Ronald Reagan Interview on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson - 01/03/1975 - Part 01 Part 02 - • Ronald Reagan Sits Dow... #johnnycarson #ronaldreagan #thetonightshow
Cannot imagine Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon or Jimmy Kimmel having this type of discussion with anyone in the Republican Party today without attacking them personally or constantly interjecting. Johnny Carson and Ronald Reagan were TWO class acts. We need more of the latter in public life across the Western World
Can you imagine ANY of today's late night talk show hosts conducting this kind of an intelligent, non-confrontational interview with any current politician or political leader? I can't. I watched this and my jaw just dropped.
It’s sadly a different world these days I guess it’s also due to the fact that we are too many people and we live in a Overstimulated world with too much problems and ideals but you’re right this Man was Intelligent till his last breath and he also acts like a true gentleman , they sure as hell don‘t make em like this anymore and also i miss those days when people actually thought like that mentally etc and of course Reagan’s Hair The Pomade at it’s finest 💈 100% True Class
Cats01: It's remarkable. I'm used to things being more contentious which is a sad commentary. I watched a documentary about the miscommunication between the engineering people and the construction people that resulted in the collapse of the walkway at the Hyatt Regency in Kansas City, Missouri. Despite the human error that caused that, the loss of loved ones, the lawsuits, the general seriousness and bitterness of the situation people were still polite to each other compared to people now in situations that are, in the scheme of things, not all that earth shattering. Somewhere between then and now we've lost something. Perhaps that people in the 1980s didn't have access to the internet like we do now. Political discussions happened face to face when people got together at diners, restaurants, clubs, etc. I don't think most people saying such inconsiderate things on the internet to others would do the same to someone's face. There was more give and take, I guess, especially if the people discussing politics grew up together or otherwise knew each other for a long time.
Well, if you want to see a cozy interview with a politician, watch any talk show host with a Democrat. To say there is a bias or imbalance is no shock to any honest person today.
Only Mr Carson was capable of conducting an interview like this without turning it into a circus. An eloquent , yet highly intelligent interview. Mr Carson was the best and today's talk show hosts (if you can call them that) are not even in the same universe as the TRUE King of Late night! Excellent video!!
Agreed. I won’t go so far as to compare Joe Rogan to Johnny Carson. But compared to other modern hosts, no one else comes close to being as classy as Johnny.
Johnny Carson, a national treasure. Just imagine his perception of today’s media and political discourse. Thank you for sharing this interview. A dramatic contrast to the tone and temperament of this present time.
Carson had 90 minutes to fill in 1976, so the show could get into a slow and introspective interview. Now, unless you are a big name or politician, you usually only get 7-8 minutes to make your plug.
If Johnny were still around, the vast majority of politicians in power right now wouldn't be. He could take down the bad seeds with a few quips, while being fair to differing points of view. And he made fun where and when he wanted, shilled for no one, and called it like he saw it. His like is not around now; but we would be well-served if his like came back . . . Even knowing that no one, no one, will ever be another Johnny.
Phil Donahue interviewed John Wayne at length in 1976, was a fan of his, discussed politics with which he disagreed, and was a gentleman about it. A better time.
I'm too young to have voted for him, but old enough to have appreciated him in high school. His common sense, positive attitude and belief in America was very inspiring.
The first time I voted was President Trump (2016). With Reagan I feel like there are some ideas that look good on paper but in practice don't work so well. Such as free trade and so that that expectation that a large amount of corporations have loyalty to the country that gave them prosperity. For example I think of Disney who makes their products in China and carries water for the Chinese government while subverting and undermining our country and the family values that made the country great. I prefer a economic system that emphasizes nationalism and incentivizes American working families to grow exponentially (much like Catholic moderate conservative countries of Hungary and Poland). Unfortunately the birth rate for natural born American citizens is that at all time low and we need to incentivize births. So I advocate performing the welfare system that would promote increasing the birth rate. I'm also for workers organizations that are not controlled by organize crime groups such as the Mafia or the Democratic party. And likewise I'm also for regulation and antitrust because as I say that if Wall Street(think of George Soros, Carl Schwab, or Sam Bankman), big corporations, NGOS, etc. are going to subvert American sovereignty, abuse working people, or undermine family values then they deserve to be punish.
Reagan was supposed to start World War III because he called Russia "the evil empire". Instead, he won the Cold War without firing a shot. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5UowNDaxRqU.html
of course right before saying that he says he supports various deductions like interest on mortgage etc....those kinds of deductions make it hard to have the tax form stick to one page.
@Schaden Freud you may be on to something. I do know i dont like people getting certain deductions when some dont qualify due to no fault of their own. IE im a lifelong renter. Prefer renting as opposed to owning a home. But theres no "rent deduction" on tax form like there is for mortgage. A flat tax to me does appear to be more fair than the current system we have.
