I don't know why but I need to add this. The word hilarious is not inherently a negative thing . I think it's a funny little pistol. I never bad mouthed it. If you are taking the word hilarious as something negative, I apologize. Please take it in the way it was intended. If you watch the entire video, I did say I want to buy one. I would not say that if I did not like the pistol. I am no longer responding to people that ask me why I was being mean. I wasn't y'all just didn't watch the entire video and started typing first.
I own this firearm. I've put 300 rounds through it so far and have nothing bad to say about it. Cleaning is a breeze and I carry it every day along with 3 extra mags. Yes, I did say 3. My only "complaint" is that tenth round is a bit hard to seat without a mag loader. The porting in the barrel and slide does indeed assist with recoil and makes this pocket sized 1911 manageable. I recommend it to any full sized 1911 owner as a great carry gun.
@bailey9r it's not nece8any louder than my other sub compact guns. It's just quite wide in the grip and heavy. That's probably the only drawback. I absolutely love this thing, and highly recommend it to anyone who's interested. It takes the larger RIA mags for the FS Tac series, as well as some Para mags. I threw a skog band on the grip safety, painted the front sight, and carry a spare 20 rd mag with it. Super awesome setup.
When they first made these, they actually came with a fiber optic front sight, but they had problems melting and getting blown out because of the porting.
This is obviously a remake of the Para Ordinance Warthog, who made several models of the double-stack. I wanted to buy one 15 years ago, but with the $800 price tag, I had to be convinced of its build quality and reliability. After handling it at many different stores, not a single retailer had good things to say about it. Hopefully, RI has fixed all of the Para difficulties. BTW, with the short-barrel low velocities, hollow points are not likely to expand.
I think it does benefit to purchase a better recoil assembly than the one it comes with. But that's about the only negative thing I've read about them.
Exactly, warthog copy that holds 10instead of 12 or 14?,might be Great for somebody, but the lower velocity over the 5inch barrel, the sawed off chunky grip that prints, the 40 ounce loaded weight?and your only gaining 2 rounds ? Sig 365, over a lb. Lighter, holds, more, cheaper ammo, more reliable and easier to conceal.😂
@@jakebrake3000pickups have been around for over 100 years yet and not considered antiquated? It may look the same but I promise a 1911 from 1911 is much inferior to a modern day 1911a2. Everything from the metallurgy, production standards, machining, and ballistic understanding.
The recoil spring doesn't need to be changed every 500 rounds, it simply should be changed after the first 500 rounds. I don't entirely know why, but I assume it's because they put a different spring in the gun initially for break-in purposes. Also a note: the gun was initially supposed to have a fiber optic front sight, but the hot gas coming out of the ports were melting the sight.
I don't actually own any guns, but if it cycles fine, don't touch that shit!!! Change to another spring, and it won't cycle/feed properly. Put the original back in and it STILL won't cycle and you'll go bananas trying to fix it for the next 6 months! Finally you sell it cheap out of sheer frustration, the guy that buys it loves it because it works perfectly for HIM, and the new gun you bought to replace it with won't cycle worth a fuk either :) Note that buying the other gun back from the other guy doesn't work. Once you buy it back, it's not going to cycle for you--just him. It's the gun's way of letting you know that it's pissed at you for fcuking around with the recoil spring, and now you're the proud owner of TWO guns that won't cycle
My friend bought a " baby rock" .380 version of a 1911, brand new,had to send it back, nothing but ftf and fte. Got it back ,took it to the range. Now it seemed OK, till about the 3rd magazine . Still messed up ,now it was a fte or ftf about every 20 shots. He ended up trading it for a used pistol at Cabelas. The 40 year old makarov was twice the gun. Just saying not sure on their .45 1911's ,but not chancing it.
