In this video I talk a bit about RJD2 and reveal where the main sample from his 2004 track "Someone's Second Kiss" comes from. I also do my best to reconstruct the drums live on my drum kit.

Wow… Deadringer …. In no particular order but albums like these just throw out so many different emotions and images at any moment of the day one of these song could be the biggest standout . June, cut out to FL, chicken bone circuit, the proxy …. All amazing. The album is amazing.

Since we last spoke. The way Iced lightning begins always has such a powerful impact and a great song, it sends images of aviation to me. Intro just a dope introduction. One day , making the day longer….. beautiful beautiful

Great choices! I feel like it's underappreciated just how solid this album is.

Bells are from Buzzy Linhart - End Song, vocals are from Maxayn - Bail Out. Check facebook group "Sample Spotters", look up "RJD2 list".

The only thing I love more than your storytelling on the history of music is watching you play the instruments yourself.

It's amazing what a good drummer or drum programmer can do to a song!

That was really cool to see you play the drum part on a kit. Great channel, just discovered and subbed. I have a request, the Avalanches -2 Hearts in 3/4 Time.

Great track! I'll look in to putting this one together. I've had to put off a few recently because of a few important samples still being unknown, so we'll see.

I love RJD2, my favorite track from him would be 2 More Dead with this incredible trumpet section or obviously Ghostwriter Thanks for this video 👍

Wow, so great you did a video on this. I love this track so much!!! Favourite RJ track, so I almost got goosebumps when I saw you doing a video on this. I've dug into remaking this track myself a while ago, remixing it even. Need to try to find those files again. Oh yeah, here's something for ya . Second Kiss Intro sample is Buzzy Linhart - End Song, Vocal sample is Maxayn - Bail Out. Other RJ favourites I have is probably Chicken-Bone Circuit off Deadringer, that's a special one. Title-track from Since we last spoke. 30 Grand Palace off his new record.

Wow, this is an incredible comment! Thank you for the information. I might have to go back and do a quick proper deconstruction of Second Kiss. How did you find that info? I am very impressed. Great selections too. Chicken bone has some great drum programming, very RJD2. That 70's soul/funk drumming is just on another level. It relied on the sound and tone of the drums and the drum rooms, which was so heavily influence by the excellent drummers of the time.

@@KarlBoltzmann Du-bruit / The-breaks / Sample Spotters etc. Bail Out I found myself. Yeah, really on another level. 100% agreed with you. Maybe you aren't aware of the track there either? Check out Mongo Santamaria - Cold Sweat at 4:34 ish.

Enjoyed taking in this video, I know RJD2 and listened to a lot of music on Pandora around 10 years ago, including this song and all the usual suspects from Deadringer. The drum line is sensational and highlights ghost notes. For me the strong open hat on the 3, followed by the strong open hat on the next bar ~3:15 hits a sort of 'call and response' groove that I really enjoy personally. I also love the way the beat turns around in combination with the dreamy disjointed keyboard arpeggio ~5:41. Favourites from this album turned out to be difficult. Listened to the album a few dozen times. Every song is kind of texturally eclectic and hard to compare against the last. Other than this track, I would say Clean Living is my pick. I think it had an overall smoothness in the sound design, which for me contrasted against most other songs on the album.

Great analysis! You are spot on with the drums. It's amazing how a drum beat, sampled, programmed, played or otherwise can be the musical detail that takes a track to the next level. The ghost notes, the general mix of the beat and attention to detail in Someone's Second Kiss is outstanding. Clean Living is a great track. The automated distortion on the hats is an interesting idea.

Yes Karl!!!! Appreciate you making a vid on rjd2, one of my favourite dj's. Great choice for the song aswell. The record has all sorts of great songs like someone's second kiss, besides that I love: 1976 and Clean living. From Deadringer I always loved Ghost Writer and Smoke & Mirrors. From the album The third hand I always loved Work it out and gerenally love instrumentals by Rjd2.

Great choices! Clean Living and Smoke & Mirrors are right up there for me too. It can be difficult to appreciate just how difficult it was to make sampled music sound this good back in the 90s early 2000s. The time and dedication that a lot of these artists put into their creations really shows in how listenable and enjoyable it still is today.

hey! I'm a beginner composer and let me tell you, your material has been one of the MOST USEFUL I've ever seen ! thank you so much! I was wondering if I could by any chance suggest a deconstruction on UNKLE's song "Unreal"? i'm very interested in that one ! i want to make trip hop for my next project, and your material has been helping me a lot. it's incredible how much you can do with so many samples ! thank you so much !

That's great to hear! I'm so glad that my videos have helped you. Most people probably don't understand just how much manipulation/cutting/sound design is done to recorded instruments or sampled loops in music production. A lot of these same techniques can be used to create interesting and new sounds no matter what genre of music you're composing. To answer your other question, I am currently working on Unreal! There is more work that needs to be done, but it is close so keep an eye out.

Well I dont quite remember most of the songs from his prior albums but I do have a fav from his recent album The Fun Ones. High Street Will Never Die I just like how unconventional the progression system is unlike the traditional verse hook verse of most beats. Not sure how long will it take for me to be as good as he is or as good as Blockhead for that matter.Or any other alternative/indie hip hop producer Samples should be be made easier to find so other producers can repurpose them and I like how you host your channel by introducing us to knew music.I actually plan to listen to Chris Rea now

This album is definitely my favourite, but he's got some great material. Love the drum samples he used for this track.
