From the Johnny Carson show (1975). Prior to his presidential run, Reagan talked with Johnny about the state of government in America. libertypen.substack.com
Reagan has always been neoliberal propaganda that's served on a gold platter which is his hollywood actors charisma and delivery. People always mistakes eloquence as intelligence.
Fair points and a good amount of given knowledge. At least he is upfront and truthful as well as trying to educate people to look into what you’re asking for rather than just asking for an answer
There was so much that Reagan said in about 8 minutes that, if the Congress and all presidents followed, would get this country out of debt and put a stop to the constant misappropriation and overspending of our tax dollars on things that we don't need or want. Term limits and budget limits would go a long way in helping to get rid of the tax and spend politicians.
Interesting hearing Milton Friedman's main talking points throughout this interview. Makes sense, since he was Reagan's economic adviser the whole presidency.
From Brazil. It's sad knowing that here few people can understand english, fewer watch liberal ideas and therefore understand that we need politicians who spend less and cut taxes. It's the only one to improve our condition as an underdeveloped country.

If you don't know, we had double digit inflation and interest rates back then. President Reagan fixed that in his first term. I bought my first house in 1987. My interest rate was 8.5%. Rates went to nearly 20% at their peak before Mr. Reagan and Paul Volcker, chairman of the Federal Reserve reined in inflation.
For someone who wanted to balance the budget sure did a terrible job taking our deficit from $75 billion to $175 billion in 8 years, starting a host of useless programs, cutting programs that were good for people in poverty, and essentially creating the vast inequality within the economy right now and killing the middle class with neoliberal economics.
@@williammcdonald9832 Thank you! It's about time one of you intellectuals admitted it. But you're still hiding your conclusions: If you want the respect of constitutionalists like myself, people who believe that the goodness and ability of ordinary Americans is superior to the goodness and ability of government, then be specific when you say Reagan was wrong. Say he was wrong about taxes being too high in America. Say he was wrong about there being legitimate deductions when figuring your taxes. Say he was wrong that income tax calculations should be simplified. Say he was wrong believing that ordinary people can do better than government. Say he was wrong about bureaucrats having the power to make regulations with the force of law. Say he was wrong about wasteful government spending. Say he was wrong about desiring a balanced budget. And that's just the first few minutes of this Tonight Show chat. Give your reasoning - and specific details - why he's wrong about all these things that you say he's wrong about. Then, William McDonald, people will respect you whether you persuade them or not.
@@ROGER2095 1) In the most prosperous times in the United States and in countries with high wealth mobility have high taxes, specifically on wealthy people. The US is 37th in upward income mobility according to the United Nations among other economic studies. 2)Tax deductions are okay, businesses need them, but to pretend that this is not just corporate welfare is a farce. Not to mention government subsidies for billion dollar corporations, these subsidies were increased under Reagan. Why can't Joe Schmo deduct his milage to work, his cost of tools and supplies, etc.? Why is there such a special advantage for business. 3) I have mixed self owned income and work and I do my taxes in 20 minutes, it is extremely simple already. Sorry you are inept at simple paperwork, take a tax class at the library (a government entity that distributes FREE information to anyone), they are free. 4) Yes, grassroots leadership is awesome and people should govern themselves. Kind of like unions, which are grassroots organizations that work for the interest of the workers, which also has a direct correlation between wealth inequality and wage discrepancy, which Reagan, coupled with Nixon (who, btw, opened trade with China and crushed mom and pops), essentially destroyed. Then, hipocritically say that "trickle down economics" is not just giving more power to the wealthy and hoping they dole out to the poor at their whim a decent wage is tantamount to reinitializing the feudal lord and surf system. Also, for someone who believes "the people can govern better" he sure did not give a shit about Latin Americas democratically elected officials as he murdered them and any resistance that tried to defend democracy a la the School of the Americas. 5) Beaurocrats, aristocrats, corporate lobbies, insert powerful entity here, have always enacted laws. It is the reason we are not a direct democracy, it is too cumbersome for one, and Americans traditionally value expertise of elected officials to make decisions. It sucks in many ways, I believe their should be a proportional representation which would give more diverse perspective in the Federal government and create greater democracy. 6) Wasteful spending is annoying and the United States is certainly quite good at it. Under Reagan we had so much military spending waste, remember the space wars program or whatever it was called, billions and billions ( free money given to the cartels btw in Colombia among other less than desirable groups) on the war on drugs and incarceration, and the list goes on. 7) Why would we not want a balanced budget. Apparently he did not really care as our debt rose higher than any president prior, that is a fact. How can you say you want to balance the budget then simultaneously cut taxes on the wealthiest people, cut billions in social welfare (which is directly linked to wealth mobility in economically advantaged countries according to the OECD), and spend more money than ever and say he wants a balanced budget. Actions speak louder than words LOL. My dad loved RR and he was a liberal but he thought RR was a cowboy and an awesome warhawk type. I understand his importance in ending the Cold War, and even admit some of his economic policies were good for the country, especially at the time. However, overall he crushed a whole generation of middle, lower middle, and disadvantaged people with stagnant wages, destruction of high paying factory and industry jobs through outsourcing, crippling unions, cutting social welfare programs (Clinton is a punk for that too, even though he created a surplus), and overall subscribing to Chicago School neoliberal economics, supply side economics, what have you, that may create vast wealth but generally doe so for a nominal few while 3rd world workers are treated like slaves which is justified as "opportunity for the poor", but is really just a way for the richest people to make more and pay "low-skilled" workers minimally. And the common domestic worker suffers as their once high paid job is gone and the "service sector" of white collar drones are used as pawns, happy as long as they can get their mocha and drive the Tesla to the kids soccer game.
