The Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, also known simply as the Rio Grande, was an American Class I railway that began as a narrow-gauge line from Denver, Colorado, in 1870. Its primary purpose was to serve as a transcontinental bridge line between Denver and Salt Lake City, Utah, and it was a major source of coal and mineral traffic throughout its existence. The Rio Grande was known for its mountain railroading, with a motto of "Through the Rockies, not around them" and later "Main line through the Rockies." The D&RGW operated the highest mainline in the United States, with Tennessee Pass exceeding 10,200 feet above sea level.
