Let's get real for a second, when was the last time that your project asked you to violently pan the camera from one side to another?
For me that would be a total of ZERO Times over a 16 year career at this point...so judge for yourself.

2 things I notice on youtube as an AMATEUR photographer, 1- people say shit they know nothing about, 2- people exaggerate things to get clicks, I think Canon could have done a little better and I hope they do next time but the EOS-R is nowhere as bad as it has been reported

Thanks for this video Carlos. Rolling shutter I usually just a problem when shooting action scene with fast camera movements and shoots like in a moving car through the side window and track shot from a car rig sideways and such with a lot of objects like buildings, trees, lamppost pole and such crossing the frame, and it is more visible if those objects reach all the way from the top to bottom, bit less if they don´t. But my workaround in the take is usually using higher frame rate to reduce visible rolling shutter as possible and playback in the project at that frame rate at normal speed.

Hi I appreciate the video but with all due respect I’ve had the canon for quite a while now and even gentle pans during a hand held scenario, nothing whiping about it and its very warbly. your video shows the cars moving across frame as apposed to you paning from left to right. please test thast scenario and show your findings. I ended up using just 1080p to negate this. all the best.

When I had the EOS R, my problem with rolling shutter only came when I was hand holding the camera. You can’t do any type of action shooting hand held like for a fight scene or anything like that where the camera moves quick back and forth, or how people do in music videos. For commercial where the camera is almost always going to be on a tripod, slider, dolly, or gimbal, you won’t notice it much. But I definitely had times where I wanted to go handheld and I couldn’t get the shot I wanted because of the rolling shutter

I was able to detect the presence of the effects of rolling shutter in most of the clips in this video, however they were miniscule, yet non zero. In all honesty, the subjects weren't moving across the frame too fast relative to the shutter speed, hence the RS effects weren't too pronounced. Though I agree that it's not to be obsessed about.

Thank you for your video. The camera has quite a rolling shutter compared to XT3 or Canon Cinema line (c300,c200,c100). I own a 5D4, EOS R and C300MKII. The main thing I miss from the EOS R is 50fps in 1080p with a crop mode. You can only do 50fps in full frame which means heavier glass. I tend to use this on the Ronin-S or as B Cam on a slider. The rolling shutter can be an issue when shooting hand held on a relatively long lens (say 24-70 with crop enabled). But all in all the rolling shutter problems can be very over stated. Generally I feel that on the webz people just like to take two numbers / feature sets and compare... and if you lose a category or two then you have shitty product :).

Thanks for sharing, that really shows once and for all i suppose, so far where I would see more rolling shutter scenarios I guess I think would be when shooting from within a car while it’s moving , but I haven’t really tried tht recently to really confirm it, it’s just based on my random memory, like I thought I did notice some rolling shutter especially if the subject whizzes by really close the window at high speed. Pls do correct me if I’m wrong 😊

Hi Carlos. First of all just want to mention I really appreciate your channel, and all your gear reviews and tests. I am a Canon user myself for about 15 years. I own a 5d Mk IV and a 5d Mk III, but just want to say that this is not how you test rolling shutter. Try filming a propeller (helicopter or plane with propellers). The rolling shutter effect appears at higher speeds, not at 35m/h ... I'm not saying EOS R is bad at rolling shutter, just your test should be better. If I freeze the frame captured with my iPhone at that speed, I don't think I'll get a rolling shutter... Best, Alex
@carlosq00
@carlosq00 5 лет назад
That is a great point, I don't have any experience shooting aerials and the only time that I have done work where there was a propeller in the shot I was using a Sony Handycam. I am now curious to see though how my higher end cameras might perform in the scenario. The point I was trying to make is that we should all stop panning from side to side to exaggerate the rolling shutter. Thank you for the comment, you've got me thinking about what I should bring on my upcoming trip to New Zealand

@CaptainJCRage

I'm looking for a video to show how the EOS R performs shooting 4k with regards to rolling shutter. I'm using a sony and the rolling shutter adds to the shakiness of the footage when vlogging with the camera. That means you actually move the camera while walking and filming yourself or what is in front of you and not shoot a moving scene while you hold the camera steady or while the camera is on a tripod. Even an Iphone nowadays can get the same result as what you have presented. Shoot a scene from inside a car looking out the window while the car is moving and see if the electric poles are still upright or houses are still upright while the car goes at 50 MPH. shoot a running scene tracking a subject while holding the camera without a gimbal and see if the footage is somewhat distorted, not the jitter from camera movement, because the sensor readout is just not enough for the dynamic movement of the camera. For a walking scene I sometimes shoot at 1080P because the rolling shutter is a lot less than shooting in 4k. Pan the camera on a steady movement to track a subject, Not whip but just pan normally. Sorry but this experiment is flawed. Not saying it doesn't hold any substance it just did not show what it's suppose to show. Cheers.

