I’ve heard the Robin Williams stuff explained this way: the man was constantly doing improv and crowd work, and when you’re doing that as often as him, pulling rapid fire from your subconscious/instincts, you’re bound to unintentionally pull out something you heard another comic say. As far as I know he was never known to have a stolen bit in any written material.

Yeah, I've always cut comedians a lot of slack on joke stealing. I make a lot of wisecracks myself, and honestly, there's times when I have no idea if I'm coming up with something original or unconsciously repeating something I've heard. But then again, I don't make any money off jokes. I might look at it differently if I did.

I get tired of people on the net who get so offended just because someone has a different view of things than I do. It just seems like most people get so triggered by the slightest thing these days. When it shouldn't bother anyone if someone out there just has a different opinion than your own. People could get along better if they'd just let little differences not bother them so much. Just don't say anything bad about Taylor Swift or the Swifties will come at you.😅 I think Robin might be far game but not Taylor.😉 In the end though honestly, I just wish we could be more accepting of each other.🙂

@@darkblade3897 every day I hear someone on a podcast say something I’ve thought tons of times to myself that I never thought anyone else would say or think. Yet they say exactly what I was thinking. Many times I’ve watched comedy specials where the comedian has said a joke or told a story I’ve literally thought of myself……. are they stealing from me or anyone else who had those same thoughts or jokes in their mind? Most jokes are fabrications of stories anyways. Just ask Sebastian, he’s admitted a lot of his material he claims his father did or said are stories and things he’s seen and heard around the neighborhood. Fun fact his dad wasn’t the guy who put the anti freeze on the bologna. It was a guy down the street. Should that guy sue Sebastian because he stole that idea from that guy and made it into a bit?

Robin Williams was on a lot of coke back in the day. Think of how fast he spoke and how quick his mind worked. I honestly doubt he was doing it purposely. He didn't do a lot of scripting even in his movies. He was always well known for add-libing while he worked. From all the stories I've heard, he was always a great guy and would apologize when he did something like this and try to make it right.

Robin did do this from time to time. Usually not too straight blatant theft. He was also known to frequently send a check to the comedian he borrowed from. I know, I know... It is rather silly to use a joke without asking THEN mail a check in the amount HE thinks it is worth Keep in mind this was almost fifty years ago, but the checks that I've read about were in the amount of fifty dollars. So there! Exactly NONE of this diminishes any respect I have for Robin. A kind, generous, caring man.

Second, he doesn't seem to understand or enjoy humor or comedy in others, he never seems to laugh or even smile, he's kind of a black hole for laughter and joy. Third, he comes across unbelievably smug, condescending, dismissive, curmudgeonly, cold, close-minded, ignorant, etc., etc. toward any viewpoint he doesnt't agree with. Eddie Burback does a great video about the ways in which Bill Maher sucks, I recommend checking it out if you'd like to hear further arguments on the subject.

No, Robin constantly improvised and occasionally wound up repeating jokes he heard somewhere else; upon learning that he had incidentally lifted a joke from someone, he issued an apology and wrote a check to reimburse them for the joke. This is mentioned in at least a few his biographies and he discussed it in interviews, too. Robin Williams never intentionally stole from another comedian. Period.

Robin like a lot of great comedians was ultra textbook ADHD, it was probably more of a seat-of-the-pants freedom of association thing and stuff would accidentally slip out he had roaming around in the back of his head and forgot where it came from. Robin riffing was funnier then 99% of comedians to be fair, he was the energiser bunny just throwing things and seeing what sticks. The idea that Robin Williams was some calculating sociopath/Machiavellian that some seemingly jealous comedians try to make him out to be is so hilarious. I heard this years ago about Robin Williams purposely hanging in his old Comedy clubs and stealing jokes used on his show. Pretty pathetic because Williams honed his skill there just like many other standup guys he knew? Richard Belzer said it happened to him a few times. Belzer's problem was that even though we all borrow material in our acts, once it's heard on television it's dead!

Some of you have never had jokes stolen and it shows. I went through a stage between 2015-18 where meme pages with millions of followers would steal my material and advertise over it, happened dozens of times. By the time it got to me writing a full show, half the people in the audience thought I’d stolen them from meme pages and not the other way around. Only problem is they get thousands of dollars per post and I barely scraped by, I ended up going back to a day job because nobody actually cares about joke theft. That’s why people like Robin get famous and you’ve probably never heard of most of the people he stole from. It’s often the best vultures who reach the top of any industry. People just can’t accept Robin was one because he was so likeable and talented in other areas of performance as well.

And you’ve never seen any of Robin Williams interviews where he openly addressed the subject, nor read any of the biographies written about the man, and it shows! If you had any knowledge about how Robin Williams handled alleged joke theft, you would know that he always issued an apology and a reimbursement check to anyone he incidentally lifted a joke from. It takes literally two seconds to just Google an interview, Robin never intentionally stole from anyone. I’m sorry that happened to you, though.

It's easy to pay someone for something wrong when you find out about it, so that it looks good if you eventually face any litigation -- but this is a creative field. You can't reimburse someone for their creative property. It doesn't work that way.

Robin wasn't doing it for legal reasons he genuinely felt guilty cos that's the kind of guy he was, he wore his heart on his sleeve. It's a shame more people both in this industry and in life weren't like him.

Not really comparable since the internet didn't exist when Robin was doing stand up in the late 70s early 80s so memes and all that trending bullshit didn't exist and everyone knows this was his drug period, he probably didn't even realise he was plagiarizing. I remember as a child seeing Don Rickles on the tonight show (back when it was still the tonight show) talk about how all the comedians stole each other’s jokes, that it was just part of the business. Of Course that was when comedy was pretty much all live shows and the jokes didn’t get the exposure they do today. I hate it when other people take credit for my work so I suppose I understand.
