Rowdy Roddy Piper on why he refused to job to Hulk Hogan and how Vince McMahon reacted before MTV War to Settle the Score. Full shoot ➤ TitleMatchNetwork.com
"Rowdy" Roddy Piper is one of the most legendary professional wrestlers of all time. After establishing himself as a draw in the Los Angeles, North Carolina and Portland territories, Piper found himself as the hottest heel on the WWF roster.
When MTV War to Settle the Score was announced, Piper was slated to lose to Hulk Hogan cleanly. Roddy went to Vince McMahon and flat out refused to do the job for Hogan, knowing that if he lost that would essentially end his WWF run. Learn about the issues this caused between Piper, McMahon & Hulk Hogan. Also find out why Cindy Lauper was so instrumental in the entire event taking place. War to Settle the Score is the precursor to Wrestlemania.

When you look back and realize that of all the Wrestling talent in the late 70s/early 80s, the top three wrestlers who made the first 3 Wrestlemanias a success were Hogan, Piper and Andre. When you consider Piper's size in relation to the other two, it puts into perspective just how good Piper was. He had the total package. Ric Flair was the only other wrestler who could match Roddy for improvisation.

@DoppelgangerShockwave 3 года назад
Roddy answered the question. Roddy didn't do a job for Hogan because Roddy was afraid he'd be out of a job in the WWF. He was afraid if Hogan beat him on TV that would be the end of his wrestling career because he was already in trouble with the NWA, particularly down south in the Crockett and Barnett areas, having been blackballed by Barnett for an incident Roddy was involved in outside of wrestling. Roddy wanted to be a super famous wrestler, so he knew the right trajectory for that was to not let Hogan defeat him on TV.

@@Jffeeney3rd Wrestling fans always want their favorite to win and never consider the business. In 84-90 it was best business to keep the belt on Hogan, they lost money with Randy and Warrior having the belt. Keeping Hogan the champ was the right thing for business, it made for easier and more profitable marketing to attract new fans. As a hardcore wrestling fan a Piper champion one for a couple of months sounds great but when it comes to the dollars they eventually made the right decision. Fans need to really consider where Hogan took wrestling and what he meant in those years. This was the 80's and people wanted the all american hero to sustain and that is what they did.

The whole point of Piper not doing the job to Hogan was to keep his heat, and make Wrestlemania hotter. It was big, and Piper thought losing would diminish that. Having your hottest heel do a clean job to your Uber face in their first match is lazy creative. I’m with Piper on this. I do think they should have blown off the Hogan - Piper feud at WM 2 or shortly after. Before Piper went on vaca and returned as a face. He wouldn’t of lost any status because the face turn was a reset. It might have made for a better redemptive story arc (heel humbled, rethinks and changes his ways some).

As much as I love Roddy and respect him, I hated the fact that he never did the job to anyone he was feuding with back in the 80s. Hogan, Orndorff, Snuka, JYD, anyone. With all of the high-level heel tactics he was doing, he knows that eventually, the heel has to lose to the face in the end. And he hardly ever let himself be pinned. The Snuka feud should have ended with him getting beaten, and then both wrestlers move on to something else. As I have heard people tell it, Roddy was extremely paranoid about protecting his status, and to him, losing matches would cause him to lose status.

You make a good point about him refusing to do jobs for others. I'm not a big Hogan fan, but honestly I think he should have done the job for him back then as he was the face of the company during those years and really it wouldn't have killed his status to drop a match to him. Piper and Hogan are alike in that kind of protective paranoid behavior. I think Hogan used much more backstage politics than Piper which means he was sneaker . Piper was just more difficult to work with, but at least up front about it. At least that is my thinking. Maybe none of that is true.

@@parlowderick See my comment further above. Piper actually did do the job for Hogan later in '85. It's just the PPV he did it at doesn't get much attention anymore, so the "blow-off" didn't either. And Piper's mindset was also largely coming from a guy with more experience in the territories: "We can get the champ (or the face) over. But you can't bury me in the process. This show-down has more mileage that way." It's why so many NWA main events went "broadway" instead of someone getting pinned. That way, no one looked weak (although you do that enough times, people will eventually stop believing the face can win--hence the creation of the even more infuriating "Dusty Finish" where the good guy looks like he wins, but doesn't really win).

I agree with you, but wins and losses were taken a lot more seriously back then. Most fans were marks and truly believed in wins and losses and Piper jobbing to Hogan over and over would do nothing for his character.

@@parlowderick Pay better attention. He knew how WWF ran their heels. Just look at what happened to every other monster they created to face off with Hogan. Build them up to look invincible, Hogan beats them like chumps after no selling their big move, they are lucky to work in the mid card afterward. Andre, Savage and Piper are the only people Hogan feuded with that didn't get tossed aside afterward. Even then... Andre was already half retired. Savage was never able to get out of Hogan's shadow his entire career because Hogan actively worked to keep him down. Piper was never allowed back into the main event scene despite being one of the best heels they've ever had. Piper and Hogan could have had an ongoing feud that lasted years. Piper would have jobbed for Hogan if he knew he's get his heat back and Hogan would return the favor later. But he knew it wouldn't happen. If he agreed to job, he'd be finished. Plus, like he said, he was never a very big guy. Losing clean could kill his career.

He's all over the place here. More importantly, was it really true that jobbing for Hogan that night was even discussed? It was supposed to be a build for Wrestlemania and the only way to set up the WM1 main event was the schmoz ending that took place at the War To Settle The Score. How do they set up that match if Piper jobs?

Piper was right not to job at the War as it built up to Wrestlemania. Having Orndorff get beat at WM1 was the right move as it was the natural progression in telling the story. Everything after that should have been a build up to Hogan\Piper main eventing Wrestlemania 2 with Hogan finally getting the win, but instead we got King Kong Bundy? Huge missed opportunity right there.

BS, because there was no Piper Hogan story, he almost never wrestled Hogan, because again, his terror at ever doing a job. So they never wrestled again in WWF singles matches. Piper was mark and a coward. Orndorff was the hotter property and went on to do jobs, and have the most lucrative house show program in WWF history with Hogan a couple of years late. Piper is a bullshit artist.

I get what Piper is saying, but eventually the payoff needs to happen with the face defeating the heel. It should have happened at the first Wrestlemania if Hogan and Piper had gone one on one. They could have also had Piper win the title for a few months and then Hogan win it back.
@NevrSilent
@NevrSilent 3 года назад
They got that final payoff at "The Wrestling Classic" PPV later that year (unfortunately, it didn't get the most massive buy rate, but PPV was still a complete experiment at that time--Wrestlemania wasn't even available as a PPV until over a month after the event!). Roddy had a good argument with "Don't you want some kind of a run made out of this?" New York didn't book "Back and forth" title changes very much. So the option they wound up with was "Hogan gets over, but it's never a truly, definitively clean win over Piper." So that's why it's basically a schmoz at the end of "War..." (plus now you can bring in Mr. T--for better or for worse). It's Orndorff who takes the fall at WMI (which, now you've got a side story feud between Orndorff and Piper). And they actually prove Piper is right by letting the feud have a bit of a house show run all that summer.
