I guess I should’ve taken this, the Watermelon Sandwich, the Sandwiches of Chicken Halibut, found a couple of other recipes and done a themed “unconventional sandwich week.” But, hindsight is 20/20 so here we are. From A New Book of Cookery of 1921, we’re making the Rochester Chocolate Sandwich. But don’t let the name fool you, the chocolate isn’t the filling. Also, I couldn’t find a reason why it was named for Rochester. Maybe they had a robust chocolate industry? Maybe it was just where the “sandwich” was created? Who knows ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I feel you when it comes to baking. I've been a cook my entire life and can make gourmet meals. But every time I try to bake, it looks like a four year old was the baker.

the paprika makes me think of going for a spiced mexican hot chocolate vibe with these. Some nice ancho chili powder and cinnamon might have been good in the filling.

I don't usually like fruit and chocolate together, but cherries are my favorite fruit chocolate combo. I could see making a big batch of Black Forest Rochester Sandwich cookies for the holidays, or when Mary and Dennis come by

What a fascinating recipe, I wonder if perhaps it's supposed to be sweet paprika, or smoked paprika, or regular paprika? Hungarians know there's big differences between the three....

I think(?) the cookies for these are supposed to very thin and rather small, like an Oreo. But I definitely wouldn't turn down that cherry one! Great job as always, and look forward to the next weird concoction!

Y'know, at first the paprika horrified me... then I gave it some thought, and yeah, that'd work - as long as you don't use *smoked* paprika. I think I'd personally swap it for cayenne, though; chocolate and spice go incredibly well together.

In culinary terms, few words excite me like "bacon" and "chocolate". Get in ma bellay! Now, if they'd just go ahead and start dipping the bacon in chocolate I'd be happy. Seriously though, I wonder how it would taste if you replaced the paprika with a pepper that is on the low end of "hmmm, I taste something a little spicy!" if maybe that would enhance the chocolate in particular since spicy goes good with chocolate.

Which Rochester is this from? I’m from Roc NY and have never in my life heard of this. It does however look like a different version of a half moon cookie which is a NY classic.
