I was at a family wedding recently & noticed one of my cousins wearing an Explorer. He received it as a 25th birthday gift. He's now 70. Yup, a 1975 Explorer, worn daily. He even purchased a new, replacement bracelet when he received the watch, just in case :) He still has the box, papers, & new bracelet unused. When you own 1 watch like that, you only need 1 watch. IMHO
I always admired the Explorer from afar and then I saw one on the guy at the next table to me at a restaurant at Heathrow T5 about 4 years ago. He was wearing a very smart suit and I saw the watch and it just oozed understated class. It looked superb, but anyone who didn’t know watches probably thought it was a Seiko. It was then I knew I had to get one. Fast forward to last month when I picked a new one up from a local AD for my birthday, which is in 2 days time. I’ve been torturing myself by having it in the house but not allowed to wear it. Only 2 more days to go till I can wear it.
I just got this watch as my first good watch ever from my father as a graduation present. After your review I’m completely in love with it, thank you for making my experience even better! Greetings from Brazil.
Bought this same watch Explorer 214270 4 days ago in Singapore, I am so pleased with my purchase and enjoying your review. True gentleman watch, underrated and timeless, definitely a keeper. Less is More!
Just came across your channel last week.....great content! Beautiful watch. I wear my 214270 all the time and not babied. Worn daily in the sea , shower, long walks, up mountains . I love my scratched up explorer - every scratch and mark is a testament to adventure.....Keep exploring.
Beautiful review of an icon and thoroughly enjoyed you guiding us through. Amazing work on the footage, and particularly loved the macros and the ending ! Keep it up !
Ian Fleming wore a Rolex Explorer. He most likely wore it while writing his Bond novels and imagined his hero to be wearing the exact same watch. So there you have it. The Rolex Explorer is the original Bond watch. Forget the Sub. Forget Omega. It’s the Explorer that’s under Bond’s Tux and wetsuit.
Excellent. My favorite Rolex. Original James Bond. Everest. Mad Men. Perfect every day crossover. New lume. Sports hands. Excellent readability. Under the radar. Love!
Hi. First time I’ve come across your channel and just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this discussion about the explorer. You seem like a really straight chap and sick of young guys talking shite about all the possessions they have and actually not really discussing and admiring things for what they are. I look forward to looking at your other videos and hearing your opinions on stuff and life 😊 good work my friend 👍🏼
Nice job on this review! I too have that same model and I absolutely LOVE it. It grows on me the more I wear it...Also love the GMT you're wearing too!
Finally finished watching this video. Only I think 3 months later. Well worth the wait. Your videos and reviews are quality. It's a stunningly elegant watch!
Would love to add the Explorer to my watch collection but also enjoy the Polar Explorer II. Classic Rolex. You can't go wrong. By the way, I love Italy.
Oisin you have sold me on this model - had no interest at all before I had seen your unboxing and review. Now I am on a list at 2 AD's for it (as an everyday watch), to add to my growing collection that includes 3 x Rolex, a JLC Reverso Duoface and a vintage Omega . I also share your love for two-tone watches (I have the same Daytona and a black dial Datejust 41), even though some "purists" totally write them off. Love your channel and really appreciate the high production values. Keep up the great work!
I've got the GMT Master II and just bought a 2018 Explorer. Absolutely love both of them and picked them up cheap. The market is going to hell currently.
Such a classic great all around watch, it works for just about any occasion, love the aesthetics and agree that this is the model to get, those lumed numerals alone make such a difference and just look so much nicer, no comparison to the previous model in my opinion, congratulations on your new Explorer.
A really stylish and underrated watch.Beautiful in it's simplicity.Love the video, another well crafted gem.Informative and laid back commentary and,as usual,in a stunning location.Keep them coming, enjoy yourself and stay safe.
Great watch! I got myself the same last saturday at my AD in zurich. Here you get champagne 🥂 but also if you don’t buy a watch. If you buy one they give you a bottle of champagne to take home 😉 and the security guy is not visibly armed 😅 Enjoy the watch I certainly will enjoy mine 👍💪
Beautiful watch indeed, I love the metal wrap around the markers and the blue lumen is fabulous! A great time to show off your watch when you're dining at a low lit restaurant. You are building quite an impressive collection there my friend. Just curious do you have a car collection? Please tell me you at least have a Ferrari 🙂
Ok, so the Intro music, followed by 'the moment you come back from your AD with a brand new Rolex, first you have to have a drink' earned my Sub. Exactly what i did in July for my Birthday ;) Cheers Sir.......
