This video is a short tutorial on the Roland Boutique TB-03 Bass Line Synthesizer.
0:17 Step Rec Mode
1:25 Original 303 Rec Mode
2:46 Connecting CV/GATE
The Roland Boutique TB-03 is a direct descendant of the famous TB-303 Bass Line Synth. The layout and controls are unchanged, so it works just like the original. It sounds like it too, thanks to Roland’s advanced ACB technology that recreates the hypnotic liquid grooves of the magic silver box.
But the new TB-03 goes even further, with several enhancements not found on the original model. The four-digit LED display makes programming easier and more accurate, while overdrive and delay effects let you unleash a twisted, tribal wall of sound to send the crowd into a frenzy.
Back in the studio, the TB-03 can send control information via MIDI or its USB port, the latter of which also functions as a audio interface.

Are the basslines mono or stereo? Is it possible to use them to make psytrance songs without any problems?

I bought one, it sounds great! But this unit needs a "live recording mode" in the worst way. Allowing you to play in and record a pattern via a midi keyboard. I tried it. It recorded all of my notes, but simply stuck them in consecutive sequence steps with no regard for timing. And you can't add slides to any "played in" notes either. So that must be a bug.

Why not just make it analog? I don't get it. So close, yet so far away. I remember talking to you guys in 97, and was told "Roland is a move forward company, we would never release the 303 or 909 again." Well, here we are. :) I'm not complaining, don't get me wrong... I am glad you finally came around. So the question is, if you are going to do it.. why not go all the way and make the piece again? Every other synth company has re-leased their analog "hey-day" pieces, why not do the same. As I have always said.. if you make a perfect piece of art everyone wants to have (such as the 303, 909, 808, 606, Jupiter, Juno etc).. why not just make them again? Just my two cent, signed... a fan who has worked with you guys in the past. ;)

Original components that were put inside the 303 when new simply aren't made anymore (a certain type of transistor I believe), that's why. Plus, making it digital saves a tonne of cash. If this was analogue it'd cost a few hundred more. Besides, who cares if its analogue or not? It sounds like a 303. Two genuine 303s don't even sound the same when put next to each other, and once you shove compression, reverb, distortion and other effects that always get thrown on a 303, you'll not notice the subtle differences at all.

I would easily pay twice the price for one of these if it was analog.

Sorry for off topic question: I just acquired a Roland A-01K, which seems to be on sale everywhere. Is it end of life already? Oh and also, if you could please forward that, it is certainly a bug that the power goes off after pulling the USB connection, although batteries are inside!?!?!? Sometimes the USB is just needed for computer or iOS MIDI stuff, and could be pulled off during a performance. THe unit should stay siwtched on and do it's thing when batteries are inside. I do not understand.

Just got one today and completely love the sound of it. Would be good if you had more tutorials that were slower but have found another from someone that commented on one of these videos anyway. Mainly though for the end of this one : wow. That sound at the end when it was connected to the other synth. Amazing.

I seem to have a problem on my TB-03; whenever I program the step pitches into different octaves, they don't play the correct octave when the pattern is played back. They are entered correctly in Original Mode, but they don't sound like they were entered.
@rolandglobal
@rolandglobal 7 лет назад
When entering notes in either Step Rec or Original Mode, the TRANSPOSE Up and Down buttons control the octave range of the notes. Please experiment with these buttons to test your pitch issue. If this doesn't assist, please update firmware and reset.
@elsongs
@elsongs 7 лет назад
Yes, I have done that, and updated the firmware from 1.03 to 1.04 and reset the unit. I still have problems with octaves playing differently than programmed, and when I enter rest notes in Time Mode, sometimes 16-step patterns play back as 8-step patterns.

Please contact your local Roland support and they can help you through each step of the process.

Can you delete a step/note in Step Recording Mode? Say you've programmed all 16 notes. Listen back and decide you don't want step/note 8 and 10. Can you remove them like on the TB-3?
@rolandglobal
@rolandglobal 7 лет назад
Hi Chris, on the TB-3 you "clear" the note, on the TB-03 you add a rest. This can be done in Pattern Write, with the Time Mode buttons. Please refer to the manual for the process. www.roland.com/global/products/tb-03/support/
@mkyboy
@mkyboy 7 лет назад
Sure. So you can't in Step Mode then. You have to switch to Original Mode/Time Mode. Got it.

It just doesn't sound like an tb-303. Stop recreating old analog gear to digital new ones. You just can't do it right. Invest your R&D money to make something new or just make an analog tb-303mkII with extras.. Damn
@zambination11
@zambination11 7 лет назад
For an amateur bedroom music studio implementation its awesome, i couldn't agree more. But its NOT a tb-303 recreation and they shouldn't market it as one. Its a digital machine with a very good sounding digital synthesis definitely not a "Boutique". In its price though, there are more capable digital bass machines out there with plenty of extras and unique characteristics.

It's you who expects a $300 piece of gear to sound exactly like a forty year old 2-3K piece of analog gear

Hello, it's me and I was wondering if after all these years you'd like to meet. Its $450 for this crap and for the original TB303 was $395 when first came up in 1982
@crateinvaderz
@crateinvaderz 7 лет назад
actually it's 349 and back in '82 that was a lot more than 350.. but you obviously already made up your mind
@zambination11
@zambination11 7 лет назад
U.S average annual salary in '82 ≈ $14000. Now in E.U the average is €18000. Plus taxes and inflation we have to pay more pro rata. Maybe it was but Wiki captures $395.
