This 1965 is a wonderful example of an extremely well-cared-for survivor. We are very excited for it to go to a new caretaker who (hopefully) cherishes and drives this car for many years to come.
Shirley C. Burden purchased the car new from Competition Motors but rarely drove it before gifting the car to its second owner, Arturo Lyon. For years, we had been under the impression that Shirley C. Burden was Arturo’s mother. As it turns out- Shirley C. Burden was the great-grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, a highly respected fine-art photographer and writer. As mentioned in the video, the car was kept in the family when the car was gifted to Arturo Lyon, son of Mr. Burden's second wife.
Arturo Lyon was living in Maryland in the late 1960s and into the early 1970s, and by the early 1970s, he rarely drove a car and felt that he no longer had a need for it. Its third owner, Barry August, purchased the car from the original owner’s son in February of 1974 with 17,600 miles for $4,600. He drove, meticulously cared for, and loved the car for 39 years before finally offering it for sale in 2012. Attached is a photo of Barry with the car in 2012 when it was purchased by the Ingram Collection.
During its time in the Ingram Collection, it was featured on the Porsche Cars North America 50th 911 Anniversary stand and was voted by Porsche Cars of North America as the oldest Porsche 911 sold in the US as part of its 60th-anniversary celebration. It was also a featured car in the “Porsche Unexpected: Discoveries in Collecting” book before joining another truly exceptional collection in Massachusetts.
