The line in the song "You're Celtic, United, but baby I've decided you're the best team I've ever seen." refers to his 2 favorite domestic soccer teams,Glasgow Celtic(Scottish) and Manchester United(English)....His No 1 soccer team was the National Scotland team...His father was Scottish and his mother English and Rod was born in London....I think the song is a veiled reference to the Swedish actress Britt Ekland (although he mentions a Dutch lady in the song) because he'd just been in a relationship with her around the time the song was written.

I have always liked Rod Stewart. First heard him in 1969 as a no name singer on a Jeff Beck Album. In 1970 Rod debuted his first Big solo hit song Maggie Mae. I was 14 years old back then. He continued to pump out hits all through the 70s and into the 80s. My favorite song of his is called "Every Picture Tells A story." Man oh man, now that's a song!

This was one of my mother's favorite songs. She pointed out when he says "You're a comedy" the violin actually trills a laugh. Because of her, I look for things things like that in music and it always makes me think of her. Rod Stewart, Brian Adams and Sting did a song together that shows their similar voice styles called "All for Love" for The Three Musketeers soundtrack, if you're interested.

@missjoshemmett
@missjoshemmett 4 года назад
I worked for Rod, my dear. I first heard him in 1967 in Shotgun Express before he developed the rasp. I was in England at the time dating Peter who was in SE, too. The next time I saw him was in 1969 at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit with Jeff Beck in the Jeff Beck Group. I did some work for Jeff and his manager but really didn't talk to Rod and Ronnie Wood that much. Jeff Beck Group played their last gig at the Grande (Gran-dee) after many appearances there. I took a friend to the Eastown Theater in Detroit to see The Faces and she was crazy about Rod, so I took her backstage. Rod saw me and told his manager to hire us. We worked for them until 1972. They were in Detroit often as we loved them so much. Yes, Rod does have a Motown voice. He perfected it. I loved everything about Motown. He knew every song and met as many as he could looking like a starry-eyed teenager! One night, in the hotel after a show at Cobo Arena in Detroit, there was a party. Rod was on the end of the bed watching a live Motown night on the TV. He totally ignored everyone. In the early days, he even did the Motown Shuffle when he sang, before developing his own style. By the way, Rod was up to be a professional soccer player but chose singing instead. In hotel parking lots, we would get out the ball and we all off in a rousing game. He would kick soccer balls into the audience during concerts. Thus the mention of this girl loving the wrong team, but he loved her anyway. (Yes, he did eventually own his own team.) But that was a cute little reference because the British are such avid fans (and it is called football everywhere but the USA, it is older than our football, and is actually played with the feet...no hands).

Ok, it's been a year, but I just saw this because I was searching for Rod songs. He started off singing Howlin' Wolf and a lot of black singers. I first found him in 1968 when I was 15. He did "I ain't superstitious" with Jeff Beck and I almost fell off my chair. He also fronted the Faces, I believe one of the best groups in rock. The father of 8 kids and on good terms with all of his exes. The man is now 75 and still going strong. He has some of the best pipes in the business. You looked confused as most people do about this song. In his autobiography, he explains that as a lifelong football (soccer) fan and living the life of a top of his game rock star, he was rushing to get to his dad's house to watch the finals. His girlfriend at the time, Britt Eklund, didn't want him to leave and couldn't understand his love of the game. Inevitably, people review Hot Legs which is not in the upper 10 of the songs I love. But if you do, you have to check out the concert version with Tina Turner. Did I mention he's also a very respectable songwriter? Check out Forever Young.

The following are the first few Rod Stewart solo LP’s: An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down (1969); The Rod Stewart Album (1969); Gasoline Alley (1970); Every Picture Tells a Story (1971); Never a Dull Moment (1972). Faces were an English rock band formed in 1969 by members of Small Faces after lead singer/guitarist Steve Marriott left that group to form Humble Pie. The remaining Small Faces-Ian McLagan (keyboards), Ronnie Lane (bass guitar, vocals), and Kenney Jones (drums and percussion)-were joined by Ronnie Wood (guitar) and Rod Stewart (lead vocals), both from the Jeff Beck Group, and the new line-up was renamed Faces.They released several albums in that same timeframe. They include: First Step (1970); Long Player (1971); A Nod Is As Good As a Wink... to a Blind Horse (1971). I consider his earlier work to be his best. It’s true English rock and roll, raw and elemental.