Wasn't the sell of Para to Remington one of the saddest things to ever happen in the gun world. They destroyed a excellent company. I wanted a 3.5" LDA for years and I kept writing Para asking them where they were. Little did I know it was probably lying Remington stiff answering my emails (literally years worth) saying "We are producing them they are everywhere " I was all over every online gun store and gun broker and Never found 1 new one
Just for kicks, I have a 1911 type double stack that i built 60 years ago, it has an AMT 7 inch slide and muzzle brake 15 rnds . Also, just for giggles, I built up my Rock Island in 38 Super, by changing barrels and recoil springs, it now includes: 38 Super, 9 by 19, 49 S&W, 7,63 Mauser (loaded to shorter OAL) and a 22LR conversion. I have been reloading for 70 years, including 20 year as a comercial (class 6) reloader. It's been a great time, lots of fun and no ammo shortages, EVER.
I just took mine to the range today. Shot very well. And was above the mark on accuracy I was expecting. I added the magazine extension/pinky rest to one of the mags and it made a massive difference. I’d buy again. Great little 10+1 carry gun.
Thanks for the comment. Saw this at one of my LGS today. I am intrigued...how is availability for aftermarket or RIA parts, ie grips, mags, etc? Extended mags available as well?
Well shit another 1911 I need to add to the collection. I'm still amazed at what you get on the rock islands for the money. I bought my 10mm 1911 from them because it's already had the parts i would have installed from factory. To this day the only unmodified gun in the safe.
I got a full size Rock Island 45 acp and I love it! This one is very interesting, double stack, 3.1 inch barrel 1911, 10 round chambered in 45 acp??? Really hilarious and I want one!
OK, well I like my full size 45 Rock Island as you have and I "have a need for it", just can't find a good holster for it, so was looking for a holster for it.@@golfgunsandcocktailschannel
@@matthewobrien2822 The slim is just a standard compact 1911? It takes 6 round magazines? If that's the case you don't need them to actually be "Para Ordnance" magazines, any 6 round 1911 mag should work, Mecgar makes good ones. You can also use any other size if you don't mind it sticking out the bottom.
I remember when Llama made the Mini Max .45, it had serious quality control promblems, but the ad was for a little bitty gun with a whole lot of great big bullets, great concept, I glad to see another attempt at this
Love the Rock Island 1911 series pistols. I own the hi cap model (14 rounds) 1911 like the para ord mentioned below in another comment. My favorites though are the TCM22 series 1911's and I hope that some day they will make a sub compact 1911 chambered in that round. Yes, I would (and probably will) purchase one of those mini 45's from RI. Great video, and I did subscribe.
That used shell is not for quality control. It's for your FFL to submit to the state, in some states, for ballistics tracking... And the manufacturer I think has one too.
I like how you brought our attention to the actual perpendicular through drilling of the barrel and of the ramp on the barrel. I was not aware of the effects of not having a ramp as part of the barrel.
Don’t get me wrong I’m not questioning your point. Rock Island does make a baby Rock in .380 acp. I’m just saying. I figure you knew this already though.
1911 Grip Screws aren't a slotted screw the way you usually think of them. The slot is actually dished, so you can use the rim of a .45ACP cartridge to unscrew them.
They made this to compete with Para Ordnance 1911 double stack Warthog. Para Ordnance made the first double stack 1911 45acp, the P14. Then made the P12 officer's size model, with flush 10 and 12 round mags that also took the 14 round mag. They even made a LDA model. LDA is Light Double Action.
Hello poor people learn to reload its worth the investment a day at the range is no less then a thousand rounds i cast my own and load my 45 acp has better accuracy then any factory ammo and its cheaper for me to shoot 45 then 22lr. Don't be intimidated by loading is easy and kinda fun! Go Dillon precision. If you can!
This is very refreshing to see. Since so many other gunmakers are crankin out almost nothing but 9mm, plastic fantastics and hyper priced 9mm calibered 1911's....that offer nothing that cant be obtained from less expensive designs.
Good on you! I'm retired military and used to run the shooting range. You are the first reviewer that I've seen that has ever done a safety check beforehand!
I have always liked how Rock Island and Ket Tec have had the balls to *modificate* firearms and put their own ideas out there. Not all of them have panned out or looked good, but I do believe Rock Island is onto something here. I'd love to see it shoot first, of course, before I give them my money, but I've carried subcompact 45's before (Xds 45) and have always liked them. Never had any issues whatsoever, including control. Those tiny 45's are not as difficult to shoot as some people might think. Very manageable.
