Ok. This is something that has been living rent free in my head for the past couple of weeks… why is the Rolex Daytona 38mm but we all say it is 40???? And my OP34… WHY IS IT MEASURING AS 32mm?!
I know, I know, who loses their mind over a couple of mm’s….? MEEEE. THATS WHO!!!! Hahaha!
And you know! I’m not an evil villain! I can cope with .5mm off, there or there abouts. But 2mm in wrist watch land is massive!!!! This is a world where tiny things make a giant difference.
But then I thought, ok. Maybe I am measuring it wrong. And I am still open to that! But from every resource I see on how to properly measure a wrist watch, I am measuring the Daytona properly, but the largest number I’ve ever gotten was 39.2mm! (Much closer to 40mm; but still… rather more like 39mm 😂😂) but I most regularly get sometjing nearer the 38mm ball park.
GAH! WHY IS THIS BOTHERING ME SOOOO MUCH?!
Time to break out the callipers & let me know your findings on Rolex sizes!

Ok! I can’t reply to another person saying the size includes crown guards. 😂🙈 it does not. With crown guards it measures 42mm and then we are still 2mm out! And if that is the case, then it is the only Rolex that measures with crown guards included. 😂 then the GMT Master 2 is measuring at 44mm. I know you are trying to help, but…. Crown guards are NOT included in Rolex sizing 😂 (per their own size guideline as show at 3:33 .

At first i thought that your calipers were broken... But yeah the watch IS 2mm short. Soo technically any precious metal daytona has a bit less of that metal compared to like a sub. Or maybe it evens out because of the pushers?

Hello Britt, I am a mechanical engineer and think your vernier caliper usage are incorrect. You should apply to the vernier caliper vertical and not horizontal to the object, as you need to measure the largest diameter which is often the outer case and not the bezel. Here are the digital vernier caliper measurements from my Rolex I just measured. - Daytona 116500LN = 39.9mm - GMT Master II 126720VTNR = 40.8mm - Skydweller 326934 = 42.2mm - Datejust 41 126334 = 40.6mm - Datejust 36 16014 = 35.8mm - Day-Date 36 18239 = 35.7mm - Oyster Perpetual 36 126000 = 35.5mm The largest difference between official and actual was GMT Master II, which is within 1.0mm. All the above models are within measurement error, and not a manufacturer's exaggeration.

Wow. I don’t think you’re measuring it wrong. For years I’ve thought my 116520 is small for a 40mm watch, just looking at it. Especially compared to my Sub and Batgirl, which feel so much more substantial on my wrist. And they are all supposedly 40mm! Thanks for pointing this out.

RIGHT?! I started overthinking this when I started wearing the pepsi for a couple of weeks. I kept thinking "I swear my Daytona didn't feel THIS big". But you know, there's so many factors that go into watch sizing, so I thought maybe it was the lugs or something. BUT I COULDN'T STOP THINKING ABOUT IT! So... I pulled out the callipers! And I just had to video my findings!
@beeapple4824
@beeapple4824 Год назад
Daytona seems smaller for 40mm is that outer case sides are curved, whereas Subs and GMTs are straight, and it is caused by optical illusion. Same shall apply to most classic models such as Datejust, Day-Date, Oyster Perpetual and some professional model such as Yacht-Master, which the outer case sides are curved.
@grammarboy1318
@grammarboy1318 Год назад
@@beeapple4824 There may well be one or more optical illusions. On my model (white dial) which is the last one before the current ceramic, the bezel is steel which I think blends into the steel case, contributing to the illusion of a smaller watch. However, Britt’s point is that the watch does not measure 40mm as advertised.

The most frustrating thing is that it's so hard to find them "in the metal" to "try before you buy" - not being accurate about the size sets people up for frustration. I've also heard that the Oyster Perpetual 41 actually measures in at 39.5. That makes it much more wearable - but it's so hard to find this info. Also - the Submariner 41 measures in at 40.5 compared to the old 11 series at 40.2.

So, I remember the video that you're thinking of. The new OP 41 is more like 40.6, but the old OP39 was also like 39.7mm. Numbers might be off, but I remember it being like a >1mm difference between the two. Now, while I maintain the OP39s were superior to the 41s, all that handwringing people did over Rolex making the watches too big was just silly. Hi Britt, what a good reflection and great video about the watch sizes. I have very recently been “blessed” with a new Daytona (LN) but good Lord what a big disappointment when I’ve had the watch on my wrist for a couple of days, feels totally smaller compared to my older model with stainless steel bezel, I’d definitely not classify it as a 40 mm watch (you’re totally right in your measurements). The major problem today is that you are not able to try out the watches before the purchase, you are just happy you’ve got the call. Anyhow I’m still glad, my wife is claiming it’s a perfect size for her 😂

Yep, not only that, the different metals for the Daytona are also differently sized. Some of the precious metal Daytonas are larger, and I’m assuming that’s the newer case design. I have a feeling a lot of chronographs are this way, because the speedmaster professional is known to have a 40mm bezel, with a 42 mm case (which extends past the bezel)

Wild that I just found this video Googling for "why is my Daytona not 40mm" because I just measured it today. Also, pretty crazy I have the exact same plastic caliper you have. If I try to measure 4 to 10 rather than the bezel at 3-9, which you really can't because of the pusher, so it's more like 4:20 to 10:20, I can get maybe 39.5 +/- but it's hard to be exact with this because I catch the beginning of the lug. I don't know - to me, I'd call it 38.3 because any other measuring seems arbitrary. Thanks for the vid.

