So I wanna clear something up... I think a lot of people are confusing the term "tracks" with "lip-syncing". When I say "there are a lot of vocal tracks", I'm not saying Su-Metal is lip-syncing. She has a great voice and is clearly a talented singer, but most touring bands use vocal tracks to beef up the sound and to make it sound better in a live setting. It's not cheating. It's not fake. And it's not an exclusive thing to BabyMetal. TONS of bands do this on tour nowadays, and I've seen it with my own eyes on tour MANY times. TL;DR The term "tracks" does not mean "lip syncing".

In this video, Su is 16 years old performing at the world famous Budokan, where you have to be invited to perform there. She has such a commanding presence that you forget that she is a tiny girl on that stage, at just 5 feet,1inch (155cm) tall. She may look like a tiny mortal, but she is a metal goddess. The amazing thing about the Kami Band is they have been with Babymetal since 2012. Appearing with 3 little girls could have destroyed their reputations. They obviously saw their professionalism and commitment at such an early age 14yrs and 15yrs old.

This song Rondo of Nightmare, is one of the heavier songs that Babymetal has, both musically and lyrically. Lyrically, it's about fighting depression, and how its like a never ending nightmare some times. Every concert, the band has a solo that they do, to give the performers a break. It's usually before a fast song with a more complicated rhythm.

You definitely have to check out Road of Resistance-live in Japan next from these guy. Dragon force wrote the guitar parts and is probably one of my favorite songs from them.

Since you enjoyed this one. Lets go in another direction. "Sis Anger" Features the other two girls while Su takes a break. And is probably one of if not THE hardest song in their library to date.

Although Leda Cygnus is playing an ESP at this show, and he has a couple of ESP custom models, he is better known for his signature line of Strandberg guitars. You'll often see guitarist Takayoshi Ohmura playing his signature ESP Snapper 7 (Pink-chan). Since Kami Band guitarist Mikio Fujioka passed away in early 2018, Ohmura often plays one of the guitars he inherited from his great friend. BTW, Su was still only 16 at this performance. Her birthday is in December, which throws some people off. They have piano tracks, and backing harmonies, but she sings everything live that can be sung live.

Happy birthday Chase - great choice. Tank, you got one of your facts wrong - Su was only 16 when they played the Budokan - they were the youngest female band to ever headline there (Yui and Moa were 14) and they sold it out two nights running. Backing track has additional instruments (piano etc) and additional vocals (growls screams etc) plus some harmonies Su will have pre-recorded ... her lead vocals are all live. There are specific parts in certain songs that are on the backing track (eg when she is behind the mask in 'Megitsune') but those are obvious. In the softer section here she was using a technique of holding the mic against her nose and singing across it to get the nasal effect like she was singing through a tube. She spoke recently in an interview about how she moves in the recording studio in order to get the right breathing techniques to be able to sing each song live as perfectly as she can while still doing often strenuous choreo. She even said about using different breathing techniques for venues at altitude. She is a much more talented vocalist than many people can possibly imagine.

Look at Boh, Leda, and Ohmura are positioned around the Queen, as if to say anyone want to mess with Babymetal will have to go through them first. This is a high level of trust, and you can really feel that in their songs and performances. They fully believe in her, and she know she can rely to them. Just how many excellent musicians fails due to the issue of trust... PS: Chase Carneson is nothing short than a legend (for me at least ^^).

It's funny. On paper, Babymetal is everything I hate. I could go down the list. I don't like 'gimmicks', I don't like giant high budget 'music acts' where the front people are merely the face of a conglomerate of people behind the scenes. I like raw actual bands performing with the minimal of production support, meaning the tracks and whatnot. And I'm not even mentioning the whole cute meets raging aspect. What may have started off as a gimmick has evolved into something way way beyond that. But, the totality of what they do is so overwhelming and so insane and improbable. Every single aspect and every single person involved with that huge budget 'thing' that is Babymetal is executing at such a ridiculously high level. The composers, the choreographer, the stage designer, the lighting designer, the costumer, the visual artists with the computer animation, the story telling, and last, but definitely not least, Su-Metal and Moa-Metal and their absolute commitment to what they do. Man, it's really something special.

"when it started I thought I was listening to Meshuggah" I believe this song is a tribute to Bleed, not just the heavy drums but especially the visuals and the theatricals at this particular concert. The guys with their facepaint, the light effects resembling lightnings, Su standing high above on a platform, even some of her choreography (her hand moves) is taken straight from the Bleed MV.