It's precisely one year since I bought my 214270. I wanted a simple, smart but slightly sporty, watch but with no date because I knew I wouldn't be wearing it every day and I didn't want the faff of changing it a couple of times a week. A new one took some finding and I had to travel to the dealer in Malmo to pick it up. I have never been a "possessions person", but this is something really special. When I first got it, I was pleased with it but this watch really grows on you the more you wear it. Now I really love it and I enjoy wearing it. If you are thinking of buying a Rolex, then you really can't go wrong with this.
@@shaneh2289 I tried several Rolex dealers across the north of England, as well as some in Sweden, including Stockholm and Gothenburg. No luck until by chance I called the dealer in Malmo where they had only recently setup. They said they had an Explorer and the next day I went to buy it. Are you wanting to buy one? If so, oddly a brand new one will probably work out slightly cheaper than a second hand one.
Doggle Bird yes I am trying to find one! I’m heading to Stockholm this weekend actually. So thanks for the reply, trying to get a little info before I head into town
@@shaneh2289 Phone up first, Shane, as you'll be fortunate if you find that they actually stock them. Good luck and I hope you enjoy your Explorer as much as I enjoy mine.
This is the video that finally made me pull the trigger on the explorer 1. It's been a whole year since I bought mine from the AD and I must say, you do a great job of capturing the details of these watches. Most sites and channels have such poor lighting, they really do not do the watch justice, and this is one gorgeous timepiece!
I used to own the 114270 36m from 2002 and I sold to a dealer earlier this year since then I have missed it terribly. However next week I will be picking up the latest version the 214270 identical to yours from my local AD. I am very excited about getting it. Great video!
Just to follow up. I picked my Rolex Explorer the 214270 from my AD yesterday and I have to say if there was ever a watch that is near perfect with a great history this is it. I love this timepiece, it's discrete with supreme quality all rolled into one. Keep the videos coming, very informative and full of practical advice. Thanks!
The List price is £5k in the UK picked mine up last week..The Lume is probably the best I have ever seen..For me its the best Rolex money can buy if you are lucky enough to get one...
I own the same model and love it! Feels like finally the 369 are awaken after they were put to sleep at night for decades since they were replaced with white gold.
Wow, I really enjoyed the photos of the Explorer outside and especially of it sitting in the tea saucer. It just looks so naturally fitting to the cup and saucer in a blue sky background. :-) Thank you for the review. I too just picked up a new Explorer and it's a sweet watch that is classic.
I have been a luxury mechanical watch collector for 25 years. I my Rolex collection, I have subs to daytonas. I have always overlooked the explorer. Just purchased one a few days ago at my local AD. I just wanted to say that I have not purchased a watch and been that infatuated with it. Although it is my cheapest Rolex it the one I like the most. So under the radar and versatile. Can wear with suit or casual. It's the simplicity and very classic and stylish. Definitely a keeper. Just wished I purchased it earlier, it would have saved me money as it would have stopped me purchasing some other sport models and more money saved for higher horology pieces.
Yup; looks perfect on your wrist - which is considerably bigger than mine. So I guess that if I’d go for a 36mm model, the scale would be similar. It’s the perfect fit; no overhang but still doesn’t look too small on the arm. The shape of things to come I think - now that we’re finally moving towards the more understated elegant look. In that respect the Explorer is the perfect everyday watch...but still more than fitting for formal occasions... I’m not blindly shaming bigger watches here. A diver watch is kind of o.k. being bigger, same with a pilot watch...because it fits the purpose. But a watch for every day wear - not much are more fitting than an Explorer. Understated style is what it is!
Amazing review just discovered your channel and instantly subscribed, currently on the waiting list for one but have no idea how long I’m going to have to wait

Here’s to all the Irish Rolex owners out there!! Btw, how are the prices there? I was back over at the Krimbo to see me ma and saw some outrageous tags on stuff in the windows.
