It's a GREAT album that grows on you. It doesn't just hit you right away with a bunch of singles, it's a well thought out concept album with a lot of soul. It took me about 3 or 4 good listens and now I LOVE "Broken Bones", "The Last Refugee", "Deja Vu" and I really like "The Most Beautiful Girl" and "Wait For Here". Most white supremacist despise this album because it bashes Donald Chump and of course people who are pro-israel despise Roger anyway lol

It doesn't sound good. It sounds over compressed as hell. The vocals have no dynamics. Go listen to the Final Cut and compare how the choruses on Final Cut will make you jump out of your seat. Here everything just sort of lies there. If you turn the record up loud enough to hear his words, everything else makes you want to turn it down. Nigel tried to mix in a volume knob, when we all turn it up to our preferred volume anyway. Mix it so we want to turn it up! Nigel does this with Radiohead too. Everything is too compressed because he wants his album to sound 'loud.' Rubbish.

Really fine analyse. And there is another thing you didn't mentioned. In the context of the Pink Floyd albums, the war with Gilmour etc.., this album really gives the feeling that Roger Waters has finally the final word : This album really moves, and to me, it says : ok, finally, he is the master. This album is like his last tour de force (and bras d'honneur / finger) to those who laughed at him. And more important, it's an album made by someone who wants to deliver something meaningful before he dies. All is in the title; Finally, this album is the definitive final cut of the Pink Floyd's albums. And now , try to listen to the last album by Gilmour, and you will know what i mean : Waters delivered a moving, emotional, intensive, dark, deep, meaningful album, helped with an intelligent raw and limited vintage production (thanks Nigel !)

I am a huge Floyd fan and also enjoy most of all their solo stuff. It is clear that Roger Waters gave Pink Floyd their edge, but the sound was mostly Gilmour and Wright creating these layered soundscapes. Waters albums have been criticized for not sounding "Floyd" enough, so the call backs to some "Floyd" sounds were welcomed for me. Gilmour did the same thing on Division Bell, but to a greater extent. On the first listen I liked 3 or 4 of the songs immediately and then after about ten listens I liked the whole album end to end. I have few complaints, it felt short, the electric guitar was sparse as were the solos, and he didn't use some songs he had basically completed that he has done live over the years. Songs like "Each Small Candle," "To Kill the Child," "Crystal Clear Brooks," and "Flickering Flame," all which are great songs that with some reworking would have fit on this album just fine. Some spots of the album I wish the lyrics were a bit stronger and others I wished the music was a bit stronger. I am still listening to it because thematically and emotionally this albums is dense and requires many listens to really absorb the lyrics and understand their meaning. If you are a classic rock fan this is a solid 8 out 10.

When you think of what Roger has done in his 50 year career, it's really hard to get excited about this album. Roger was very lucky to be part of Pink Floyd. Since he left Pink Floyd, none of his solo albums come close to the glory days of Pink Floyd. I'd say the same thing about David Gilmour's solo efforts. I'd rather listen to Piper, Meddle, Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall for the millionth time before listening to any of Roger and David's solo albums. The chemistry and resulting great music were there when Syd, David, Nick, Rick, and Roger composed and performed together. Ask yourself this question: would any of David and Roger's solo work have gone anywhere if they did not have the enormous success of their collaboration in Pink Floyd before their solo efforts came out? I seriously doubt it. I wish Roger and David would get over their differences and focus on a Pink Floyd reunion tour with the surviving band members. That's what the fans like me really and truly want, not the half baked, flavorless solo albums these guys continue to put out.
@audiophileman7047
@audiophileman7047 7 лет назад
@Cofee: They have? Then when are they going to do a reunion tour, not just a show or two? I've seen recent interviews with both Roger and David and it doesn't sound like it's over. They're not at each other's throats like back in the '80's, but there is a thin peace between them.

I fuckin adore this album. I finally got to have a Waters record come out in my life time that actually pertains to stuff which is relevant to me, which is just awesome. This had an awesome soundscape too, mainly because of that lack of a prominent guitar, which he uses like an orchestral instrument, and some really cool harmonies and well written string parts. My personal favourite was probably picture that, or maybe broken bones. I personally put it at like an 8 goin on 9. Great video as ever.

