Today, I will visit the last part of the Xemxija Heritage Trail, mostly Curt Ruts, the WW2 Pillbox and Roman Baths.
Discovered during maintenance and cleaning activities in May-June 2000, the site was identified as a Roman Period Bath complex. The baths with their pools, cold, tepid and hot rooms were cut into the rocks, in a steep cliff overlooking Mistra Valley. The cave was used as a burial site, possibly in Punic times ca. 500BC., prior to its conversion into a bath complex. Notice the three different style tombs all dug with great precision.
In the 17th Century a beautiful wall and arched doorway were constructed, turning the baths into a farmhouse and/or dwelling place. Two mangers and two hitching places are very well preserved. Two medium-sized pools would have served for cold dips. The stucco lining of the pool and part of the deep red coloured stuccos that covered the walls can still be traced.
On entering the doorway lies a large hall which probably served as a tepidarium. A narrow corridor separates the tepidarium from the caldarium, which is well preserved. Of rectangular shape, it possesses an apse with a rock-hewn niche possibly containing the statue of Hercules.
On the upper level a huge cistern was dug for the collection of the spring water, although at some point it could have been used as a silo. Baths of this size required a huge quantity of water which was provided by a couple of springs that up to a few years ago flowed down to Mistra valley from the top of the cliffs. It is not known whether the pools were roofed over but traces of rebates up the cliff face point to at least partial roofing.
Unfortunately the baths had to be abandoned due to subsidence and crevices in the rocks, which is a common feature in the north part of the island.
Hope you enjoy

Thank you Pierre for yet another fascinating piece. You show beautifully how the unique history of Malta can be revealed through her buildings. I love that the Baths went on to have other lives in various guises. Just pray they and the amazing cart tracks are preserved for future generations to marvel at.

What a beautiful video Pierre. Malta has so much History,everywhere you go there is something to see. If that was in England it would be fenced off and you would have to pay to look at it. We are on holiday in Malta at the moment,but now we are too old to venture. Although we have been coming for 23 years and have seen most of it. Heritage Malta are doing a wonderful job. Long may it last.

Thanks so much Pierre for sharing an amazing historical vlog to excite curiosity featuring very old structure remains of the Roman Baths, an ancient dwelling and a very well equipped old farm house. Although it's not in a very good condition one can easily observe how good was constructed with nice useful arrangements. The Kart Ruts are very well world re-nouned and one can stipulate his or her interesting theory adding to tens of other suppositions and believes. The audio is very good, keep it all that way, well done Pierre.👍👍

INTERESTING HISTORIC VLOG ⚔ 🛡. That "Xemxija Heritage Trail" is part of Malta's Roman period. Like you Pierre, I'm pleased SPB local council recognised the historical importance of that area.. However, I think more should be done including the "Salina Catacombs" . As I mentioned before, there's a group of volunteers who keep the Heritage Trail a bit tidy. THANKS PIERRE 🚶 🎥 👏 Cheers 👍 🇲🇹 ♥ 🇪🇺 ™

I like the Pill Box. Here in Lancashire, England the Pill Boxes were in the shape of a hexagon. If you look up York in England, Roman Baths were found underneath a pub when they were doing something to the cellar. Thank you for sharing. The arches are very nice. Are there any Roman mosaics in Malta?
@PierreFarrugia

Yes there is the Roman Villa in Rabat for sure, thanks
