem like they "have grown". I can only think about twice who had a very cutesy and bubbly concept until fancy. The truth is i don't know if this is specific to the kpop industry but personnally i really enjoy watching my favorites artists touch on a lot of genres and try new things but it's true that there are not a lot of them who can still keep their essence and authenticity while doing it.

It's an interesting discussion at the end. I know what Zac means but to me this still very much so feels like G-Idle because their identity is always being rebels like Dizz said. Especially Soyeon, no matter what genre, concept they do. A perfect example of a group that does various different concepts, but *still* keep their identity is Red Velvet! To me this is *exactly* why they remain the top kpop group of diversity in concepts! No matter what concepts they pull of it ALWAYS sounds like Red Velvet because they have found their iconic, well known sound with all the members harmonizing together and singing the choruses together. A great example is their current releases Feel My Rythm and Wildside which are polar opposite concepts, but they both feel 100% like Red Velvet!

10:02 what an interesting discussion! It's something that I can agree but also something I can understand. [In my opinion] I think the main thing about idols not really having "authenticity" or "brand" is because of how saturated KPop is. A lot of groups just come out all of a sudden with similar concepts & for groups to stand out, they would do different concepts, as we all know how competitive the industry is. BLACKPINK and TWICE for example. Especially during their early years, they were always being compared to 2NE1 and SNSD (respectively) for how similar their concepts and even number of members. The best example to have a "brand" for themselves is no other than BIGBANG. I would say them being on hand with their music probably helped them find their sound or brand. Most, or if not, 97% of the idol groups from then to even this time, doesn't have a say to anything.

I usually like your take, and I'm glad you liked Tomboy, but this time one thing you said bothered me; let me see if I can change your mind. "Where is _your_ identity?" For (G)I-DLE, it is in their music, their voices and their attitude. They pride themselves on making all of their music themselves (aside from several songs on the debut album). There is always a co-producer, but the job separation is usually such that they mostly just do technical stuff (like buying/renting equipment, picking samples etc) and finishing arrangement and mastering touches, while the overwhelming majority of the creative process lies in the (G)I-DLE songwriter line (mostly Soyeon - the "main girl" - but she's been mentoring the others and two of the others also now have several songs each each under their belt). For the vast majority of (G)I-DLE songs, Soyeon has conceived, written and co-produced them, and had a say in the MV concept, costumes, choreography... basically every single part of the production. She also often takes experimental risks, in that many of the songs are surprising to a degree if you compare it to the rest of K-pop. It's not that they are doing something different than others (though they are); they are doing something different in practically every song. Uh-Oh is completely different from Oh My God which is completely different from Senorita which is completely different from Tomboy, which is... you get the picture. You're talking about how rock and roll is freedom; Soyeon has as much freedom as is possible in K-pop without founding your own label. As to the voices, Soyeon as their leader made a rather controversial decision, she asked the members not to take vocal lessons. She saw that they all have very unique voices, and thought that using the vocal teachers that the whole industry uses would just iron them into sounding just like everyone else. And she was right. (G)I-DLE are instantly recognisable. All of their songs are rather different, but two things stay the same: they continue to experiment, and you always know when it is (G)I-DLE singing. No-one else really sounds like Yuqi, or Minnie, for example. And this feeds back into them being self-producing. Whereas most other songs of other groups are bought from songwriters and then the parts are distributed to the members as best they can, Soyeon writes the songs with specific people and specific voices in mind. She even writes lyrics in such a way to make it easy to pronounce for each member, keeping in mind that half (well, over half now) of her group are foreigners. She treats her members as instruments, and deploys them in each song strategically. And finally, the attitude. From the beginning, there is a running theme of all of their releases. First album: "I am" - this is who we are, we'll do what we do. Next one, "I made" - the pride of self-producing group. "I Trust" - trust your feelings, do what you think is right. "I burn" - express inner passion. "I never die" - despite others trying to bring us down, we survive, we excel. And in particular, with Tomboy, they reject the gender stereotypes - Kpop industry thinks we should be dressed like this, and sound like this, and behave like this, but fuck that noise, we refuse to be pigeonholed. From the beginning almost all of their songs have been rather unisex. They are obviously female; but they don't do "female songs", if that makes any sense. And also, this whole album has a lot more anger and sadness than their other work, but given that the last year has not been kind to them at all, it is exactly the sound I should have expected from them in retrospect. They _are_ angry, and they _are_ sad. I would much rather they were not; but given that they are, I am grateful to be able to hear it: genuine emotion. You're talking about eyeliner and clothing as identity... isn't this superficial? Shouldn't music matter more? It reminds me of a contestant on American Idol, Andrew De Leon, who came looking like a goth... but then proceeded to sing Puccini's O mio babbino caro; after hearing his amazing performance, would you classify him as a gothic rock singer, or as an opera singer? I should hope you'd choose the latter. Did Tomboy not _sound_ like an actual punk pop song? If it did... then where is the "shortcut"? In the west, I admit, fans are used to hearing the same thing from an artist, to the point that there will be an uproar should the artist decide to exercise a bit of their supposed "freedom" and try a new genre, like it happened to Linkin Park, for example. I do not think that is okay. If an artist decides to stick to a genre of their own free will, rather than because they are prisoners to their fan base, fine; but even so, why is that more respected than having the versatility to attack any damn genre you please? (G)I-DLE aren't dipping their toes in different genres and using "shortcuts" to make them believable. They create songs of all kinds, and they perform them _well._ More than almost any other group, (G)I-DLE is absolutely (G)I-DLE, whether there's graffiti, lions or church bells. I hope I didn't come as too aggressive, but I just don't think (G)I-DLE deserves that particular criticism at all; I hoped, with a bit more information, you might see it differently.

