All caught up. Love being part of this watching party 🥰 I'm so glad you're discovering this gem of a series, and we get to re-experience it all over again through your eyes! To your "Whoever wrote this, they get it!": Richard Carpenter, the writer of the series, was Pagan. Making a little occult exercise, the Merry Men can be pictured as a constellation of the 7 planet qualities: Robin (moon, clairvoyance), Much (sun, innocence), Marian (Mercury, quick-wittedness), Will Scarlet (Mars, passion, war), Little John (Jupiter, steadfast, true), Friar Tuck (Venus, love), Nasir (Saturn, death).

Anthony Valentine always gave good villain. Another atmospheric episode, always like Herne appearances, and The Sheriff being very Sheriffy.

Mystical mash-up. Gemma Craven was a familiar face on stage and screen at that time with some notable appearances to her credit.

Michael Praed is wonderful in this. Very other worldly and somewhat creepy. Yes, Kip Carpenter got it (though you and I may be referring to different "its"😅). He was a terrific, very accomplished writer with a deep knowledge of the period he was dealing with. The 2-parters in this series are some of the best episodes. You are going to love the next one. Fun fact: Gemma Craven (Lilith) and Clive Mantle (Little John) both had birthdays in the last few days. 🥂

One of my favourite episodes such a great story and effects just a brilliant take on an old legend. Even 40 years later they still stand up to todays standards 😀❤

This episode is fantastically directed, succeeding admirably in conjuring up a strong atmosphere of mysticism and menace. You are right that Belleme was too powerful a villain not to resurrect, and Anthony Valentine delivers another chilling performance, while Gemma Craven successfully gets across a sense of controlled fanaticism as Lilith. Nice acting from the outlaws too, as you really feel their worry about what has happened to Robin, and I like the fact that the tensions between Gisburne and the Sheriff continue here. Although Gisburne murdering Ralph is entirely predictable, the cold blooded nature of it, and the great height from which Ralph falls, make it perhaps the most chilling aspect of the episode. The ending is a little anti-climactic, but I can understand why they didn't want to kill off Belleme again. Incidentally, I wouldn't feel guilty about watching the two parts of the next story back to back, as they were originally broadcast as one feature length episode anyway...

As a kid I did NOT pick up on any of the symbolism in this episode, but I loved it anyway. I got that Bad Lady (Lilith) was casting spells and that Bad Man (Belleme) was seeking revenge for his own death. I also loved the that the Merry Men had to deal with such mundane tasks. I always loved the sense that the Sheriff Of Nottingham knew that he was a villain and enjoyed it.

Indeed, the Sheriff does the equivalent of wearing shades and a “deal with it” shirt, only in this time period!

Just when I was beginning to enjoy the interactions between Gisburne and Ralph, they killed old Ralphie boy off! Perhaps that actor didn't wish to continue playing that character? Ralph was too trusting of Gisburne. He should have known what was going to happen! But I reckon if they had to get rid of the character, they had to do it somehow. At least we get the Baron back and he is a great villain.

I detected gay vibes between Gisburne and Ralph, or was that just me 🤔