"cutting programs that were good for people in poverty" - there's literally no such thing. there's only programs that keep people trapped in poverty. i watched it growing up as a kid, being poor, and watched as people got addicted to a system that rewarded them for doing nothing. no one can ever convince me that government programs to help poor people are good, as i've seen what i have seen first hand.
Used to think that Reagan was grest. History shows Reagan started massive deficit spending. Then handed HW Bush a rececession. W Bush trickle downed our economy into the Great Recession. Then Trump cut taxes to drive a $7.3 trillion deficit AND the worst GDP since the Depression. Russia has the same cut taxes for the rich plan. Their GDP was $1.8 trillion. We tax the rich and have a $22 trillion GDP. Oligarchs don't pay taxes. They buy yachts. Now they are defenseless against Ukraine. Do the math. Either Republicans are STUPID or they want recessions. 3 recessions in a ROW! I loved Reagan as a kid. Now I understand that consumers buying stuff drives the economy. If companies produce products and nobody has money, tax breaks just delay the inevitable and rack up debt. Reagan was not as good as our founding fathers. Taxation with representation. They understood that a strong country needed taxes for military, services, and the like. Imagine no roads, military, police, schools, etc. We'd be 3rd world and taken over by a foreign power. Republicans want NO taxes and the greatest military in the world. Do we all buy our own tanks?
I always like listening to reagan speak during these pre-presidential years. Sounds very libertarian. Unfortunately eliminating deficits wasnt high on the prioriy list during his presidency.
Okay so here we have Ronald Reagan who signed the 1986 gun ban and supported the 1994 weapons ban talking about regulations as if he doesn't support them. Maybe he should have deregulated instead of made a bunch of regulations limiting our second amendment rights. You know the second amendment of the Constitution is supposed to be supreme law of the land
@@McVaio yeah it was a ban despite them calling it the firearms owners protection act. "Ban on new automatic firearms" Edit As debate for FOPA was in its final stages in the House before moving on to the Senate, Rep. William J. Hughes (D-N.J.) proposed several amendments including House Amendment 777 to H.R. 4332, which modified the act to ban the civilian ownership of new machine guns, specifically to amend 18 U.S.C. § 922 to add subsection (o): en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firearm_Owners_Protection_Act

Every single president up to his inauguration spent less collectively than he did on the government. It's always under conservative "fiscally responsible" that the government grows the fastest. Drug war destroyed lives and took away so many rights Without the war on drugs, prices would've been too low to make the cultivation of poppy in Afghanistan profitable for the mujahideen. The mujahideen the CIA created, trained and armed for decades. The same for the contras. War on terror did the same We are nothing more than pawns, living on a slave plantation, and completely bought the lie that we're free There's no time for us There's no place for us What is this thing that builds our dreams, yet slips away from us Who wants to live forever Who wants to live forever Oh ooo oh There's no chance for us It's all decided for us This world has only one sweet moment set aside for us
Everyone always says "get out there and vote" ...not everyone should vote. If you're uninformed and ignorant on American politics and can't answer basic US civics questions please don't vote.
Everything he said was right but his regime brought forth big government, inflation and taxes To be fair the inflation wasn't as bad though, 1 for 3 is not bad for a politician
We went from having Him and Thatcher as President and PM of the USA and the UK to Joe Biden and Rishi Sunak..... My god I wish people would take more of an interest in economics.
"In this world, some persons are professional plunderers who set fire to others’ houses or administer poison to them. Also, members of the royalty or government officials sometimes plunder mercantile men by forcing them to pay income tax and by other methods. After death such demons are put into the hell known as Sārameyādana. On that planet there are 720 dogs with teeth as strong as thunderbolts. Under the orders of the agents of Yamarāja, these dogs voraciously devour such sinful people. ¶"
lmfao!! $$$$ will typically always go to those who work hard. Work smart and sadly some make lots of money for bullshitting nad being corrupt!. In my experiences. Those who worked in an honest way. Worked hard. Typically are doing well! Now if they try to live beyond their means. This def will impact their financial stability in a negative way! So as the CEO of say, GM. What would you want to be paid? A friend that I work with complained about CEO salaries. So I said, if you had the number of employess as GM had. And you just took a 10% cut as he does today. He would make over a billion $$$ a year. Needless to say I shut his ass rather quickly!! Also ran the numbers and paid the CEO of GM $0.00. Assumed said CEO made $200 million a year and that was distributed equally to each employee. The average increase per hour was under $.40/hr. Yes under 40 cents per hr. SO saod CEO making $0 quits. Goes to another company paying for their skill set. GM brings in someone and pays them $500k/yr. GM goes under. Everyone loses their jobs and their well....40 cent per hr raise. Sounds like a well planned out plan???!!!
The main criticism of Reagan, however, is that his administration increased the national debt by 186 percent. Reagan's insistence on dramatically increasing the defense budget (by around 35 percent) and his inability to decrease domestic spending led to an explosion of the national debt.
Also, widening income gap, what they described as an atmosphere of greed, reduced economic mobility, and the national debt tripling in eight years which ultimately reversed the post-World War II trend of a shrinking national debt as percentage of GDP.
