Rowdy Roddy Piper discusses why his WCW return with Hulk Hogan began the end of the WCW. Full shoot ➤ TitleMatchNetwork.com
"Rowdy" Roddy Piper is one of the most legendary professional wrestlers of all time. Back in the 1990s, Piper shocked the wrestling world when he returned to World Championship Wrestling.
The series vs Hulk Hogan, his old nemesis in WWF, sparked a surge of interest in the WCW brand. Find out why issues that went "beyond backstage politics" ruined the angle and spelled the downfall of WCW.
What happened backstage with Kevin Nash in the dressing room? Who did Piper have heat with and why were there so many odd finishes during the Hogan feud?

RIP Hot Rod I was born in 1988 and as a 5th grader in 1996, I loved Hot Rod vs Hogan at Halloween Havoc. Upstairs in my room I had an old black and white antenna TV. For whatever reason, one of the last channels you could turn the knob too was a PPV channel that looked like a busted up VCR recording. It was like the surface of Jupiter. You could barely make out an arm here or a foot there, abd you couldnt get any sound. So there I was as a 8 year old upstairs watching a silent Halloween Havoc. Then I went to the magazine section at the Walmart a few days later and looked at the results in WCW magazine. Ahhhh the days of 56k modems and beepers. RIP hot rod

It sounds a bit like the old scrabled premium channels on cable. We used to sit up late and wait for the picture to clear up enough to see a boob on Cinemax. My VCR tuner would pick up weird things in the upper frequencies if I played with the fine tuning, I could occasionally pick up my neighbors cordless phone and what I can only assume now was possibly shortwave radio. PPV is a new one on me but I always had fun poking around on those high channel numbers in the mid to late eighties. Haven't thought about that in years.

Hogan did his WCW run good. He did the jobs he needed to do. BUT, the biggest stain on his WCW run will always be the Ultimate Warrior nonsense. That wasn't the reason for WCW beginning to fall. WCW fell, because of too many bloated guaranteed full-time contracts to wrestlers that were working part-time schedules. These bloated contracts not only made it impossible to make a profit, it prevented giving any normal contract and more publicity to up and comers.

I agree!! With Hogan having a No Lose clause, it really screwed everyone else. Then when they made Mr. Courtney Cox the World Champion, that was a big sign of failure. But bringing in all the ex-WWF guys in was the biggest misstep. WCW was killing WWF without all the ex-WWF guys. Bischoff didn't know how to use Bret correctly. People got sick of Goldberg's 2 moves (Spear/Jackhammer). Then they would start a story and then the story would just disappear.

This is a story of not knowing when to take a step back when your popularity dwindles. The NWO was a great faction and creation but it also included guys who came to work alot just to do spot interviews and then when the pay per view came they wanted to go over. Nash and Hall would say later that in a tag match with Piper and Flair, the latter went off script or something. WCW even brought in the Warrior for Main Event Matches with Hogan. Neither were ever great wrestlers in their younger days. The reputation preceded Piper, the Warrior, even Flair who had substantial history with Hogan so the build up was easy. Hall and Nash, while good performers, really had no history with these stars. Fans recognized though what a great wrestler Hall was but his best matches were with guys like Shawn Michaels. Michael's wasn't coming to WCW. Nash was decent but limited in that ring to a degree so in his later years the tags with Hall worked very well. Everything works to a point but knowing how to make the most of it and especially knowing when to move on is key. It is a business to make money period. The NWO grew, grew to a point the group put everyone over and went on until darn near everyone except for Flair and Arn Anderson had a run as a member. Every opponent in that match at Halloween Havoc when Hogan turned heel and that signaled the start of the NWO, everyone of those guys had a run as a member. Savage, Luger, even Sting. NWO Red, B&W, Wolfpack. It ran it's course. The Four Horseman proved you don't need a platoon of guys and an Announcer, Bischoff, to run a faction. I guess you adapt or die and that is what happened. Did the NWO ever really break up? Even Vince McMahon tried them in the WWE for a short period of time. I guess the WWE accepted the peaks and Valleys ultimately realizing that you develop and then push younger guys who are trying to make a name for themselves. WCW became spoiled by success to a point they could not transition to creativity in creating other talent. Goldberg was a nice idea, the streak he had, who though ended the streak? Hall and Nash with some dumb Taser gimmick. Not very creative and also was designed to get heat on guys that had already had it for so long. WCW even let Hall's demons, alcohol abuse, enter the show. Not good. A side of the business no one should be proud of. Greed and just ideas that ran their course and the inability to adapt plus they apparently just wasted so much money which was attributed to Greed and just being out of control. Guys wanting to just show up, run things, get paid huge amounts of money in the process, whether it was working or not, eventually didn't matter as long as certain guys were happy and running things. The stronger, more creative and innovative company, run by someone who knew what they were doing won out in the Monday Night wars eventually. The only thing McMahon did not have an opportunity to do with Hogan was to turn him heel after that long Hulkamania run he created in his company. He did it with Andre instead because that window was closing. That worked to the tune of 90 thousand fans at mania 3. Hogan would have eventually turned once that run dwindled. WWE created more stars to work with rather than a few factions. I could write about this for days.

I absolutely loved Piper but lots of people have said Nash slapped Piper around and also Hogan/Piper was at the end of 1996 when the whole N.W.O storyline was 6 months in so hadn’t even peaked (that would be Sting/Hogan at Starrcade in 1997) let alone the end of the angle and let alone the end of the company.
@ThorMaximus
@ThorMaximus 3 года назад
By spring of 97- WWF was better product. Ppl hadn’t changed over to watch yet, and when Shawn/Taker did Hell in a Cell-game was over. Austin was hottest thing in biz - DX got better than NWO. WCW was garbage going into Starcade and proof was what came out of that show. Piper was right.
@My19812011
@My19812011 3 года назад
@@ThorMaximus WWF definitely picked up by late 1996 and by mid 1997 was on fire all the way through to early 2001 but to say WCW was awful it wrong on every level, Starrcade in 1997 did the biggest buyrate in WCW history for a reason although post Starrcade is a different story as for me by mid 1998 they were going downhill rapidly. I’m sorry but Piper is giving a very biased opinion on it as he makes out everything post his main event run in WCW was awful and his feud with Hogan was the peak, it really wasn’t at all as WCW from late May in 1996 through to early/mid 1998 was must watch TV.

I always take these shoot interviews with a grain of salt, especially with wrestlers who worked during kayfabe. These guys worked people for a living. People get burned out of seeing the same thing over and over. They had something really great going and they ruined it, starting with Hogan having Sting's win at Starrcade 97 get tarnished. Heaven forbid you put over the guy who the crowd is loving. The nWo was an amazing faction whether they were winning or losing, but to see them do the same thing over and over and over... /golfclap You managed to make it stale.
