Here's the best way to get this head razor sharp:l.facebook.com...
RMS Gear is known for making an excellent 2 blade single bevel head, the Cutthroat. Now they've come out with a brand new 3 blade head. Let's see how it performs.
I have a new test for edge sharpness and edge retention, using the Edge on Up Sharpness Tester. I test it out of the box and then again after Penetration Test 1, to see the edge retention. I also have a different test for flight--shooting one field point and two broadheads at 40 yds to see how well they group. And then I have a new overall Lusk Grade that I assign to each head--they receive anywhere between Zero and Ten Golden Arrows.
I have also picked up a new sponsor with my top recommendation for Broadhead Sharpening. staysharpguide... The support I get for that has helped me improve my channel.
Here is my sharpness scoring scale, using the Edge on Up Sharpness Testing Machine:
First of all, what are some common scores for other edges? Here are some examples:
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge takes approx 375 grams of pressure to break the wire.
A utility razor blade takes approx 200 grams to break the wire.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
701-800 gr: 4
801-900 gr: 3
901-1000 gr: 2
1001-1100 gr: 1
1101+ gr: 0
Edge Retention: Sharpness difference after Penetration Test 1:
10 minus 1 point for every 50 grams of sharpness difference. For example, if the initial sharpness was 400 gr of pressure and the sharpness after Penetration Test 1 was 450, the head would receive a 9 for Edge Retention Score.

I wish we would have seen the holes made on the steel plate. They looked like a great size chunk out of it. Out of all the broad heads you’ve done over the years that I’ve watched this one looks to be the toughest and most durable that you’ve ever tested.’
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures Месяц назад
Yeah, I’ve refined my testing quite a bit since I tested this head. It is certainly a good one. The durability of head is based on several factors: the quality of the steel, the hardening process of the steel, The composition of the steel, and the geometry of the Broadhead. This one is great in all those areas. There are some others that are just as tough or even tougher than this. The VPA omega with bleeders is just outstanding. I cannot remember being that durable before. I just posted that video last Sunday.

Thanks Kelli. Well, the 60 degree bevels make it optimal for field sharpening, but the curved blades make it a bit more challenging.

That's one mean bone buster in a good heavy arrow set up. Size and shape looks a lot like an old Zwickey? head from years ago. Seems like it was a spot welded together head. Another good review.

Haha. So many great choices, right? Hard to go wrong. The Annihilator XL and Ozcut both did very well in my testing--I prefer a larger hole than the Ann XL gives, but they're all solid heads.

I’m using the VPA 3 blade. I like how easy it is to resharpen. What are your thoughts on the VPA 3 blade vs Cutthroat?
@fifthof1398
@fifthof1398 3 года назад
Pretty sure VPA manufacturers both those heads
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 3 года назад
They use a bit different steel. Both are high carbon, but the Cutthroats are 41L40 tool steel--a bit more resistant to impact. I did a test on the VPA 3 blade vented head last year; you can check out how it did in that test. I prefer non vented heads, wherever possible. And the tip on the Cutthroat is quite a bit more durable. I'd say the VPA is easier to sharpen cause it's slightly softer steel and the blades are not curved--but both are 60 degree blades so can be laid flat on a stone and sharpen two edges at once. The Stay Sharp Guide 344 will make either one much sharper.
@sambradley5981
@sambradley5981 2 года назад
I shot a cutthroat 3 blade through a cooler and an old refrigerator a few times the last time I couldn't pull it out and broke my arrow. Used a hammer and a screwdriver to beat it through to the other side. Used a 6 inch mill basted file and a ceramic rod to resharpen it and it only took a few minutes to get it scary sharp. And I know scary sharp I've used my pocket knife to shave to win a bet. It's a bad ass broadhead I've not taken any game with it yet but I'm pretty sure if I do my job it will too. I'm a picky bastard and will not recommend anything I don't have 100% confidence in I don't care what it is.

I love that tip. Convex must be for bone blasting unlike the opposite like the Valkyrie Jag that can move around dense bone, best of both worlds. I wonder if the Valkyrie wheel would sharpen it? By the way, is that GOAT arrow 34" long cuz it's a 75-100 spine & has to be longer unless u r drawing 125 lbs?
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 3 года назад
Yeah, it's super long--but the spine charts don't mean much in super heavy weight arrow set ups.

Does Stay Sharp make a sharpening system for 3 blade heads?
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 3 года назад
Yeah, that's what I talked about in this video--and put the link for in the Description. I also demonstrated it in the vid I did recently of the Annihilator XL. It's called the 344, cause it takes a 3 blade solid head and changes the bevel from 60 degrees to 44 degrees, making it about 40% sharper.

Maybe a review between fletching jigs would be informative. Specifically between a bitzenberger and a very similar less expensive grayling. I hear many times a year that a good jig has to be expensive when that’s not the case at all from much experience.

Two things: A. The blades are convex due to the type of cut that a broadhead makes going through an animal. It is a draw cut/slice as opposed to a push cut. This is why a samauri sword is shaped the way it is - it is used to make draw cuts and slices and the curved edge presents more surface area to make cutting contact with the material. B. The type of cut a broadhead makes is also why your new sharpness test is not that indicative of a broadhead's true sharpness. The tester is geared toward testing a push cut, not a draw cut. It will do great testing a razor blade or a knife being used in a push cut, but that's not how broadheads work. Perhaps if you hold the broadhead at an angle to simulate a slice, it would yield more accurate results.
@caninphx
@caninphx 3 года назад
Or have a scale under a drill press/etc and measure the force to push the Broadhead thru a medium.
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 3 года назад
Thanks for the feedback. I understand the difference in cutting. But at 280+ fps, everything pretty much blasts thru as opposed to true slicing. That's what was revealed when Slick Trick made the first (?) short blade head. I've found that out of high speed compound bows, for the most part, the shorter the head, the less blade surface area, the deeper the penetration. When someone pushes a head thru hide and measures the pressure it takes to penetrate, interesting as that is, it has nothing to do with how penetration works at high speeds. I've even dulled heads with a file and they still penetrate almost exactly the same as super sharp ones. It's really interesting. The sharper edge may cut tissue more effectively as it passes thru, but it has little to do with penetration. Edge integrity, or the lack of edge chatter, makes a much bigger difference in penetration than out of the box sharpness. The nicks in the blades increase the friction/resistance & impede the penetration. The test I do is just for edge sharpness alone and not blade angle. If there is an advantage to the blade angle then it should show up in the penetration testing...there was not an advantage in that area with this head over other 3 blade 60 degree heads.
@sambradley5981
@sambradley5981 2 года назад
@@LuskArcheryAdventures that's fine for 280+ fps but there are a whole lot of people shooting in the 240+260 fps and less range as well . A sharp BH trump's speed any day so when you slow it down it's gonna make a difference

How does this one stack up against the Bishop holy trinity in your view?
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 3 года назад
They're both great heads. The advantage of the Bishop is the S7 tool steel is about 3 times more resistant to impact than the Cutthroat 41L40. And the blades are about 30% thicker. I also prefer the shorter profile of the Bishop--it is more forgiving in flight due to that and should do better in penetration for the same reason. But I do like the stout chisel tip of the Cutthroat.