For a moment, ignore what Ronald Reagan is saying. Look at him: perfectly attired, ramrod-straight, upright posture, neatly folds his arms either in his lap or, to make a point, around his chest, then relaxes occasionally. Absolutely ideal timing, never interrupting, but not letting any time go to waste, either. Carson looks like a mess next to him, slouched over, fidgeting around, looking down at the wrong times. Reagan was one of the few men who obviously outclassed Carson in terms of how to present a poised, capable figure - and that's no slam on Carson. Ronald Reagan just had 50 years of experience in how to present himself to the public by that point and was the master.
David Dumoi - He grew up and lived at a time when such things still mattered to most people; nowadays, one is considered an “elitist” if he speaks in enunciated English, regularly uses soap, and doesn’t come with scalp piercings and facial tattoos.
@@dorianphilotheates3769 you are referring to “elitist” in the traditional meaning of the word. The”elites” today are the leftist liberals that promotes no family values, no traditions, no good manners, burn cities, promote men in women sports, endorse sex transitioning in children, they are plagued with double standards, approve the murder of babies, etc. etc etc.
Seeing him is like seeing your Granddaddy! For me. Growing up in the 80’s. I remember Jimmy Carter as President but Ronnie was the President you would always have. Time goes so different in your teens.
Even if you disagree with Ronald Reagan's policies, he did carry himself with dignity and the self possession of a great leader. I miss those days of dignity
Can you eat with dignity? Can dignity feed you? Can dignity protect you from illegal aliens? Can dignity bring your outsourcing job back? The role of a politician, first, is to deliver his/her message, second, is to serve the people. If you want dignity, go somewhere else. You might find it in your the janitor that worked at your company.
i do disagree with many of Reagan's views and policies, but i have MUCH respect for the man. He always carried himself with dignity and the US was admired around the world when he was in office. Much different today with the clown show we have in the WH.
@uni blab Obama did not star in a soft porn movie, bragged about pussy grabbing, bragged about running into the locker room of minors, called his daughter a "hot piece of ass" on air and recommended to watch a porn movie with alicia macado. .....just saying. When you talk about dignity
@@TomSmith-dt4tj Obama was the reason the world stopped respecting the US temporarily. they 'liked' him because they could take advantage of him. at least with Trump they dont try to take advantage.
Can you believe that Ronnie had 63 and such an amazing politic career ahead? Put away left or right thoughts, just focus how well mannered, eloquent and elegant thus man was. Johnnie was at its best, being interested and delivering intelligent questions.
WHY can't we have shows like this agin instead of the sensationalistic pandering crap there is today, and with intelligent hosts that know how to shut up instead of awkwardly laughing cos they don't understand what the guest has just said. It's a cliche, BUT, I miss the old days.
Democrats are not openly embracing Communism, and the DNC chose Biden because they didnt want to deal with the "Socialist" label. The tone and interviewing here is what you would typically hear on NPR or BBC today.
@@RichV20 Sure, since now they are preferring Cuomo over Biden. Both are a joke and Biden is already behaving like poor Reagan did during his last couple years in office.
maybe turn off fox news for a bit and dig a little deeper. quality journalism will ALWAYS be brought to the table, it might just sometimes offend you because you don't agree with what's being said.
@@jfjc5694 Donald J Trump does not represent what the Republican Party stands for in the slightest. Ronald Reagan’s son even said his father would have hated Trump
@@itsdarienn Because Reagan's son is a democrat, hence his hatred towards Trump and the Republicans. I'm sure Ronnie would have respected (at least) DJT.
I cannot express the love I have for this man. I’m only 22 years of age and had no inclination as to the type of man Reagan was until that past few years as politics has become so drastically polarized, but god the things I would do to be able to go back and listen to him speak in person... I bet he had one of the firmest fuccin handshakes:’-))
Yes, Reagan was our last great president. Unfortunately, the party has been hijacked by the Bushies (who hated him and vice versa) and other people we won't mention. Reagan was respected by both sides of the aisle.
@@chegasprez5162 Respected is the right word. They hated him because was Teflon and difficult to smear even when he deserved it. Man they were savage toward that guy. Not the level of savagery aimed at Trump, but quite remarkable for the time. Plus it all went to hell after the Bork nomination failed. That was when the sniping and lack of cooperation began and the collusion between the two parties went underground so desks could still be made. But bad blood in public thereafter. Which we should regret now that we see the results.
He did. But not f'in, that's a crude description he would not have liked. A confident handshake, yes. I am happy to say I know this from personal experience.
It's just MK-Ultra bullshit kid, it's that way with every president. Never look up to politicians and NEVER hold them in high regard. Look up MK Ultra for starters.