I love that you were open to discuss K-pop from an artist/fan standpoint. Seeing these patterns and reflective moments really sparked a lot of thoughts in my mind. I’m sure others feel the same and agree with you too! Not sure if I’m just YG biased but I do feel like their artists tend to have more of that identity because of the freedom they get when creating music. Though some are still produced by their main producers, they get to add in their own colors to the song. Even stray kids from JYP, you definitely feel that each of their songs are authentic more so to themselves rather than catering to today’s typical music (aka TikTok).

It could be false so it’s not misinformation. There was just no evidence to prove she was innocent and since her name was already tarnished in Korea, the need for evidence was immense. Reasons for there being little evidence was because it supposedly happened a long time ago when she was like 12 years old or younger. From the evidence and the way the accuser has spoken of Soojin, I don’t think she is guilty. Unfortunately Gidle are under cube entertainment and they don’t protect their artists whatsoever. YESS CMON SKYE SWEETNAM Actually yujin from IVE covered tangled up in me by skye sweetnam so I think youre right that style is getting popular in korean now Also in terms of authenticity in kpop I definitely agree how the concepts can feel like a thing veneer that doesnt really cut through. But with idle in general all their songs are written and produced for the most part by that girl Dizz was talking about (Soyeon), and I think the message itself is sort of "rock n roll" and fits with the vibe of "sticking it to the man" like Zac said. Their name was originally gidle but this comeback they changed it to idle because they dont want to be seen as a "girl group". And the meaning of the word tomboy in the song is about screwing the whole stereotype of being a girl especially in the kentertainment scene and not being restricted to the small bubble of what a "girlgroup" can do (you can see at the end of the video with the ken doll holding the balloon with G on it and it goes pop). They want kpop idols to be "themselves" all the time, but if an actor portrays the same character in every single movie he or she would get mocked for it. In kpop, the visual medium is as important as the music, and every video tells a different story. That's why kpop companies have an Arts and Repertoire director that is in charge of the overall look of the group, and that changes from time to time for good reason. Dizz you’re so right about everything you said! I hope no one takes it as “hate” it’s just the truth. I guess that’s the good and bad thing about kpop, they are willing to do many different concepts but nothing is better than authenticity. It resonates and it makes you remember them.

The fact Soyeon was somehow afraid that this comeback will not be successful because of what happened in their group, but it turns out to be their most successful one by having a whopping 7 music show wins in their entire promotions. If you have the time, please react to their April 3 Inkigayo goodbye stage where they recreate their childhood photos as their outfits for their performance.

I loved the discussion about concepts vs. identity in k-pop - though I’ve been interested in k-pop for many years, I could never pinpoint where my disconnect was with A LOT of groups out there, but I think y’all have given me some insight! my favorite group is Red Velvet, and while on a surface level it’s because I enjoy their music, I also realize now it’s due to them always feeling authentic in their presentation, no matter the risks they take or the concepts they try. (not to make this about them, just a thought I had while listening to their conversation!) regardless, I rarely comment, but I always enjoy your content and discourse. thank you! ~

I love the discussion that is being had here. I think this is why I either end up enjoying kpop groups or disliking/unstanning etc. There are groups that do and don't do the "mask"/new concept per comeback that I won't name names, but I will say the groups Stray Kids, ATEEZ, Everglow and *especially* Blackpink, I've ALWAYS felt that musically, they could harken their comebacks to their core identity. It just feels genuine from these groups. Wow. Thank you for putting it into words for me.