There's nothing more heart breaking than playing your favorite album on audio tape and having your player eat it. And yes that includes TDK. Wow, this comment section is horrible. This was a pleasant surprise of an album. Main complaint is that it felt sort of repetitive instrumentally... But it feels refreshing to hear an album with something critical to say about our moment, featuring some of Waters' most blunt lyrics. If FJM's Pure Comedy criticized our moment through postmodern sarcasm, ITTLWRW skips past the winking and nudging, and no one's laughing.

i'm seeing roger live in 2 months, and am gearing up by watching lots of waters/floyd content as well as videos of shows being posted as the tour makes its way across america.he's doing songs from "amused to death" and "is this the life we really want" which i can't wait to see live. i know this video is 5 years old,but if you haven't listened to the album in a while you should revisit it. as with most of his work,roger is ahead of the times. "is this the life we really want" applies to us even more today than when it was released. in the new show he adds a verse to "the bravery of being out of range" that talks about it being 30 years later and little has changed. if anything things have gotten worse.

Absoulotly love this album. I don't mind it sounds familiar that's exactly what i wanted from him. Just wish there was a bit more electric guitar in Picture this instead of organ sound on chorus. But hey Waters is still a genius and always will be

Will you please review Elder's new album "Reflections Of A Floating World"? Elder is most famous for creating a new frontier in stoner rock/metal with the progressive elements in 2015's "Lore", and the new album uses basically the same formula, but it cuts out a lot of the aimless filler which made up the middle part of "Lore". It's a great album, and, in my opinion, worth a listen.

The final cut was just a album that was songs that weren't good enough to make the wall album, so Roger waters pretty much released it as a solo album with the PINK FLOYD name on it. Roger waters was the only member that called that a Pink Floyd album, PINK FLOYD never went cumput, they would go on to have 2 successful album's without waters, let's not forget that the last album, endless river would become the most preordered album in Amazon history.

You do realize only 3 songs on the finale cut were supposed to be on the wall, right? The rest is original.

I like it more than I expected I would. I still think Amused To Death is better despite a few weaker songs at the end, but I like the pace and intimacy of ITTL. I'm with you on the rating.

well ALRIGHTY then! i guess i have to buy/listen to this as i am a lover of ATD which i bought from Ying Tan's interim project-Pacific Vinyl. i had heard there would only be about 2000 LP pressings and in those days of the dreaded COMPACT DISC (i never got rid of my vinyl and took my time to buy a good sounding cdp). i will admit to you that i haven't always warmed up to your reviewing style, or at least most of the music reviewed, you knocked this one OUT OF THE PARK. i will get back to you after i have heard the music. ...hifitommy

If you want to listen to Amused to Death, then listen to the 2015 mix for sure. And in reference to this album, Bird in a Gale is probably one of my favourites on this record, behind Deja Vu and Picture That.

Although I'm really enjoying Is the the Life.... and think its a pretty good album (Anthony's 'Strong 7' is actually right on the money!) I can't help but think (musically, not lyrically, of course) we're listening to a 'work in progress' of a Floyd album circa '77 to say '82 and that all the drums, percussion, keys, bass, strings, acoustic guitar, tiny bit of electric guitar and Rog's vocals are already completed. All that needs to be done is add Gilmour's and poss Wright's vocal tracks.... and of course Dave's soaring trademark guitar and.... Tadaaa!.... a Pink Floyd album!!! It's the absence of hardly any electric guitar on this album that really hits home (subtle hint from Roger to David? Who knows!) when listening to it. Lyrically though Roger is bang up to date and, although well into his 70's, he's not an happy bunny at the state of the world! Not one little bit!

For lovers of Animals era Floyd this is a real gift. So what if they say deja vu about it sounding like Floyd that's not a bad thing. Few songwriters can harness this level of serene and testosterone at the same time. People that only listened to DSOTM won't ever get into Waters solo stuff cause they are stuck in the mainstream consensus reality. Waters writes songs for outside-the-box free-thinkers.

I say this time and time again. Waters always has it down lyrically but he could never nail the musical part of his songs since his Pink Floyd days, hell even the Final Cut had it musically at times because of Gilmour. But this is to no surprise as he has always been a wonderful and powerful lyricist.

I agree with what melon says, I like that Roger's albums are outspoken, political and he keeps true to his heart. This album in particular to me is the best of his solo work. I just can't seem to enjoy any of his solo work.
