Man, a 101 & an Eventide (or two) really has always been all one needs.

Yeah - I think RU-vid favors those who are selling something and talking a lot, that’s my understanding. If you’re quietly doing your own thing, the algorithm doesn’t like you. It’s ok, I don’t think I’d want to be a peddler. The 101 is such a great synth, I’ve loved it ever since hearing Squarepusher use one. Sooo good.

Thanks! I love the Eventide. It sounds just like the space pedal (which I use for playing live in my studio).

@@MIDERA Isn't the space pedal great?! I love mine! I got a SH-5 and I was wondering if a 101 is different in a way that would warrant another purchase. The Space one convinced me and got a H3000 (D/SX). Can't wait until the studio is done and fire it up.

Might be my favorite electronic music track I've ever heard to be honest... Just love that. And to this day, have no idea how he sequenced it (like, how he generated the pattern if it was just accidental or intentional), because I can't generate that sequence without listening to it in extremely slow motion and seeing others make it. Brilliant track. Thanks :)

I'm going to have to dig into this more - as that interests me. I'm also considering the SH-1oh1 mod... I'm just not sure whether to mod it further. There's a mod on it to send LFO into audio rates, but it seems sort of useless. So already my unit is not in unadulterated condition - any thoughts on modding vintage gear? Thanks for the message! @@MIDERA The Tubbutec upgrades are great. I've got it on my TR-77 and got another to fit into my TR-606. I also modded my TB-303 with another kit. I might do the SH-101, although mine is absolutely mint condition and so I've wondered about keeping it stock.

Yeah, I agree - after hearing how the MS-1 does NOT have the filter resonance hit during inharmonic tones, it misses some of the character. The SH-101 manages to have this sound, like you say, breaking up or “sizzling” as I’d call it... it sounds really good.

@@MIDERA Same as the Juno 60- that and the poppy envelopes are what set them apart. The MS1 glide is missing both of those things and the portamento is god awful slow. I was surprised by how bad it was. It's a fine generic monosynth, but it's not an SH101 replacement.

That’s a shame - I’m a little surprised since Behringer could basically handle the components, but clearly that’s not enough.

I’ve thought about the midi mod too... but I sequence it with either the Squid or Analog Keys using CV.... it works. Although mine already has an LFO mod on it and signatures as well (including Herbie Hancock). So mine isn’t exactly clean. I got mine for $600 USD, it was quite a steal.

Hey thanks :) I'm sequencing it using the SH-101, nothing else. It has its own pretty awful sequencer in there. I don't like it, but I'll probably do the tubbutec upgrade that allows for going back and deleting within the sequence as I'm making it. From one perspective, the SH-101 is WAY better because it is so simple - it's all WYSIWYG, but at the other end you can't save sequences and it doesn't offer the 4 voice mode. But honestly, the size difference, the history... I would rather have the SH-101. Also, I heard some bad aliasing in the upper registers with the SH-01a that, well... wouldn't be there in the original being analog. Whether that matters? I don't know.

@@MIDERA Nice! I didn't realize the original had a sequencer. What you were doing sounded complicated enough to get somewhere with. My rule is, if I notice it, it matters. Like the Rev 2 filter bleed. If I had a synth I could hear doing that during use it would drive me up the wall.

@@pointsurrender Yeah, I think I sent you the rev 2 filter bleed... and I realized it wasn't so bad. But - I haven't really been pursuing it any more. I have too much gear. That's VERY evident to me. But thankfully everything I have in my studio is loved. I just need a good way to store things I'm not using. The SH-101 sequencer is just no fun for me, right now, fyi - way too hard to navigate (if you mess up, I don't think you can back up, you just have to start over!).

I can't imagine that's what Squarepusher did - I literally have no idea how he did those drums :/ But really, this is the only thing worth sequencing on the SH-101.

@@MIDERA Squarepusher's drums are probably sampled, given that they're break beat. Even if they're now, you can probably sync from a click track from a drum machine that also plays the drums. Just use separate outputs.

@@bastiaanw3519 My last attempt at this track using drum samples (individual, not entire beats) was a failure.

MIDERA I totally suck at drums and rhythms to begin with, so I'm afraid our journey ends here, then 😅😬

I'm pretty sure on that album Jenkinson was using a mix of DR-660 direct and his S950. If I had to guess he was clocking the 101 with a 707's rim trig so that 660 can still be the master clock.
