Simon Woods, Polly Waler. Feuilleton HBO, réalisation John Maybury, scénariste Bruno Heller

A man who rose above all mortal ambition. That by the age of 31, was master of the Roman and overall Mediterranean world. It’s stunning to me that figures such as Augustus and Alexander the Great even existed. Even more amazing that we still talk about them over 2000 years later and hold them in such high regard.

It's the combination of a youthful man and a well seasoned leader/commander. Look at today most leaders are old. Basically no geniuses. From Biden to Putin and Xi Jinping. And all the leaders of Europe. It has been centuries that we haven't had such a leader. Closest would be queen Elizabeth in her younger years but she didn't do anything spectacular. Got to go back to Charles 12 of Sweden. Who was a genius. Nowadays such brilliant minds become CEOs and owners of companies rather than leading nations.

@d R Depends on how much work she wanted, or needed to do I suppose. Celluloid work can be a tough gig even if you are on the big money. Sometimes career paths can be influenced by factors as simple as family responsibilities or a dislike of continuous travelling. I have great admiration for Octavian. You're correct; Octavian was an enigma. A combination of kindness and cruelty. Only by demonstrating that he was prepared to use brutal force to maintain order could he have succeeded in introducing his dream of a Pax Romana. To the plebeian citizens under his rule it must have seemed like an unbelievable dream. Forty years of peach, stretching from Britain to Africa. Augustus is rightly remember and admired as the greatest of the Caesars.

I love how Octavian’s mother looks in this scene. She was never a believer in his abilities. She saw him as frail, weak, and hardly worthy of her family’s name. @@sephelutis I'm not disagreeing with you at all. POLLY WALKER's beautiful performance made THE TRAGEDY OF ATIA OF THE JULII the emotional centerpiece of ROME. After Servilla killed herself, Atia symbolically became the Patron Goddess of Rome on earth in a similar manner to Cleopatra as Queen of Egypt. In the memorable episode "No God Can Stop A Hungry Man", her emotional meltdown during her heartbreaking public humiliation at the entrance of Cleopatra's palace in Egypt was very painful to watch. Upon her return, Atia went to Octavian and angrily slapped him hard in the face for setting up his own mother. But she did tell her son to "crush Antony and his Egyptian queen". And yet, it is very clear later on that she regrets doing this because her lover will not only be defeated but also killed. Atia only wanted him to be humbled and humiliated. And she still loves Marc Antony as Rome itself may still love him. ATIA AND ROME HAVE BECOME ONE AND THE SAME.

For the definitive portrayal of Livia, check out Sian Phillips playing her in the old series ,"I Claudius." Far from being an accessory to Octavian's rise to the top , Livia may well have been the brains behind the whole imperial takeover. Rumored to have even disposed of Octavian Augustus himself when he later became less manageable. Sian Phillips as Livia has a classic sequence in "I Claudius" where (addressing Claudius) she says, "They won't let me into the Senate because I'm a woman, and they won't let you in because you're a fool; and yet what are they but a collection of fools and old women?"

In spite of all her goals in season one, she tosses it aside for a chance a true and pure happiness and finds that all her mistakes of the past destroy that. She never had a chance simply because she was so terrible, and that's why people have sorrow for her. She realized it too late.

Ideally Rome needed a political system which - similar to the British one, was capable of considerable reform (unlike the US system) but was not prone to being overthrown (like the French system); but for all Rome's legend, it's periods of stable and effective government were few and far between, and I don't think there ever was a time that didn't make decay and decline inevitable.

I think Atia finally realized that, despite standing between strong figures like Caesar, Anthony, Pompeii etc she wasn't a part of the game, not even as a pawn like Vorenus or Pullo. Her affair with Anthony made her felt like she has a hand in the entire charade, but turned out she was merely a sideshow, a distraction. She finally saw that all those years of whoring herself to Anthony and scheming against her enemies were meant nothing, and that broke her down good. Octavian, who she casted aside in favour of his enemy, came up the victor and that practically nailed the last...well, nail, on the coffin of her hope for further agenda. Now she had to accept the harsh truth that she can only join the ride and hope she'll die of old age.

@@kobrakitsch877 I hopeyou know that the Atia in real life had not a whole lot in common with the Atia from the series pictured above. "Atia was so fearful for her son's safety that she and Philippus urged him to renounce his rights as Caesar's heir. She died in August or September 43 BC. Octavian honored her memory with a public funeral." "A fictionalised Atia of the Julii is portrayed by Polly Walker in the BBC-HBO-RAI television series Rome. There she is portrayed as ambitious, shrewd, manipulative, sexually uninhibited, and morally bankrupt; the program also shows her as involved in a long-term romantic relationship with Marc Antony. Jonathan Stamp, the historical consultant for Rome, stated that in addition to the historical Atia, the character version of Atia draws significant influences from other Roman women from the same time period, such as the infamous Clodia, and Marc Antony’s wife, Fulvia." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atia_(mother_of_Augustus)

@@alexamann5729 is stating data that I and other fans of the series already know from reading other materials and sources. You don't need to hope any further. However, I did find it quite interesting that "Atia's intense fear over the safety of her son Octavian" was historically chronicled as you state and may have been possibly given logical motivation by the show's creators when during the first episode, the young boy is captured and tortured by the enemy on an ill advised journey arranged by his mother to visit his great uncle Julius Caesar.

Tyechia Harris Literally what isabella said. All Roman men wrote such idealized descriptions about the women in their lives whether it was really true or not. Having a wife, mother, or daughter that was a virtuous in the eyes or everyone she met, was the one of the aspirations Romans had. It makes them look good too basically.
@libiusperseus

I agree with the fact that Atia was probably idealized by Augustus’ propaganda. However, it doesn’t change the fact that the Atia of this show is a totally fake character, only very poorly based on the actual Atia. In fact, it seems the scenarists mixed Atia with Fulvia who was Antony’s second wife (and the mother of Octavian’s first wife). Fulvia was an extraordinary woman. She is known for her great involvement in politics and her many marriages with powerful roman politicians (Antony was her third husband). She even personally took the lead of legions during the Perusine War that opposed her to Octavian.

2:21 a womans face full of regret despair and a heart filled with remorse on the terrible things that happened when they are angry and out of control. In this movie atia of the julii is a reputable woman with strong character. She won’t stop at anything until she gets what she wants even to the point of corrupting the peoples mind just to manipulate the situation and she did that with excellence. But as the situation gets tougher and for the love of rome sacrifices must be done. Politics is the utmost priority of her son Octavian and what’s left of her is her lover where she bend to what Mark Anthony wishes to. Call it selfish but she’d only done that out of love. And that’s the tragedy. She felt that rome is already at her feet with octavians ascension in exchange for Mark’s downfall. 2000 years ago and this event still happens today. Cleopatra and Antony's tomb had been located recently, and should be dug out in the next few years. It's 30 km from Alexandria, in Egypt. So these would have been random corpses, hence the masks. Transporting corpses by boat over a few weeks would have brought about quite a stench, and be dangerous for diseases. Not to mention, the faces would have had time to rot and become unrecognisable. Seems a lot simpler to use corpses found in Rome and just put them in appropriate costumes and masks, since no one could tell the difference anyway.