You know, revisiting this after seeing it a whole bunch of times, something really struck me differently: For the Kami band to roll out and put in those absolute god-tier instrumental antics and for her to come out and put on a performance good enough that she isn't overshadowed by the jaw-droppers that the band just served, and to do so at 17 years old is a SPECIAL level of performance that a lot of adult musicians would struggle with.

As far as "tracks" are concerned... of course there are vocal, effect, and more being pumped through the house speakers. I would love to see Babymetal add a couple keyboards and have Moa sing more. Her singing on Headbanger is good and the crowd loves it.

I really enjoy getting to see someone who has a lot of experience working with bands in tour break down some of this stuff, really informative and super entertaining. Probably one of their most entertaining and memorable performances would be BABYMETAL DEATH Legend 1997, and is absolutely worth checking out.

You're correct about the vocal tracks. I don't think they're necessarily a lot, but they can be quite loud in the recorded concerts. The one part she wasn't singing was the second pre-chorus, and it's only for the dramatic effect. Suzuka, in my opinion, is one of the best *live* vocalists in metal. It's something a lot of reactors seem to not realize while reacting to their live videos cause there's so much going on. As a fan who listens to their albums and all that, seeing Su sing live is just jaw-dropping every single time! The tracks don't make a big difference. I think they're not as audible when you see them live. I'm usually even more amazed when watching fan-cams cause of that power of her vocals without the loud double or whatever. You should check out 'Road of Resistance Live In Japan'. This one features some of the best instrumental work by Babymetal, and you'll also see Su's vocal stability when she's doing more choreography with Yui and Moa. Also a sidenote, someone said to you that Yui and Moa never sing live. I just wanna say this is very untrue. You'll hear some vocals by them in Road of Resistance. Have a good one!

Yeeeeah another Babymetal reaction !! I've been listening to metal for more than 10 years and I can say that Babymetal has become one of my favorite bands of all time, many people say, how can it work? And it's simple for me, because they are excellent in everything they do, the Kami band are really great musicians, the girls are extraordinary in their vocie, performance and energy that they give in the shows and well ... everything that Babymetal does in general is brilliant because they have always taken the project seriously

Only just discovered this band through reactions. Reading the wikipedia page, they were supposedly formed as a manufactured idol group and then became independent in 2013. Pretty cool. It seems like they've already exceeded the average lifespan of a manufactured girl band so hopefully they keep going strong.

For more Babymetal: Megitsune is a great song that blends some distinctive Japanese instrumentation into its sound in a cool way. Oh Majina is super fun, kinda dumb song that features vocals from Joakim from Sabaton. Road to Resistance has guitar parts written by Dragonforce and is great if that's a sound you like. Honestly, pretty much every song on their latest album Metal Galaxy is a lot of fun. There's also a really fun video of them playing Painkiller and Breaking the Law with Rob Halford from a few years back that's well worth a watch.

I can not wait for Sis Anger (the dark heavy music) and Road of Resistance (for the song, as it is my favorite, but also the production which is insane) on this channel. Love the reaction! And happy birthday chase!

Really glad you did this one man, and watching you is exactly what happened to me when I discovered this band. I mean, like everyone else I went and saw "gimme chocolate" first and thought it was dumb, but once I checked out some more stuff from them I was hooked. You just don't expect a band called Babymetal to have such amazing, god-tier musicians. Great vid as always man!

They do use a lot of tracks. The synths and the quiet Vox part right after the bridge. They have this dude called the manipulator to do the triggering. They often use VOX tracks for the lead singers vocal harmonies and of course all the growls and the screaming. Megitsune relies heavily on BTs since the topline is coming from a synth that are supported by the guitars. I do have to say Babymetal is one of those bands that get how to mix backing tracks live. Right amount separation from the Live sound but still thickens up the FOH. Fun Fact: Ted Jensen mastered this show for the dvd release. The guy who mastered Deftones Around the Fur, American Idiot, and Hotel California. They take their mixes seriously.

I mean there's not a lot of gear to review, but after Band-Maid and Babymetal I can't help myself and throw the following song into the ring for a reaction video: "Ladybaby - Nippon Manju" xD

BOH is just fucking incredible. Not sure how much vocal tracks they use. I mean that quiet part after the breakdown most definitely is prerecordered I'd think, and Yui's and Moa's vocals are also heavily backed because they are more focusing on the dancing than the vocals. But Su's performances are pretty live I'd think. Babymetal is just amazing. I saw them live three times now. The great thing is the variety in their sound. They go from Nordic Folk to Djent to Power Metal to Bollywood sounding stuff to Polyphia to ballads and whatever else in just a single album. Never gets boring.

