Never played Total War (Civ fan since version 1.0), but this is kind of bittersweet for me to watch - it looks like an awesome game, but this is exactly the kinds of functionality I've always wished Civ could have. Always wanted to storm the enemy personally - not watching from the stratosphere. Anyone else remember Nobunaga's Ambition? Like a more primitive version of Total War.... loved it too.

In my SPQR campaign, the Macedonians and the Greeks (with their Roman family allies) did the exact opposite of what happened here: the Greeks attacked me, allied with the Roman families that I started a civil war with, and attacked the Macedonians. I counter-invaded, but it was a bloody one with the loss of Augustus Claudius, a man who did not live up to his title.

Jon! When constructing watchtowers along roadways, the ideal placement is adjacent to your roads rather than directly on them. This is because rebel factions like to occupy watchtowers, and if they do so to a tower *on* the road they will also block trade along that road. A road-adjacent tower draws them away from your trade arteries, minimizing economic damage until you can move troops to deal with them.
@darrellparfitt5908

I really like Rome Remastered, but watching this it's rather disappointing to see how much Cretan archers (and foot archers in general) have been nerfed. In the original Rome they were devestating - 20 downed in one volley - but in the remaster they barely cause much damage. You'd be lucky to get 5 in one volley.

Dogs are useful only because at the end of the battle all dead dogs regenerate immediately as long as their handler didn't die. This means that every single battle that war dogs are involve you want to send them in and let them all do as much damage as they can because as long as you keep the handlers safe you will get all the dogs back after the battle anyway.

I don't suggest the newer ones (Rome 2, Attila and Warhammer), they are a lot more expensive, so you should try the older ones first to see if you enjoy them, also many think they are actually better than the new ones

Hey mate. Do you know about switching retinue from leader to leader? If leaders are in the same city (not sure about in the same field army) You can drag a retinue member from one leader to another. It's a GREAT way to keep the retinue around, for example if your faction leader is like 68 you can start giving away his retinue so you don't lose all those great bonus's when he dies of old age. It's also a great way to build "super" administrators, or super generals. It's a bit cheap of course. Not sure if you knew about it and didn't approve, or just didn't know about it.

Remember when you talked about how awesome Segestica was? Well, this is why Brutii never follow this path: go past Salona, and you have to over-extend yourself in order to protect your settlements. Go after Greece strategically, or perhaps hop down to an unguarded Rhodes or Sparta, and you can more easily concentrate your forces, and then post-Greek unification you're at a much stronger economy. I find the Greek route to be faster than getting involved North past Salona

FYI for your next playthrough, ALWAYS USE WARDOGS! They only take casualties if their HUMAN HANDLERS get killed in combat. The Dogs are just fodder for the battle. You will see your Wardog unit numbers go down in combat as the dogs are slain but as long as no handlers die, you will be at 192 again right after the battle. Therefore, they are amazing for things like stopping the general's heavy cavalry charge in it's tracks, breaking critical units without engaging them, hunting down annoying ranged units without exposing your cavalry, and best of all, massacring fleeing units so the army routes after the battle.

You let Rebels gut Tarentums trade for how long? 2. Garrisons are worth building. Keeping high upkeep mercenaries as perma-garrisons, wtf? Use peasant garrisons to boost public order in safe locations. A small number of strong units on a plaza can hold off very huge armies as they are unbreakable. They can move between towns as-needed. 3. You have a massive treasury, and population issues. You should be buying every mercenary unit available. All can be useful. 4. Watchtowers in Southern Italy. Rebels often pop-up there and mess with land trade. 5. You keep saying, 'I need to be careful,' when what you mean is, 'I hope the AI doesn't exploit the holes in my strategy.' (i.e Greeks besiege Southern Italy where you had six turns to train/ship troops and hire mercenaries to force them out) 6. All spears have a bonus vs. cavalry (check the code,the listed bonus for 'long,' spears is just better) 7. War dogs are worthless unless you need to pin fast cavalry or kill weak skirmishers/artillery

If I recall correctly (been a number of years since I played Rome), isn't it possible if you have 2 or more generals/family members in the same settlement or fort, you can swap Retinue loadouts between them..... Simply hold down left click on a Retinue icon then drag and drop it on the avatar of another general within the same settlement. Although its not possible with some Retinue if I recall, but still very useful for tweaking faction members, if looking to boost generals/administrators effectiveness.

I'm surprised he didn't put several of the young family members into the force he sent after the Macedonians. Seems to me it'd be a good way to spread experience to a bunch of them.

Would Syracuse not be pronounced si-ra-cues, not sigh-ra-cues like Syria is pronounced si-ree-ah? This is slightly annoying me and I just want to know.

Cretan archers are completely broken. You might as well give your troops repeating rifles. Does make it a lot easier to play on very hard battle mode. You just cheat the cheater. Pretty mindless though. Reminds me of the English longbowmen in Civ 5 with the same range as field artillery who could just fire arrows into a city from the next province until every last garrison soldier was dead.

How to defend croton: Leave the place. If they attack give up because croton is absolute shit. If they just go away get the place back.

Suggestion--you know about history, right? So... next time you do a Rome: Total War series, or something similar, can you teach us what you know? It's so much nicer hearing it from somebody who likes history than reading it from a dry textbook.

Oddly enough, Wardogs actually carried my Greek - Macedon Invasion campaign and Aulus Brutus and Tiberius trains alot of them when you automanage the recruitment

You know what I think would make a good Total War game? Dragon Age, like the first big battle in the beginning with the Kings army and the Darkspawn just really reminded me of some of the Total War battles I've seen on here, I mean the King's Army had sloppier strategy than Jon but still.

Will there be another Rome Total War playthrough on your channel someday? Maybe something more crazy and difficult with a mod.

I know this is an old video, but with sea combat, if there is a ship unit that you just need to die, you can break your fleet up into multiple units and surround them on all 8 sides, preventing them from running away. Or, failing that, create a blockade connected to the land that prevents them from escaping. Just remember that even a slight gap (Even a diagonal between two ships) can allow them to get through. It's more of a late game tactic, for when you can afford the maintenance cost for enough biremes to literally start clogging up the sea, but it's totally worth it!

This series is the most horrifying piece of torture you have ever produced. I mean, honestly, 5 days , including a weekend, to wait for the next episode is an outrage! *turns off entitled youtube-viewer-mode* Good work and thank you for this series and triggering all the happy memories I had on this game.

Does anybody recommend buying and experiencing Rome Total War _before_ watching this series? Watching Jon do his thing is fun but it'd be a bummer if it also spoiled the game for me ^~^

I'm not sure if you know this, but you can move members of the retinue I believe. i can't remember if it was true in Rome or if it was medieval. I think that if you have two general's in the same place you can exchange the little face cards by pulling up the person you want and dragging the trait to the other character's portrait. I do believe this has to be done in the field.

I have a question for anybody. For some reasons, when battles start, i cant position my army, the timer starts running automatically. Anyone know why?
@Exantius9

Regarding archers and defence: I'm pretty sure the defence stat is irrelevant when counting damage done by archers, the only stat that matters is armor rating and shield if they're facing the archers, and the defence skill only affects melee combat, so optimally you'll want to shoot at lightly armored targets with high defence skill, like some of the northern barbarians

I think the reason Cornelius isn't picking up traits is that the battles are going too easy for him. In the battles in this video, he was never outnumbered of flanked by a reinforcing army. These fights were kind of like tossing javelins at fish in a barrel.