The member that was missing was Soojin, the Main Dancer. She was kicked out of the group and company due to some b*llying allegations that were later proven false. By the time they were proven false, it was too late since she had already been kicked out. She was the sexy blonde girl with the soft honey voice from Oh My God. Edit: Yuqi's solo music was pop-rock and her aesthetic is usually what you just saw in this music video. It's not that they are trying to be rock. Its that they are trying to emulate the energy that the member Yuqi (pink hair) usually emulates. She's cute but she's always been a tomboy that wears plaid and things like that. In the past, (G)I-DLE would always go for Soojin and Soyeon's aesthetic. But they tried something different. That's why, when watching the music video and looking at Yuqi, you can feel like she's a natural at this whereas Soyeon, Shuhua, Minnie, and ESPECIALLY Miyeon don't fit this concept.

the interesting thing is that Soyeon was part on a Survival show and she suffered a lot from mean comments calling her ugly, fat and etc, so she tackles those rebellious ideas on some of her songs. she did in "Lion" and also on "Tomboy". Also, i was really skeptical about the reason that she would call her group a "tomboy" on this song but then it came "it's neither a man nor woman. Just me IDLE" and I got completely SOLD!

Dizz is totally right. In the recent years of kpop i realised that kpop is really just about image, but lacks IDENTITY. Zak talked about how the rock element kind of confused him because of the change of how g idle previously their style was but this is what kpop is all about. Kpop is about concept change, a group will comeback with a cute concept, cute clothing, dance and singing, next concept they are hard edge, edgy style, dancing and singing, next concept is sexy, I mean in kpop you hardly see the same concept or style stay the same. But in Idle's case they are a different group now with the just the 5 members, so I think they are taking a different direction, in music and style, they are reinventing themselves now as a basically a different group with the members they have now, and as a fan I'm glad , I mean we love Soojin and miss her but now it's time to support Idle as they move ahead from the past and to something new and greater. And with this comeback they are slaving, especially in the charts and winning all those awards.

For example TS, she's been recreating her music in every album she made like 1989 is very different from Reputation, and Reputation to Lover and Lover to Folklore/Evermore. If artists don't change concepts, they will be irrelevant because people were starving in something new.

its interesting you bring about "identity" in kpop on THIS song/mv because THATS what its is EXACTLY about. TOMBOY is about them breaking the norm as a "girl group". people often associate the word tomboy with a girl dressing like a boy basically. but this song not just lyrically but also VERY MUCH visually showcase that they can be girly girls in their dressing styles or looks but are STILL tomboys because its about the ATTITUDE. its NOT about any aesthetic or any other shit. (as you may know the "G" in their name stands for Girls and they have repeatedly and very "in your face"-ly either slashed out or straight up left out the G) This comeback was very important for them as a group because it was them rebranding themselves while also making a statement that they will never die (I Never Die is the album's name) after an extremely hard year for all the members and the fans. One of their members (Soojin) was kicked out of the group and the company after a STUPID scandal over MIDDLE SCHOOL bullying case that had NO basis or evidence. This song, the mv, the album, THE ENTIRE COMEBACK was EVERYTHING. im so proud of all SIX of them really. 🔥 great reaction btw missed munroe she would have absolutely LOVED this.

I’ve been a Kpop fan since 2012/2013 now. And what Dizz and Zak said was totally correct. That’s probably why I’ve found it difficult to enjoy some groups. I figured I was just being old and picky. But no it’s this. On the upside though, some of the new emerging groups have given me hope. Groups like Purple Kiss, Billie, Aespa and IVE are slowly building that niche sound and aesthetic that sets them apart from the rest.

Loved the convo! Now that we’re in 4th gen kpop, I can’t imagine how hard it is to establish an identity since it feels like everything’s been done before. Maybe that’s why groups are switching concepts so drastically. Recently one of the groups I’ve been following, Weeekly, switched up their concept from bright to edgy and I was very disappointed. I think a lot of these kpop groups are gonna do this and fail in the long run.

Eh, I don't think Tomboy is that different than when Britney switched it up and basically did her version of I Can't Get No Satisfaction, which I'm sure plenty of people criticized as well for I think obvious reasons. I get that it can be confusing when groups do wildly different concepts, or maybe it even seems fake, cringe, etc... I wouldn't look too deep into it, it's a bonus when there's deeper meaning or more creative control from the members, but I personally think that puts too much expectations for the genre. Although in the case of (G)I-DLE, they actually do have a fair amount of control, and I think this style is coming directly from them. It doesn't bother me regardless, I've been into kpop since 2008 and I guess I just see them as performers taking on various concepts... no different than the background dancers that may not have much choice as far as who they are performing with...? But it's not anyone's fault if they don't buy into it, I wasn't into Tomboy on my first listen, but it really grew on me. It bothered me at first that they're supposed Tomboys, but look still look super feminine, but being a Tomboy doesn't mean you can't look however you want, either. Also, it's not totally clear to me how far the concept of being a tomboy really goes in Korea, maybe it's more believable with women that still look very girly over there.