Great reaction. The amount of tracked vocals is a common point of contention with BABYMETAL and some fans can get really defensive about it. She is a great vocalist for sure, she is definitely singing live and they are definitely using backing tracks. Let's just say that what comes from her mic, what goes out to the live PA, and what ends up in the final mix that gets released can be very different things. Probably varies a lot from song to song and from venue to venue.

Yup...never gets old seeing people blown away by this act....it's called 'The BABYMETAL effect'....Here's the thing...it's not just music or a cool light show....it's theater and storytelling.....The Japanese culture has a history with this stuff....now the rest of the world is catching on....

The reason Su-Metal is such a good singer is she has vocal cords that can adapt perfectly to any genre of music.

Happy birthday, Chase, and thank you for recommending this! I wonder why these musicians don't seem to have reached international fame. At least I have never heard of them before I got into BABYMETAL, and as a guitarist I'm usually not completely in the dark. I might put Ohmura (who played the second solo) on a level with the likes of John Petrucci. I'm a tiny bit disappointed that the song didn't drive Su's vocals home for you, it seems. I thought it might. I think she does a fantastic job, and I prefer this a lot over growls or the "usual" Metal voices. Her voice sits nicely on top of the Metal groundwork, she cuts through the mix perfectly, and I find her voice very pleasing. It sounds like you are more in the stage of "being able to tolerate her voice". I would take a bet that her vocals in this one are live, except for possibly the calm part in the middle with the blue lighting. I had always been convinced that that part was played from a backing track, but it was actually another reactor (or two of them independently) who stated that she might actually be doing this live, and tilting the mic upwards and moving it a bit towards her nose to achieve that thinner, more nasal sound live. I'm not denying that they are using backing tracks. The additional instruments that are not on stage are from a track, and I'm pretty sure that there are additional guitars sometimes as well. There are also vocal harmonies to Su's lead vocals for some songs, although I don't think I heard them in this performance. And Moa and Yui's backing vocals are (sadly) often lipsynced, but I guess that's excusable given the energy they are displaying with their dancing all throughout the show. And of course these official video releases have been through post production, where intonation errors have been addressed. I guess every artist does that nowadays. But if you watch a fancam clip, you'll notice that Su's vocals are usually remarkably stable, especially considering that she is doing some dancing as well. Edit: Just remembered something: There's actually a rip of her mic signal of this song available on the internet. Probably not from this performance, though.

The reaction to the bass solo is the same in every reaction video -- just dumbstruck, jaw dropping awe!

I was really looking forward to you getting to this performance and I was not disappointed. I don't think anything in this performance is backing track for her except for the nasal part where she's bent over in a position that is not all supportive of singing, but they definitely use post-production for all of their pro-shot videos to smooth things out a little. I'm sure it sounded a bit different if you were actually at that performance.

Su-metal sometimes uses a vocal technique called nasal resonance And can give her voice an almost like chorus effect And she has great control over it it's very rare for vocalists to use it in the West And only a few vocalists actually use it in Japan also when she sings and the way she controls her breathing through mouth and through nostrils The sound bounces around in the nasal cavity and comes out also in an old interview she had talked about learning a new vocal technique And how it gave her voice this unique sound

Yes and the frightening aspect is, that was the first time, she realy showed the Kami Banf that she can go through any noise level, they can produce. Her current level works more like, i don't care. If I go there I go there.

They do use tracks for some background instruments, and they use a click track, they sort of have to with all the choreography. They sometimes use effects for an effect, but in this song that breakdown is largely Su. She is compressing her vocal folds by tilting her neck forward, she tilts the mic so she is singing into the bottom of it, and the mic is against her nose so she is picking up an airy sound through her nasal passages. It's an interesting technique. She is sixteen here by the way. Her birthday is in late December.

Great reaction! It's always cool to see the different perspectives people have. As you have seen already, there are tracks for the different instruments. I know some people want to call tracks phoney but what are they gonna do? Hire a piano player for one song? As far as the vocals, Su sings almost everything live. The part where she was singing quietly is arguably prerecorded but she is 100% singing on the rest of the song. That becomes obvious if you watch unedited fan cam videos and you can hear the imperfections in her voice. She does have tracks of her own voice in the background for harmony but she is always singing.

Their concept may appear so uncommon to the metal scene in the Western culture, but musically and technical-wise they’re no doubt one of the greatest performers! I bet you’ll like the Babymetal Death live Legend 1997; you’ll thank me later...

The Kami Band usually get a share of the Spotlight in all of BMs live shows. I've watched multiple DVDs of their live shows and there is always a time for the band to show off their stuff. Unfortunately a lot it get blocked on RU-vid when people post them.
