Man preach it! I’ve been saying that my whole life and people just look at me stupid 😂 I’ll never understand spending $200,000-$300,000 on a car just to drive 1/4 mile then win $2000 never understood that.

This is why I'm glad the speed bug never bit me. I get my thrills hunting old cars and old parts. I don't care much about selling them but I sure love finding them and either bringing them home myself, or finding them a home.

I've actually been a race car fabricator building drag cars for over thirty years and I've seen it first hand time and time again. I've been lucky, never been bit by the Speedtardation bug..... more dollars than sense, and they'll spend it all for a win light. Bless their hearts.........

I remember getting my wake up to the cost a little over 20 years ago. A couple in our circle showed up to the track with their new car. That day it blew the engine. They had taken out a second mortgage on the house to finance that car. A couple of weeks later they are back out with a new engine to sort out the car. Then a couple of weeks later they roll it and total loss. After a night in the hospital they had dinner with a group of us. They had taken out a third mortgage to get that engine. It was going to take them 30 years to pay off the last couple of months of racing if all went well. They didn't know what they were going to do and warned us not to go that route. After that night several of us cut way back then most stopped after a couple more years. A few went on to work for large teams but most just go to the cruises and shows now. After I did the math it was quite a shock how much I was spending.

The Twister!!!! Someone I knew, YEARS ago, built a car named after that one! I had no idea it was yall! My dad was in the final voyage of that car, rolled many times in a side ditch, but he walked away! I was too young, at that time, to remember what car they had built. Probably sometime around 87’-88’

You are spot on about being a professional Drag Racer, Rob. It will chew you up and spit you out. On top of that, no refunds. Both Muldowney and Garlits paid a heavy price to be "Legends" of the sport, but footnotes of history. You made the right career choice because 🐇is good 🐇is wise❗

Telling the truth, cars, car flipping, and car racing is one of the biggest addictions and I love it. I ruined myself in high school buying a car I couldn’t afford the maintenance on just so I could beat people in races. That’s why I tell people now if you’re gonna do this you can’t half ass it. You’re either in or you’re out, you can’t want speed and reliability.

That one pic looks like greer dragway. Where i use to hold my step dads air cleaner while he run . I hated at the time being the kid holding a dang holley air cleaner. But now I look back and I know why he made me hold it.

I just recently sold a car that two people showed up at the same time for. I wanted to thank you for this gem of a one liner...after watching them argue with each other about who was gonna buy it, I told them "yall can fight it out, or f@ck it out. I don't care. But dust yourselves off, and pay me when you're done. " I went and grabbed a cold snack and waited. Thank you sincerely for that gem. BTW I sold said car for $350 more than I wanted lol.

"For what?" Bragging rights. In the series my family ran in (20+ years ago now, I won't pretend to be any sort of expert haha!), it was tradition to donate any and all prize money either back to the racing association or to a local-to-the-track charity, and to do it right there from the podium so you didn't take home a single red penny even if you won it all that day. And yep, the generation who got out of it made a hell of a profit selling the cars and all of the accoutrements.

I found for the thrill of "racing" autocross to be the cheapest form of it. It's either "run what ya brung" or get an extra set of wheels and throw some good summer tires or 200 tread wear track tires on and push your car to the limit. So for either 40-50 bucks a "race" or like 1k-1500 in wheels and tire plus the cost of the "race" you can have some fun in your daily or weekend fun car. Some people even bring their dedicated road track cars out and run autocross. I've seen some pretty cool cars out on track from varius porsches and a Mercedes amg gtr to a McLaren and a R35 GTR

My uncle probably had a dozen GM pickups from the late 60s through the late 90s. They were farm trucks, no frills except AC. He'd drive them until they'd been broken so many times that they couldn't repair the repairs anymore.

Luckily I learned at an early age that there is rarely any money in racing. Tinkering around to make your daily a little better is one thing, but the money it takes to win on a professional level is outrageous. Unless you are one of the lucky few, you were just lighting money on fire. Appreciate the video.

Even racing go carts just on a dirt track is the same way. I have a good friend who has $5k - $8k in 1 cart alone and he has 3 all together but they are racing for $60, $70 ... that's $60.00 prize money for 1 night of racing if you win. Remote control racing is pretty much the same only you have $500-$2k in your car and extra parts and scales .. yes scales just like full size car racing but for RC's. Doesn't matter what you race it's all for the love of it and if you're EXTREMELY lucky can you actually get paid to race or make $. Most of that goes back into the car or whatever to make it faster.

He’s got a point. A very good point. Drugs might kill your body and it is costly but racing or any competitive sport will drain you. Everyone in competitive sports/hobbies has a sponsor(s) or a business that backs that team/individual. I don’t have any of the money I had in high school or probably the year after since I got into racing rc trucks and recently I got into competitive airsoft. I got recruited to play for a team but I turned down the offer because I don’t have the financial support or time to do it. I stop racing and I got a couple nice rc’s that I use once every great while and I have two nice airsoft guns. One pistol one rifle. Both hpa both have incredibly nice parts but I play once a month because I can’t justify spending $30 in gas driving each way another $25 to play plus all the bbs clothes and maintenance. I can’t do that every week. In short find something you’re passionate about that’s healthy that doesn’t drain your wallet and keeps your going. Stay active and stay motivated🤘🏻🤘🏻

Lucky life isn't just about money Rob....I appreciate your outlook but i enjoy it, it keeps me sane and keeps me mentally sharp as well. You talk about being so smart and such a "winner" at 20, which i guess i wasn't...But hey, i cant ever recall my wife fúcking her boss, getting pregnant and then pretending the kid was mine.....

racing 98% of the time costs way more then you get out of it money wise... but if you are very wealthy then you can spend a relatively normal about money & let it make you happy

G'day Rob, know what your talking about, grew up with a father that raced cars myself, he spent way too much money on the damn things to, I love all cars, but I'll never own a race car, Rj in Oz

Back in the early 2000s if you were in something like Comp Eliminator, you could go around the country doing races every week and the prize for first might be $30,000. not a bad gig if you were successful and had an income that allowed that travel during racing season. But times change and I don't even know about pandemic times now but by 2016 times had changed and I doubt there would be even $30k in a prize pool to split between EVERY CLASS. Why would they? attendances were down and their just wasn't enough ROI for the big sponsors. So alot of really good racecars got parked because, unless you have a good enough income or a sponsorship gravytrain that can offset the cost of racing you are doing it for the love of it these days, yeah there's a few classes that still play exception to the rule like Top Fuel, Funny Cars, Pro stock but even they have an impending sense of doom of whats going to happen soon and they just don't have the dynamic pool of drivers going that they had a decade or two ago.

I think that's why alot of guys are getting away from Traditional NHRA style drag racing and going more into street style drag or pop up drag races building budget race cars out of 80s cutlasses and Impalas with junkyard LS motors

also i seen a 75yr old man in gasser built small block from hell come out to a street race & it actually held its own a few rounds & did decent but ypu could tell it couldn't go no faster Safely

I do alright but I would say I'm far from rich. I've had a whipple and some carbon fiber parts ready to order for a bit to put on my 20 Mustang GT. I always have a hell of time racing on the street or on the track but the reason why I haven't pulled the trigger yes i keep asking myself why the hell am I going to spend 10 grand to be faster than someone in a hellcat talking shit at the gas station? It is fun taking money from cocky people but it isn't worth the diet of top ramen to do it.