The Timeless Watch Channel expensive. Weirs have nutin but date justs. I got mine in Galway. I am considering a Tudor GMT at the minute. 3700 if you can find one here from an AD. On the current exchange rate can get one brand new in the uk for 3000. 700 saving on that level of watch so you can imagine the potential on the higher ticket items. I doubt I’ll be buying many more watches in Ireland if I’m honest. You based in Italy did I hear you say? What made you move over there? 👩🏼 🤔

OneInchPunch I’m based in New York but I’ve been in Italy the past few months (have a place here too) but I’m heading back soon so the newer vids are gonna have Manhattan background instead of lovely old Italian architecture. The Tudor sounds great. I don’t own one yet but I’ve been tempted lately. Maybe one of the eta ones cos they’re a little slimmer and have that cool smile on the dial.
You’ve given a lot of love to the explorer range! I’m starting to think that you like them more than I do...but That’s not possible. It was my first Rolex (39mm)...And I no longer have my submariner so it’s my only Rolex. If there was a fire and I had time to grab just one watch, I probably wouldn’t Grab my explorer. I wouldn’t need to because it would most likely already be on my wrist! Thanks for yet another great review!
Beautiful watch and great model. I have to be biased as I have the MK1. I never found use for lume on any of my watches. I love how the light catches the full white gold 3,6 & 9 on the MK1. I don’t even notice the short hands. I hear a lot of people saying 36mm is better but I think the 39mm is bang on. Cheers and enjoy your new purchase *Ian from Dublin*🤓👍🏻
I’m an Omega guy and have never been interested in Rolex. But must admit, the one Rolex Steel Sport that I admire is the Explorer. I buy quality watches to wear and enjoy. My Omegas go back to late 90’s and early 2000’s with Original Planet Ocean my last purchase in 2008. I almost pulled the trigger on an Explorer but instead purchased a Tudor Heritage Ranger on secondary market for less than 1/3 of the price of an Explorer. I’m enjoying it very much. In house movement not worth $4,000+ to me. Ranger is my retirement “beater”. All the Omegas were recently serviced at Swatch in SoCal. They spend most of their days in the safe, waiting to be passed on to the next generation 😁
Great video and you nailed it on the size. Fits perfectly on your wrist although if you physically measure it it's closer to 40mm. Size and weight suits a larger wrist. If your under 7" then the 36mm is a better choice. Look for a late 08 114270 with rehault for the closest match. I've owned both and with a 6.5" wrist l really wanted to love the latest model, l even pur it on a rubber strap. In the end l kept the older version and happier that l did. L wear it daily and in fact surprisingly lve come to appreciate the folding clasp and hollow center links
What a shame, a lot of us have missed the boat, in being able to afford this once forgotten Rolex. Four years ago, when the Explorer was a readily available model, few of us gave it a second thought, it was Submariner or Daytona, commanding huge interest. In the last year, due to covid, and the unavailability of any Rolex model, the price of the Explorer has skyrocketed, almost double list price. A once affordable grey market watch, has become out of reach for most of us, and i can see its popularity increase in the future
This watch is what got me into watches. I like that clean look. Beautiful design. I had to get in the grey market since I don’t have any kind of relationship with my AD. Been on a list for 2 years for a sub.
Gotta be honest, I really love that on your wrist, and have decided I want one. Was thinking about the iconic submariner, but think this has more class, without trying to hard.
I have just got my sub after moaning like crazy I couldn’t get one ,, it pays to wait for that perfect deal to arrive.... re your explorer 1 , I bought my father the mk 2 version,, absolutely stunning, simplicity at its best and just so works.... congrats on all your purchases!
Just got my 36mm Datejust back from being serviced today. The last time I had it done was in 1990 or so. And for $525 from my local jeweler, I'd say that's a fair price. If you look on Jomashop or other sites, they list the 36mm as a ladies watch. Ha!
Got one today! I LOVE it! Goes nicely in the collection alongside the speedmaster moon watch, seamaster 300 ceramic, submariner, datejust 2 tone and Cartier roadster. Great review!
