This video is a run through of the Roland VS 880 vocal effects I'll be using through the Aeros loop studio. Probably not very exciting for most people, but a little dingle berry tickling for those interested in the technical/creative side, considering I don't always use effects for their intentions.
Welcome to the Guitar Fool channel!
The only goal here is to have fun with live music and sounds, no limits or expectations.
This is basically my writing zone, where the ideas percolate before moving on to a finished eternal recording.
All music conceived and played here will primarily be with my Aeros Loop Studio, Beat Buddy drum machine, Roland VS 880 Xpanded for mixing into the looper and vocal effects and Alesis SR 16 drum machine and a bucket load of guitar pedals.
A true mix of old and new technology, or what the kids would call retro.
If you like to hear music with a twist of something to it, and just all round silliness, hit the subscribe button for my weekly uploads.

USe to have this piece of kit. I used it to record various other piece of samplers and synths I had at the time. It's fun seeing it used in a completely different way than I utilized it. Cheers. :)

Thanks for the comment Jeremy. It's still a fun unit to use for sure. Stay tuned for some more VS FX vids 🍻

Really great . . thanks. It nice to see a fun but very informative review of the effects. I imagine there is no way to "show" the vocal effects effectively, without a bit of "space gas" creeping in!! You've got talent man . . and guts . . go for it. Ive got an old VSR 880 and was wondering about whether to invest in getting a VS8f-2 effects card. So even though I hate to ruin a brilliant demo with a sensible question . . . but . . . do you know if the effecfts you've "demonstrated" are the vocal effects on the VS8f-2 card. Sorry if I've missed something but I think you stated at the start that your machine was the VSR 880EX version. Is that just an VSR880 with the board added . . or does the EX version have another way (eprom maybe) of getting the on-board effects. Many thanks. Brilliant . . just brilliant!!!

Thanks Neil for the mighty kind words, super appreciated! I'm in the process of making music videos for all of the songs that I recorded on the VS 880, so make sure to check back, or subscribe, so you can hear how I used them in a creative way. I'll also be filming one or two more vids regarding the VS 880. I believe the EX version was an extra effects board, possibly with more user save settings too. I do remember the VS8f-2 being referenced so I'm pretty sure you're correct about that. Thanks again for the comment, it's a bit hard to tell if it's worth the time with RU-vid a lot of the time, but you just revved me up for a couple of more months at least!

This is awesome, I just dug up my old vs880 remembering it had some great effects, even subtle reverbs etc... I’m working on new music & just thought it would be cool to revisit... What is ur mic setup? Is it going directly into the vs880? Or is it going to an interface? I was just now looking for an XLR input & didn’t see it... I literally completely forgot how to use this thing, but it’s been 15 yrs 😅... Any insight would be appreciated, love the video!

Thanks Indighost for watching and commenting. I'm stoked you found the video useful, and hopefully motivating to use the VS again! The effects in the VS still sound great to me, and you can buy them for 200 bucks! I'll probably end up getting another one as a spare, just in case. The way I use the microphone in these videos is the AKG directly into the VS with 1/4" then RCA cable out of VS to looper, finally into Roland Octacapture. That way I can effect and loop my voice. The way I do it when I record a song properly is with my Rhode NT2 XLR lead into a 48 volt phantom power preamp and out to the VS. Or I just use the AKG straight in and straight out. I hope that clarifies and helps. I should have a video up in the next day showing my new studio and setup, so lots of new vids to come! Cheers again mate.

I believe that the same FX must be incorporated into the VS 2480 CD as well, or? Nice video, thanks a lot.
@mindtorquemusic
@mindtorquemusic 2 года назад
Thanks Alfredo! Yes the same FX are incorporated into the 2480. A mate had one of those, they literally came out about 6-12 months after I'd bought the 8 track! Would've loved one of those. Thanks for stopping by 🍻

It's a great video, very creative and inspiring thank you very much I have a slightly weird question: in the video, do you turn on the effects and speak into the microphone without anything recorded? If I want to record a humorous tape, can I plug the Roland vss into a cassette recorder and use the Roland vss as a simple voice effect pedal? Sorry if my English is not very clear, I am French
@mindtorquemusic
@mindtorquemusic 2 года назад
Hi Louis thanks for the comment and subscribing! It makes me happy when I can inspire others to be creative. You are correct, you don't have to be recording. Just plug the mic into the VS, set the fx to insert and record onto your tape deck. Hours of fun for the easily amused like ourselves. Your English is excellent, my French would be nowhere as good! Cheers from Tropical Oz!

@@mindtorquemusic That's great ! I want to buy a Roland VS and your video made me want to make a cassette in tribute to frank sidebottom! In your video you are using the "Roland vs 880 v-xpanded" but do you think they are exactly the same effects in the "Roland VS 880EX "? Because it is more easily found on second-hand Greetings from the North of France!
@mindtorquemusic

@@abortiv-discs I think there might be a few extra FX in the expanded plus the second FX section. I'll try to find my manual to see the difference.

nice fx - how many fx can you run on each channel simultaniously? Im thinking to get one to use as a live submixer to mix/add fx to my synths. What ya say?
@mindtorquemusic
@mindtorquemusic Год назад
If you run them as pre/ post fade you can use them across all channels at the same time. If you insert them you can only use on one channel. Also, certain types can only be used one at a time. I think the bigger versions have more fx to spread out amongst the tracks though.

Hi, Thanks for the entertaining demo. If you see this. I's love to know what that last effect(s) is. Many thanks, Wm

Hey Bill, the last effect is called Shimmer UD. It's basically shimmer delay with pitch shift. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment! Much appreciated 🍻

Thanks! It reminds me of the Earthquacker Rainbow effect. I heard sort of a soul jazz cut on the radio with it and been interested but know it would only get used rarely...You just saved me some money! The VS is incredible.@@mindtorquemusic

@@BopKitBill Glad I could help. I actually forgot about that effect, that's why I made the video, so I could go through and have an example of effects I'd forgotten about. The VS is still great, even if it's just for the brilliant FX.

I have a question I was hoping you could help me with I have the Roland vs 880 and I'm using my son's keyboard to try to make a beat so I can add guitar later but I can't figure out how to make a beat and then loop it, I was wondering if you could help me with that and also if you had the camera pointed at the Roland it would help out a lot so I could see which buttons you're pressing. Thank you
@mindtorquemusic
@mindtorquemusic 3 года назад
Hi Matt, I haven't built loops in the VS before, I use an Aeros loop studio and beat buddy for any looping I do. From memory I think there is a way to do that though. I'll sniff around and see if I can work it out🎸

@mindtorquemusic 3 года назад
@@mattdrennon374 no worries mate. I know they have a loop function in the VS but can't remember if it can be used for creating beats. The drum machine on my little Yamaha keyboard also has cool beats, I'll do a vid with that this week.

Both. I have a nice Rhode nt2 48 volt powered, but mainly that gets used when I record with Cakewalk. For the VS at the moment I use an AKG D 770 straight in. But in the past I have used the Rhode into a pre amp and out to the VS.
