"Rowdy" Roddy Piper is one of the most legendary professional wrestlers of all time. Back in 1983, Piper had just come off the infamous dog collar match vs Greg Valentine at the 1st ever Starrcade.
Back in 1982 for Georgia Championship Wrestling, promos were taped for another dog collar match but this time Roddy Piper vs Buzz Sawyer. Piper ends up showing late to an event so he was fired and the match never took place. Roddy later went to Vince McMahon and WWF by 1984, the rest is history.

I could listen to Piper's stories ALL DAY AND NIGHT...!!! This man was simply iconic a legend before his time. He had it all "stick skills" galore, and the talent too match it. RIP Hot Rod you are VERY much missed.

I was born in 1969. Grew up in NJ. Became a wrestling fan at age 5 in 1974 and got a chance to watch the greatest 10 year period ever from 1974-1983. We only had the WWF until we got cable tv in 1978. Then all of a sudden we got Southwest Wrestling on USA Network Saturday mornings 10am-11am, California Wrestling in Spanish on UHF 41 Saturday afternoons 1pm-2pm, Georgia Championship Wrestling on TBS Saturdays 6:05-8:05, WWF Wrestling on channel 9 Saturday midnight, and Florida Championship Wrestling on UHF channel 47 on Tuesday nights 2am-3am. Plus probably 2-3 Weston/Apter magazines every week on the newsstand for a $1 each. Plus we still believed it was real. If I was born 10 years later I would have missed the whole thing. But I was born just in time and I'll never forget how terrific it was. It's hard to believe it's already 40 years later and we have to watch all our heroes die. So many are gone now. When I was young I never thought that one day this would happen. It's like looking at our own near future. But I was there. I saw all the greats. Nobody can ever take that away from us. They took away our sport that we loved, but they can't take away our memories.

Piper could switch at will, when needed. But against Flair, Hogan, Buddy Rose and the Guerreros? Greaaaaat heel! He's the greatest WWE ever had! But all time? Tully does edge him out because Tully was so rarely a face in his career and you didn't really cheer Tully. You hated his guts!! He made you naturally hate him!

Piper was fired from Georgia Championship Wrestling in 1982 (not 1983). He was fired because he was no-showing, showing up late for matches and doing less than great matches when he did show up. And also because his bad habits had gotten completely out of control. He was brought back into Georgia within a couple months.

Eddie Thomas I saw that he told piper he gave him a choice he could leave then and he won’t tell tge cops what’s in his bag, or he could stay, work get paid but he couldn’t guaranty him he would have a job in wrestling when he got out of prison