This was a very interesting discussion. It’s like a light bulb went off on me when DIZZ was talking groups not having their own “identity”. As someone who was born and raised in the West (America), I see how he used Destiny Child as an example. In KPop, as they have a completely different story of how they came together compared to Destiny Child (obviously 😂), hearing the differences made perfect sense. As Destiny Child was your generation, Fifth Harmony was my generation. When you started talking about DC, I immediately thought of 5H. How 5H came to be was through a music show competition. For that, that’s where I thought of a similarity in KPop (in a way-ish 🤷🏾‍♀️). When groups changes their concept for every comeback, sometimes I do get…not so much overwhelmed but idk the word for it. However, when groups changes their concepts for their comebacks but still have their main story behind it like the core values of what their group is, I become more interested. So like DIZZ said, Stray Kids does that perfectly. Ateez also does it right since they still keep their “pirate concept”. Dreamcatcher is also a good group. Same with Aespa. As I’m typing, I’m realizing that those are some groups where it keeps “Dizz’s interests”. I put that in quotes because you let us know the real tea on how you feel and I love that 😂 So really my question is, even though this generation of Kpop doesn’t spark your interests as much and you talked about how they constantly change their concepts, do you think if groups still continued to change concepts but it flowed better from the previous comeback, would that change your perspective? To make more sense, say if a group’s storyline is trying to find the light at the end of the tunnel. For every comeback, they would changed their concept because they wanted to show a different emotion of what it took to get there. But in the back of your mind, you know their main storyline. Would that keep your interest in the group? I’m really curious. Sorry for this long comment. Hope this made sense because it made sense in my head 😂 PS. You are so right about when they do hip hop or R&B concepts, that’s they have to dress like it. Cornrows, Dreads, long gold chain…Elements of Black people 😐

So I am extremely late to this reaction... I actually just want to say thank you Leah for getting rIVerse to react to this song. This has been G-Idles most successful comeback to date and you guys are correct Soojin is missing. Unfortunately due to a bullying controversy, Soojin was removed from Idle and Cube as a whole. Her contract was terminated and now Idle is a team of 5. Soyeon does write Idle's albums usually. They are a self-producing group and are possibly the greatest of the new era. Soyeon's star power makes me think she is a new era HyunA. Also, HyunA and Soyeon are both from cube. Although HyunA is now in Pnation they know each other and the rapping style is inspired by HyunA. But yes this song has won so many accolades and I am proud of them. Also, I want to mention to Dizz in particular, that I also struggle to digest the newer generations' music because it is so concept heavy, and an Idol group's Identity is never clear because of this. Personally I still stand by the second generation because each group had a different style and genre of kpop and it was never concept heavy. They have authenticity. Obviously, we will see elements of black culture in kpop as that is the essence of Kpop if you ask me. The music was very very honest. Bigbang, 4minute, 2ne1, girls generation, kara, 2pm, super junior, b2st, bap, mblaq, vixx. You can tell these groups apart effortlessly.

I don't know, for me I love and appreciate so many genres and find that at different parts of my life or events going on around me a different mood or theme or aesthetic suits me and my feelings on a matter. If you scroll chronologically through my playlist I could clearly tell you what was going on in my life based on the genre my music became and the songs I added and played in heavy rotation. I think kpop stylists and companies lean into those differences in a song and makes it an entire concept to obviously help marketing and attention which is a side effect of capitalism but also has it's own joy imo because some people love aesthetics and fashion and makeup and dance as artforms as well. I think conceptualizing music and art within expectations of what is real music or sincere or fake is super limiting and disregards so many elements of the human experience. Also I'm pretty sure that I heard that Soyeon purposely wrote songs and concepts to suit different members personalities which is a whole other element of how can you narrow down a group with multiple people, particularly when several participate in the creative process into one set musical perspective? I think there is a lot of room to move and change and develop over time.

I think I agree. The Stans think you’re saying they’re like terrible or something but sometimes concepts don’t fit other members that well. It’s a difference in what American music values and what Korean music values. It’s just different. And sometimes they don’t match cross culturally