Once we figure out time travel I'm going back to Jan 1, 1974 when I'm 5 years old so I can relive the 80s and pre-80s all over again. Times like this are the best.
They both had the same knack for reading the room -- which undoubtedly was a byproduct of their careers in show business. But that alone wouldn't fool the average American; they also had to be _sincere._ And both were. The character of these two gentlemen was beyond reproach; their Midwest sensibilities survived the jaded worlds of Hollywood, the press, and the polity. We don't make them like this anymore -- because succeeding generations after WWII have lacked the moral clarity and patriotism possessed by the generation that fought that war and saw to it that we'd never have to fight one again, and that their kids would have a better life than theirs was during the Depression. Successive generations are so far removed from that now, and so woefully uneducated about it, that those values that made us the wealthiest, freest, most powerful nation in history are all but extinct. I don't know where it's going to come from, but if we don't find those values again -- Faith, Family, Work, Neighborhood, Peace, and Freedom -- we will find ourselves in a steady decline due to a rot from within. It's up to We The People; government governs by our consent, and we need to live up to that awesome responsibility.
History books overlook the alliance between Reagan and Pope John Paul II (a Pole). They worked together to fight communism. The USA's global policy may have gone awry, but we support our allies. And Poland is an ally we will fight for.💖
Definitely was luckier than most men! And I like how he kept it brown, no matter how old he became. But all this aside, Reagan was such an intelligent, pleasant, delightful man, and knew how to treat people. That’s why he had such a good presidency.
I tried reading through all the comments and liking and commenting; but there are so VERY many. Suffice it to say: Ronnie and Johnnie were the best at what they did! I miss those days!
Even Back Then In 1975, Most Of The Americans Were Ready To Watch Him Be One Of The Best President's In The United States Of America, And In Time He Was, And Most Americans Would Agree With My Comment !!
Actions speak louder than words. Obama was a smooth talker. Each action in Accordance to its time must be judged as fairly as one can, or we become hypocrites.
Crazy to see a consrervitive treated with respect even if Johnny didn’t agree personally. Kimmel would have been taking pot shots the whole time and probably would have cried at least once.
Rich Viola true. Quite a few Hollywood people in those days supported Reagan. Wasn’t taboo to be center right yet. Johnny was fair with everyone though. Good tv then.
Dr. Emmett Brown : Then tell me, future boy, who's President of the United States in 1985? Marty McFly : Ronald Reagan. Dr. Emmett Brown : Ronald Reagan? The actor? Dr. Emmett Brown : Then who's vice president? Jerry Lewis? Dr. Emmett Brown : I suppose Jane Wyman is the First Lady! Marty McFly : Whoa. Wait, Doc! Dr. Emmett Brown : And Jack Benny is secretary of the treasury.
“Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.”... Ronald Reagan
Reagans view of the working class: if it unionizes crush it with force, if it complains, take away its health care, if it dies, import cheap labor from Mexico.
It's usually the people in middle america, in the fly by Rush Limbaugh zones, with the bombed out looking downtowns that dis California because of it's success. They just hate the success Democrats are having! In the mean time were contributing by far more federal tax dollars than any other state. Think about that before you even think about responding!
Ronald Reagan, AND Johnny Carson--the only two men in America, who look great in a brown suit! Loved how non-judgemental Johnny was, as opposed to now the idiocy, the Leftism, and all for laughs. I like this conversation, and Johnny asks incisive questions, and Gov. Reagan answered very well. KUDOS for posting this. A highlight in Talk Show history.
The days of classy interviewers are long gone. Carson was class and so was Reagan. Fallon, Maher and colbert couldn’t hold a candle to Carson. Our society has deteriorated to such a disgusting level. Can you imagine Carson touching himself, calling the president nasty names or any of the horrible things hosts do today? We were such better ppl back then...most of it thanks to our “entertainers” in Hollywood.
I lived in Charlotte, NC, at the time of Reagan's. Couldn't speak any English and learned a lot by listening to his speeches. It was a good time and people seem to like him - to be reelected.
Johnny used the word " Antipathy " towards government on his own show on live T.V. And Reagan Chuck Norris'd that sh*t right then and there. Good ol' days...
Never was there a better President. Nor a better interviewer. I voted for this man my first time I was eligible to vote and I have been disappointed ever since. That being said: #TRUMP2020
@@brianjacob8728 More respectable & competent than Dump will ever be. Reagan wouldn't have handled COVID-19 like an asshole & blame previous administrations for his failures.
@@brianjacob8728 Reagan was the greatest President in Modern history. He ended the cold war, brought the iron curtain down, and brought about the longest run of economic prosperity in our nation's history.