This is actually very common practice among many industries. Just think about TV's or even down to basic dishes or trays. There are standardized sizes that already exist and the exact measurements for each product are not search optimized. So brands end up marketing to established industry standards. When you're a company as old and as successful as Rolex, literally owning 1/3 of global watch sales, every advantage comes into play. While other brands can afford to just have their watches researched and pined over every detail to sell to the right customer, Rolex are marketing especially successfully to non-enthusiasts, many of whom will just purchase based off of the most basic qualifications.

Great video Britt! And I think you are measuring it right, and it explains why the Date just 41mm of my friend looks smaller. I have a Tudor 41 and it measures 41.0mm and it looks bigger than the Date just 41. We checked and as mentioned in other comments the 41mm is actually a 39mm!!! Which explains why it wears so well. Funny story, my friend had to check the serial number as he thought they had sold him the wrong model!!!??? I am not sure why Rolex is doing that, probably a marketing stunt as "real men" wear big watches. From my own experience and journey as a watch collector, I have been able to wear 36mm watches as well as 47mm (I have a 7 1/4 in wrist)... It really depends on the style of the watch. And in fact I am more sensitive now to the thickness and weight of the watch than the case size. At the end of the day, I think it is a matter of personal preference. I also measured my DJ41 and it's 39.15mm at the (fluted) bezel and 39.65mm at the case (9:30 to 3:30). I think this is more widely known though since Rolex supposedly increased the size 2mm without actually increasing the size 2mm

Thank you Thank you - I was tripping out and always thought my Daytona seemed smallish compared to my other watches and I wrote it off as an illusion created by the tach scale and rehaut leaving a smallish face. Then I measured it! 38.3 on my cheap caliper. I still might be crazy, but not because of this. Oh wow - you have the EXACT same caliper. Too funny!

In my experience it's not always measured smaller. I believe the Datejust 41 (126300) is advertised as 41mm (hence the name), but in actuality is around 39mm. So you are not wrong about the inaccurate measurements lol. Probably because 41mm is a popular size.

My opinion is that it’s some kind of overall factoring in if the lug to lug, end link to end link, pushers at their outmost measurement etc etc - I think they slush that all together and it’s technically wears like a 40mm 🤷‍♂️ Also, are you aware that the case size is larger on white gold, platinum, and also rose gold cases - yellow gold (for oysterflex only?). Case size did these mentioned does measure to a truer 40mm And then the case is the same size (smaller and asymmetrical) on steel, two tone, and solid yellow gold (on bracelet)

You know you might be right. I think maybe it was a size that tries to give you the general feel of the watch ?! Idk! But it really doesn’t feel like 40mm either. 😂🙈 And you know! I didn’t measure any precious metal versions!!! And I so regret it! My husband has the yellow gold on oysterflex but it is in the safety deposit box 😭😭 I shouldn’t have been so lazy & should have got it!

No idea what the correct way is to measure it, but... 1. Rolex definitely fluffs their numbers. The OP41 famously measures only about 39mm, and the 34, like you saw, is actually only 32 and change. Even the new Submariner is more like 40.5. 2. I have smallish wrists, and I've always had a preference for smaller watches. The Daytona is one of the few mechanical chronographs that doesn't feel like a huge chunk on my wrist. I wish more chronographs were available at a similar case width and height. 3. I'll never own a Daytona, but if I did it would be yours... the black on black to me is the best one.

A lot of folks have long been saying that the Daytona is borderline unisex size. It is kind of shocking that they would have an advertised size which is so much of an oversell though. It's one thing to round figures up. If something is 39.65mm, well yeah okay, let's call it 40mm. But a whole 2mm is quite a lot in the context of watches!🤔

I have a simple philosophy on watch buying: Figure out what you can afford, then buy what you like in that price range. An addendum to this would be: Try it on first. If you like the fit, the advertised sized is irrelevant. I have bought watches online a few times, but by that time I had a good feel for what fits properly. Now, I am a big guy (6’-3”) and have a 19.5cm wrist. I can wear a 43mm watch easily and I have 2 in that size. But I also specifically purchased two watches at 39.8mm (it was advertised that way) and they fit fine. One watch I have is my dad’s 1940s Orfina Automatic in 32mm. I like this watch but it is just too small for me. Maybe I’m different, but number size to me is a guideline, not a rule. I tried on my Omega before I bought it. I wanted to be sure.

Wow, Britt out scooped her colleagues -- all the bigger RU-vidrs missed this fact entirely! In fact, if you measure the diameter of the sapphire crystal/dial, the measurements are SMALLER yet! When she asked why Rolex does this, it is eerily similar to food manufactures that put less product in the bag or can and charge the same amount. If you do the math, Rolex is charging the consumer for a 40 MM watch, yet using the material equivalent to a 38 MM times the hundreds of thousands of watches they make of each model!

Thanks for sharing this, I had no idea. I think the magnum theory is accurate. Does anyone know if the new 36 mm Explorer is true to it’s advertised size? I would think it is since people that want to wear a 36 mm size aren’t going to be insecure about the size of watch they wear.

There is that one video comparing the old vs new 36mm, and it measures both dials as 35.2mm. The width of the new lugs are smaller (and perhaps the new case is slightly thicker), which I think why the new one looks bigger. That same video somehow have convinced me to get the old one instead lol...