No compensater necessary.... the ports take care of that. I LOVE MINE! Less muzzle rise than a SCCY 9mm. A dap of heat proof white header paint on the back of the front sight gives excellent sight picture. Just don't use Wolf ammo if you don't want to soot up the white paint, lol
I got my Wife one, now she has an M&P Shield EZ And This one, I own 4 Rock Island 45's and they are Just as Tight as my Kimber And my Cold Delta and Just as Accurate.
I own this. I bought it when it was first introduced. I flipped over a small version 1911. Mine unlike the one in the video Has a red front sight and it is not ported. I was very surprised at how accurate it is. I carry it. I find it heavy with 10 rounds. But its way easier to hide than my commander. Love the gun. If your on the fence because its small buy it. You wont be disappointed.
With slight modification a Pierce grip extension for the Para P10 Warthog will work on the Rock island magazine. Also with slight modification the Para P10 Warthog 13 round extended magazine will work. Hogue rubber grips for the Para will also work with a little material removal. Awesome little carry gun. RIA makes some great 1911 pistols, I've owned several in 9mm, 45 and the poor man's FN 5.7 the 22 TCM. Para ordnance also made some great 1911 pistols. The prices on the old used Para double stacks are continually increasing so Rock island has done a great job in filling that hicap 1911 void. Screw Remington. I have a Canadian made Para P14 limited in stainless that I will never sell. Awesome and accurate firepower. Learn to work on and tune your 1911, plenty of vids show you how to make your cheaper 1911 run like a 3 grand Wilson Combat. The RIA BBR gets 2 thumbs up from me.
I fully understood the word you use -hilarious, some people show their appreciation /approval/or bewitch via laughter and giggling or simply happy/merry just about anything.
I happen to like the Rock Island firearms They are very well-known and very well built and Extremely accurate as Well they also have a lifetime warranty! The only thing I would Recommend is instead of porting the barrel is toreplace it with a unsorted barrel and put a mussel Compensate on the barrel!!
I have a full size Tisas 1911A1 service special 45acp and I've ran about 200 rounds through it and right out of the box without a break in period ran hollow point ammo and fmj ammo with no problems whatsoever and still runs. 100% accurate sights are dead on. Very happy with this purchase. It reliable and runs every time with all the ammo that I've put through it. Also runs good not only with the 2 mags it came with but other brands as well. I like Rock Island but I also love my Tisas it's very dependable.
This is a common misconception; the smaller the gun, the more recoil, and the harder to maintain proper grip. Compact should be the smallest genre a smaller framed individual should look for to have a comfortable, safe experience.
This thing is a howitzer with a double stacked magazine that's pretty hefty. Don't let this give the wrong impression-it's weight makes it shoot the same with a full or nearly empty magazine and I was impressed with my accuracy the first time shooting mine. The ported barrel keeps you on target, recoil is tamed with it's heavy steel make, plus it's just plain cool seeing flames leap out of the ports in lower light. I chuckle every time I disassemble for cleaning and see the ridiculously short barrel in which the bore size is nearly a quarter of the barrel length.
Had a Warthog. Lotta heat in a small package. Paddle safety. Chrome "blunderbuss" barrel. Looked mean in the mirror. Easy to carry, light, and hence hard to handle.
Once i found out what type of metal the Rock Island Pistols are made out of vs say a Springfield 1911, i realized i wasn't going to be able to shoot +p out of it too often.
I've got the RIA 1911 A FS Tact II 10MM. It's a beast, super tight fit, extremely accurate 40.2 oz. bull barrel will take +P rounds all day long, including Buffalo Bore ammo. This is a man's gun, i have yet to find a woman that can rack it. Love to to shoot it, very smooth trigger, very accurate, low recoil because of the weight and bull barrel, and just a really good looking gun with VZ G10 grips on it.
Given that there's porting right next to base of the front sight, a fiber optic front sight might not be the best option...gases could easily discolor the fiber after a few hundred rounds. And hopefully somebody in the aftermarket community will come up with a mag base plate that will A) give you a thickened bottom and/or spur for additional purchase, and B) a couple of extra rounds in the bargain.