@@UnknownUzer He did none of those things. The only thing he did was the Grace commission, which found that ALL of our income tax goes to pay interest on the debt (which he TRIPLED during his time in office over that stupid stars wars scam), but then refused to release this finding to the public, even tho we paid for it.
This is when late night tv had class and Johnny was the best and god bless them both Ron Reagan and Johnny Carson!! he didnt make fun of him and he treated him with respect..UNLIKE THE MORONS ON LATE NIGHT TODAY 2020 THAT JUST INSULT AND HATE!!

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, “You must understand. The leading 'Socialists' who took over Russia were not Russians. They hated Russians. They hated Christians. Driven by ethnic hatred they tortured and slaughtered millions of Russians without a shred of human remorse. The October Revolution was not what you call in America the “Russian Revolution.” It was an invasion and conquest over the Russian people. More of my countrymen suffered horrific crimes at their bloodstained hands more than any people or nation ever suffered in the entirety of human history. It cannot be understated. "Socialism' was the greatest human slaughter of all time. The fact that most of the world is ignorant of this reality is proof that the global media itself is in the hands of the perpetrators.” “It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his entire world view depends upon his not understanding it.”
That's because Democrats destroy everything and Republicans come in and fix it. The problem with California, the Democrats fucked it up beyond repair...
Yes of course! They get more power by the decade because of lack of term limits. Which enables them to make simple issues such as tax and spend more complicated than needs to be so people become apathetic!
Deport illegals. Build prisons and get the homeless off the street. Most homeless are drug addicts and alcoholics. Their mental issues are often brought on by drugs and alcohol. Burnouts. I found this fascinating because Reagan is the first president I voted for, but this was after his governor ship and before running for president and unfortunately, the younger generation does not understand us, but Carson said we will be right back and then that was the end of the video😢. Much respect for the Reagan’s and for you, Johnny Carson I am sure you had more conversations in heaven. Two wonderful men. And Reagan I have all your jokes when you were older and president in the letter that you wrote when you got that used to have the what are you wrote when you had learned of your Alzheimer’s and the way the press treated Nancy will when you went to be with the Lord.
Johnny and Ronald looking fine on the show but I’m sure very emotional. Just think, the king of comedy Mr. Jack Benny past away December 28, 1974, just six days before this show aired.
Johnny wasn't like today's late night hosts, he told jokes that were on both sides of the isle, he had Republicans and Democrats on as guests and he never let on what his own politics were... In 30 years, you didn't know if Carson was a Republican or a Democrat, and frankly if the late night host would take a page out of his book they would get the ratings he got!
That's because Carson still wanted a paycheck sitting at a desk chatting it up for millions of dollars a year. He is slave, just like the rest of us, just with more money for catering to the élite.
Here are two heartland Americans who maintained their love for their roots. Today's elites, whether in entertainment, media, tech, or politics, make it a point to sneer at and despise anyone outside their bubble.
It's been that way for the past 13 years, and has been put on steroids by social media. And Hollywood and DC being what they are, they're simply pandering to an audience who is happiest when they're pissed. It's been a fun 13 years for the respective bases of the two major parties, especially when they're getting all the press. A man like Reagan couldn't get elected today. Trump would call him soft and a loser -- even though he benefited most from Reagan's predilection for de-regulation of commerce; The Squad would simply brand Reagan as a fascist, because that's what they call _anyone_ to the right of far left. And unfortunately it's those party bases who are hogging the megaphone in the 2020s. The press will tell you "Hey, we're just giving people what they want." Yeah. So do pimps and drug dealers. Is _that_ how far we've fallen since Reagan left office?
One of the highlights of my life was seeing him land in Marine One at my high school in 1985 and get into his Limo and take off for our Towns Courthouse to give a speech on taxes
Thinking back on it makes me feel young again though. Oh my, were the 1980s a great time to live in America under Ronald Reagan. We'll never know the likes of that kind of principled leadership or stellar character ever again I'm afraid. Reagan was the last President who cheerfully worked with the "other side" to get legislation passed. He and Tip O'Neil were staunch political adversaries, but because of Reagan's willingness to work with him to move legislation there was hardly anything he fought for that he didn't get, and left Democrats with minor victories that _they_ could campaign on. He wasn't afraid of working across the aisle, because he knew he had the vast majority of American voters on his side. O'Neil and the Democrats knew it, and so while they didn't utterly sell out their constituency they were willing to work with Reagan because he was decent and treated them with mutual respect. We've had none of that for the past 13 years, because the radical extremists in both parties are controlling the agenda; anyone willing to work with the "enemy" is burned as a heretic. The GOP is the worst example; they've resorted to eating their own rather than work with "the other side." How far we've fallen in only two generations.