Rolling shuttle not only in video but photography too. And almost all cameras nowadays especially the mirrorless when shooting in electronic shuttle mode will have this issue. Is it critical? yes, when shoot wide open in daytime with high shuttle speed to get proper exposure and panning. Can it be avoided? yes, either use nd filter wide open or shoot with super steady hand with super slow panning. So, it happens on the cameras in that situation. It is not about eos r or sony or nikon canon etc

I love the aesthetics of the film emulation of Eterna on the XT3... unfortunate though it is a what you see is what you get baked in look. Carlos Quintero ahhhh, I agree. I like eterna as well. But it is not as flexible. And at this point I all about what can deliver the most pleasing result to a professional client. What’s your take on the Fuji xt3 4K lowlight performance and EOS R 1080p low light performance? Aside from corporate and commercial work I also do wedding films where I can’t control the lighting. @@carlosq00 yeah, this marks the amateurs view, pros know their tools so in the real world we were going to use cameras with global shutters when we want to run and pan around like crazy. In the 35mm Film times we were calculate the panning velocity VS shutter angel. So we're going not to have this stuttering shutter effect on screen.

I think this rolling shutter business is overly played out. The audience don't care about the technicalities nearly as much as the tech savvy gear heads.. I watched "Star Wars" received numerous academy awards when it came out and that film had chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the whole movie. The Blair Witch Project made so much money despite it never utilized a gimbal once. LOL

totally agree with you choosing the right tool for the job seems to be what it always comes down to.

Is everyone in this comment section blind? You can see the damn distortion on the train passing at all the close shots. And this is not even a good experiment. The real world problem with rolling shutter is when shooting handheld. Misleading video.

The guy on EOSHD.com can't stop whining about the RS. He goes out of his way to complain and rant about it. This clearly shows he's having a laugh.

It's not a "stupid test". I've seen professionally made movies that have shots skewed by rolling shutter. The camera tends to whip back-and-forth a lot during action scenes.

1:46 After saying that you do not show a tracking shot where the camera actually moves. Your examples are pretty bad with the camera plopped down in one place. Bad rolling shutter is a fact of this camera.

i keep waiting for someone to make a video about your point, but just haven't come across it. If you have one, will you please post it so that we can all see an example of what you are describing? Thanks!

Clickbait!! I thought there really was an issue with the camera but NO. C'mon man, you didn't even say why or how it ruined your project if it actually did. But you really can't complain about a camera's features, if you know it uses a rolling shutter then don't use it if you know how it works, if your project has certain things to consider then use the proper equipment for it

Carlos, could you have included some pans and gimbal moves though? Video is pointless.

I was hoping to inspire someone to go out and shoot their own version of this video...but that didn't work...LOL no one took the challenge the only thing that people are comfortable doing is bellyaching about rolling shutter...oh well.

Are you serious?? I am sorry man, but after a very sensible opening to the video this has got to be the dumbest test for refuting the effects of rolling shutter. The Rolling Shutter people are concerned with, vis-a-vis video recording on CMOS sensors, is the jello effect that appears when the Camera PANS. This effect can be reduced if the CMOS readout is fast. Some cameras have it fast, some have it slow thus resulting in more or less amount of rolling shutter. With you literally not moving (panning) the camera these tests become moot. You say you haven't been on a production that needed to violently pan or whip camera left to right but you have been on several ones where it called for tracking fast moving objects or where subjects came from camera left & exited camera right. You then proceed to show no less than 6 examples. SIX! And all those examples are of "subjects entering camera right & exiting camera left"! Huh? What happened to "tracking fast moving objects"? See, none of your 6 examples had that because that is where the rolling shutter would have reared its ugly head. Rolling shutter cannot be fixed in post. Some cameras (Sony, for example) have worse rolling shutter due to slow CMOS readout speeds. If you intend to shoot any action scenes rolling shutter will most definitely be a concern. If all you want to do is all static shots or slowww moving scenes then it wont be a problem but what it will be is a whole load of boring.