Pearce grips have finger extensions for it. I ordered 4. Likely to buy a 5th. As to adding rounds.... I have 3 para P 12 mags. Will have my local gunsmith modify them for my BBR 3.10
Kinda reminds me of S&W M&P 45 acp, compact 45s are becoming popular, nobody would think its a COMPACT 45 till you see that big muzzle flash... love my compact 45😍
Originally Para Ordnance did it with the WartHog, but Freedom Group bought and killed Para to sell Para Guns as Remongton. That went as well as you can imagine
The Jimmini Show lol.. I know dude, ive seen all kinds on mini’s, but never a fat little tank like this. Before i ever got to shoot it had already thought of trading off. I waited tho (covid bs set in) and thinking it’s physics didn’t really add up for a good shooter like the full size grand dad. But when i did finally get it out to shoot it i was very surprised . Still a tad more hop ti it but very controllable. You just gotta get use to the feel of its fat lil butt in your hand like a new girl. Hope you got to shoot it.
Gotcha. Yeah I will more than likely buy one when they become available. I have shot small frame glock 10mm, so I assume it should feel about the same.
allan brown ive been using an TX 1836 holster i bought for a Makarov but it fits it too. Its a lil chunky tho. I wear it wih a IWB in the kidney area. I have caught myself having to pull my belt to another hole.
This is the first 45 cal I'm considering...My CCW is a sig p365...I like using Underwood Extreme Defender as my carry ammo...Their 45 cal round looks wicked for sure...This old guy does want a 45 cal at least for home protection and possibly CCW...
My EDC is a sig p365. I just bought this gun and ran a couple hundred rounds through it today. I ordered a alien wear holster for it. This well soon be my EDC.
I carry the BBR 3.10 during the summer. It's actually an awesome little gun. A LOT of snap to it, because it's the size of a G26, but chambered in .45, and for my winter EDC, a RIA M1911 A1 FS Tac, We the people holster, deep FBI cant at 430. Both have never failed me, the crappiest part of both is searching for the ammo. But I've gotten pretty known around my local Turner's, so I get the call whenever the loads arrive.
I will almost always pick the a hammer fired gun over a striker fire. comparing it to the g30 I wish they would have made the barrel the same or close to the g30 barrel length 3.78". I would like to see RI come out with a 4.25" with a 12-14rd 45acp.
May be the lack of high viz front sight is due to the fact that the gun is compensated. I guess the temperature of those gases would just destroy the material of any high visibility front sight
Possibly. But a tritium sight with a white surround would hold up. It's more the fact that Rock island doesn't put many high viz front sights on their pistols.
I put my hands on one of these a couple weeks ago, and first impressions are positive. I haven't fired one but I think could make a good option as a backup carry or option for a woman to carry in a purse. Rock Island makes a nice weapon that is very affordable.
It was not a “new” concept, or idea, as it already existed. Para Ordnance also made these same style pistols, known as the “Warthog” which were great as well. They also made a single stack version, known as the “Expert Carry” which were basically officers size slides on full size frames. Going back further in Para Ordnance history, they also had “hamerless” versions, which were known as the “LDA” (Light Double Action) Meaning they were “DAO” (Double Action Only) pistols with triggers that felt MUCH closer to the weight of “SAO” (Single Action Only) pistols. Then there were also the “high capacity” full size versions (P14-45 and P18-9) Para Ordnance was a VERY innovative company at one time.
I'd really like to shoot it too, but keep in mind there are revolvers with one and three quarter inch barrels that can actually shoot a 45 ACP. The Smith and Wesson 325PD is a 2.5 in barrel revolver that can fire a 45 acp 230gr hollow point at around 800 fps. Step to some 185 gr or 165 gr, and you get back in the 900+ fps range. There's a website called ballistics by the inch, and they actually have muzzle velocities for ammunition and firearms. It's really cool you should check it out
Para fixed the recoil spring issue with a dual captive spring, maybe one from a warthog or colt double agent would work. Only thing I don't like about them is the proprietary sights RIA fixed that.
This one has two springs as well. One is captive and non replaceable, the bigger one is the one that should be changed every 500 rounds. I would assume that the warthog spring should work since the Rock island is basically a copy of the paral warthog
