Indeed, though this film had particularly brilliantly executed and shot driving scenes. In contrast to this, more recently I watched the latest vastly budgeted James Bond movie and there's a big car chase in that where the streets of London are entirely empty except for Bond and the enemy he's chasing (who you don't know at all and don't care about), and it's filmed like a car advert, drenched in post processing colour filter for cheap tacked-on "atmosphere", as everything is now, and it goes nowhere - absolute garbage just for the sake of having a car chase.
@@AD-kv9kj I remember that - it stood out because neither of the cars seemed to get any damage. The chase looked like a car advert. As if Aston Martin and Ferrari had told the producers to feature the cars but not show them crashing into anything. It felt weak. With Ronin they used second-hand cars and trashed them.
This chase is powerful because it doesn't any of the gimmicky crap you see today. No dressing up. Just the sound of the engines, the crashing, no dialogue. It's just pure film making like you don't see often. It must have been a logistical nightmare to film and close all these Paris streets. Bravo and rest in peace John Frankenheimer.
There is a video on here that tells of how the freeway scene was shot on a Sunday. Closed for 6 hours with no restrictions on what they could do. A few other things were explained in the video too by the lead stuntman at the time. Worth a look.
This is how they make a proper car chase. The BMW is an accessible, legitimate sports saloon, and the 406 is a daily driver with a hefty V6. There aren't jumps and huge explosions and loony drifts, the RWD beemer keeps it's tail tucked in and demonstrates excellent handling, while the 406 uses handbrake turns and lift-power-oversteer to compensate for having FWD and a nose-heavy weight imbalance. Overall, this is how the chase would actually go down in real life, not like Fast and Furious
One of the best car chases ever. Impressive precision driving, beautiful 4-wheel drifts, no silly sideways cars losing all their speed on corners. FAST.
Love the chases in this movie! Love the BMW sound, the Audi sound and the old merc´s sound in this movie. Even the Citröen´s engine sound is delightfull!
@DC322 thanks mate, wasn't too sure what type of Peugeot car it was so cheers for the clarification...loved this car chase scene, probably the best one ever choreographed for a movie :)
>.> "Penultimate" means the one immediately after the ultimate thing. So you're calling this chase scene the second best example, and then calling it the greatest ever.
fucking hell Iiked the 406 but I used to have an mi16 and why has one of those cars never been in a film.the best car I've ever owned and I've had some cars.
@@AlejandroBelloRD I read in an interview that it was supposed to be an M5 but the M5s were too expensive to damage, so in the dangerous scenes they took several 535s, and in the "safe" scenes they took an M5.
@@docboy989 yeah why wreck an M5 when you can take a lower 5 series and disguise it as an M5. Regular E34's there are lots of them in the second hand market, junkjards etc. but M5's are much more rare. So just pick a random E34 and put the M5 badges and wheels in it.
The film was set in France. Cars in this country have the steering wheel on the same side as cars in the US. Great Britain is the main exception in the whole of Europe.
The BMW used was a UK model with the steering wheel on the right hand side of the car and is being driven by a stunt driver. Robert De Niro is sitting on the left and is steering a dummy steering wheel which is why there is a look of sheer panic on his face during the chase scene.
Great movie and I love this part, but does anyone notice how the Peugeot starts with a 4 cylinder sound and towards the end has a V6 sound at 5:51, and before anyone says it, no I'm not confusing it with the M5 engine sound! :P tiny fault though compared to a great piece of film!
Mostly a 535i. Some shots show a real M5. Sounds are from a real E34 M5. I rode in one at the Nurburgring a few weeks ago. Check out Internet Movie Car Database for more details - search BMW M5 and Ronin.
Well, I'm Dutch, here it's very annoying when someine doesn't use their turn signals. I saw an ambulance driving with siren switched on once, and it used it's turn signals
3 years ago, once after a drunken night out, i came back home and i literally went on ebay bidded on an e34 535i and now I drive one :-) best drunken mistake i ever made....
