One thing I like about this show is that it shows not only the friendship of the "Merry Men" (and Marion), but also, how they still have their distinct personalities and conflicts which have to be worked out from time to time. It has the most interesting version of Scarlet of all Robin Hood stories because of how dark/angry and "scarlet" he is as a person, plus, it helped they had a world class actor playing him.

"YOU THOUGHT, GISBORNE? WHAT SHAME I WASN'T THERE!" The Sheriff's has the best banter ever!

Thanks for reacting to this show. I think you're the only person on RU-vid to ever do a reaction to this show. This was a childhood favourite of mine (even if some of tge villains terrified me as a kid) and my appreciation for it has only become better with time. Between the characters, stories, atmosphere, and spellbinding soundtrack I think this is a forgotten masterpiece of TV that more people should check out.

I wonder how Tuck knew what a pumpkin was?

To be historically accurate I suppose they could have used cabbage or turnip but Tuck saying 'my head feels like a cabbage' wouldn't have worked, innit?

Always enjoyed Ray Winstone's portrayal of Will Scarlet in this series. You can see why he's the on in this series who went onto success in Hollywood. Although Michael Praed also did land a role in the US drama series Dynasty after this.

David de Keyser who played Joshua de Talmont has 138 credits on IMDB including a lot of voiceover work such as being the voice of Draco in the James Bond film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", Tabernacle in "Zardoz" and Excalibur in "Excalibur". However, neither IMDB nor his Wikipedia entry mention that he was also the voice of General Thorias in the French TV series "Le Chevalier Tempête" which was often shown on the BBC on Saturday mornings and during the school holidays from the late 1960s to the early 1980s as "The Flashing Blade". And as I've mentioned "Excalibur", I'll repeat that Robert Addie (Sir Guy of Gisbourne) also played Mordred in "Excalibur".

I think what I took from this as a little kid was that even "good guys" can get things wrong but by acknowledging and trying to make right their mistakes they can still be heroes. Can I just say that I adore the Sheriff? Classic scenery chewing!

A serious anachronism. The line, "My head feels like a pumpkin." shoild be met with, "What's a pumpkin?" The Americas and their squashes had not yet been discovered.

I think this or Lord of the Trees are my favourite episodes of RoS. This has many magical moments: the Sheriff playing 'Aren't you, Gisburne?' to the crowd; Will and Gisburne both going rogue; and Nasir saying 'Shalom aleichem' to a Jewish person. A perfect 50 minutes of telly. That pumpkin line makes me cringe every time, though...

This is a particularly strong episode for character development, with dissension opening up both between the outlaws and the Sheriff and Gisburne. Will falling out with Robin is no great surprise, given how combustible he is, but it is good to see them brought back together and for Robin and the outlaws generally to find renewed purpose. Gisburne continues to develop in an interesting fashion, noticeably more assertive with the Sheriff here than he was in the first series, but stunningly lacking in self awareness while attempting to woo Sarah; the Sheriff is fantastically villainous as always. The episode is also a valuable reminder of the recurring persecution medieval Jews faced, not just in England but across Europe. Eventually, in 1290, King Edward I would expel Jews from England completely, and it would not be until 1656 that they were readmitted (by Oliver Cromwell).

One of my favourite episodes of RoS. I love Sarah's reaction to Gisburne, always reminds me of Pride and Prejudice somehow. 🤔 The locations and the way they were shot made this series something special, as do the costumes which are beautiful. Nothing's forgotten.

The Young Boy and Girl are both the Children of the late actress "Maureen Lipman"

I don't know about her reputation for punctuality, but, as far as I know, Maureen Lipman is not yet deceased.

Maureen Lipman is not dead. She is alive and well and loudly supporting genocide. Deeply disappointing to her ex-fans.

An episode that touches my heartstrings for the sensitive portrayal of the Jewish family. This episode made me realize 3 religions are represented among the Merry Men. Thank you for saying 'Shalom Aleichem', Nasir ❤

An excellent making of "Robin of Sherwood" documentary was made in 2002 and it's on on RU-vid. However, don't watch it until you reach Series 3 because it includes a huge spoiler. However, Richard Sharp who directed every episode in Series 1 says in said documentary that he left at the end of Series 1 because he'd run out of ways to kill Norman soldiers. Correction: His name was Ian Sharp, not Richard Sharp. See below.

You would think with a name like that he would be an expert, a Chosen Director as it were :)

I love this episode and always thought there was some fizzing chemistry between Katharine Levy and Mark Ryan... a lovely little hint of what might have been for these characters.

To me the actors who played the Sherriff and Gisborne were the best versions of those characters put on film!

You've got a good knowledge of areas of history, as have many other contributors here. I've learned a few things from you all about Richard, John etc. Btw, are you still looking for A Matter of Life and Death? If so, it was retitled in the US as Stairway to Heaven, if that helps.

Oh I know all about the retitling and it cannot be found legally anywhere on streaming that I can find. I try again every few months in my quest - no luck

Well I think we all know how to deal with Sir Guy by now. Just send a pretty girl his way and he'll be so easily distracted that his brain will turn to mush! It's his Achilles heel for sure! And naturally I'm concerned about the Will situation. He'd better find more creative ways of channeling that anger or all of Robin's band will be in serious trouble!

A bit more of Ivanhoe finds its way into this story. I think I would read that again if I hadn't lost my copy of the book somewhere along the way. I wonder if I would still find Rebecca the most interesting character in the novel. Likewise, Steven Runciman's history of the Crusades - I think he makes mention in there of the people of England celebrating with some "enthusiastic persecution of the Jews," during the time Of Richard I.

I haven’t met anyone yet who has read the book and not thought Rebecca was the most interesting character, so most likely yes!
